Mutual Support Group (coffee club) Northeast

It would seem that at least 3 of us are Northeast (England) based, is there any more?

I tend to hangout on another UK based prepper related forum where we have MSG set up, the idea being we can help each other if and when there is a problem (ok we occasionally meet up for a coffee, natter and to swap ideas, well mainly coffee to be honest).

This has got me thinking about running this Topic along the same lines. A dedicated place to share local finds or post warnings relevant to the Northeast.

Thoughts on this?

I am a big fan of both coffee and mutual support 👍

RainbowZebraWarrior · 06/03/2022 19:59

I'm up for a North East support group and sharing of info. Under a different user name, I started a few of the original Pandemic Preppers threads. There were quite a few NE folk at the time, but a lot have fallen away.

Weather is a big one for me. I have Ehlers-Danlos syndrome so have mobility issues. It's forecast to go down to minus 5 here just off the NE coast, so worry about it being a bit skitey in the morning. Just been out into the back garden. The stars are beautiful, and Jupiter is sparkling away as usual (I'm a big sky geek, and you can usually find me on the Flight Radar threads too)

I'm also big on foraging and know all the places to go for cob nuts, wild damsons and all manner of other edibles. My Dad has been my inspiration in that sense. I used to get hauled out of bed at 5am on a Sunday morning to go mushroom picking. We have chickens, an allotment and a fishing boat. We also shoot, and I was proficient in skinning rabbits by the age of 10. We shoot a lot of what we eat, meat wise. We are beekeepers too, so we are possibly more traditionally self sufficient than your average prepper by modern day standards.

K9medic · 06/03/2022 23:20

Just off the Northeast coasts, seriously ??? Now your really scaring me

Just been out with my 2 "ferocious war hounds" and is very crisp and white.

I'm more into prolonged medical field care, but remember growing up on a hill farm where if you wanted something you made it yourself. Realistically I think we have more risk of poverty than zombies (though working in the Toons vibrant night-time economy I have seen a few of them).

South tyneside here.

I'm a natural pessimist and a control freak so prepping is right up my street. Paid off quite well when we got stuck for 8 days with no power after Arwen. Would love to join in NE group. Smile

RainbowZebraWarrior · 07/03/2022 15:11

Yoo-hoo @Bobbobbobbing

My monologue should have said just on the NE coast not off it. I don't have my own island or anything!

FoolShapeHeart · 07/03/2022 16:37

Hi @Bobbobbobbing you sound a lot like me! Though I wouldn't say I'm a pessimist, rather that given the enormous implications it's worth being aware of the various possible scenarios & putting some mitigations in place - eg I'm not anticipating a nuclear holocaust but given the cost of potassium iodide, it makes sense to have some on hand for MiniFool. For sure it helps to feel a bit more in control when it's clear we don't have a steady hand at the rudder.

@RainbowZebraWarrior that's a shame, a prepping ally with their own local island would be aces 👍 😂

K9medic · 07/03/2022 17:37

@RainbowZebraWarrior too late we now all KNOW you own Coquet Island as your private retreat Grin

One of the advantages of my age is Potassium Iodine is of little use. But I have spent a bit of my free time today re-reading some of the Nuclear survival books from the 80s

FoolShapeHeart · 07/03/2022 17:44

@K9medic yes, I didn't worry about supplies for myself either. I saw something governmental recently advising us (Brits) that we don't need our own supply (I was looking for related govt content, it wasn't a random advent) but that just made me wonder if I had enough; there's such a lack of trust in the (current, especially) govt that my first impulse is to consider the opposite of what they're advising.
I have a small selection of useful books & have been thinking over the weekend that it wouldn't hurt to give them a re-read.

RainbowZebraWarrior · 07/03/2022 18:29

Ah Drat! I've been foiled by you pesky kids. I shall prepare immediately for your inclusion within my little sanctuary.

I've also been reading the old guides. I think I've bored my parents to tears with it now. Although I've got Dad on board as he's a proper survival enthusiast.

BarrowInFurnessRailwayStation · 07/03/2022 20:33

I'm in the NE too. Me and dh are interested in prepping and we have equipment, medicines and food. Fil was involved in civil defence in the 70s and 80s and dh was brought up with a prep approach to life.

K9medic · 07/03/2022 20:52

So that makes 5 of us so far

👋 to @BarrowInFurnessRailwayStation

Bobbobbobbing · 07/03/2022 21:23

I got asked at work if I'd help with thinking about what would be needed for a business continuity plan for disruption to the power supply. I don't think the person I'm helping quite expected the level of detail they got from me Grin

Would love any book recommendations.

BarrowInFurnessRailwayStation · 07/03/2022 21:24

@RainbowZebraWarrior 😃👋

ToastieSnowy · 07/03/2022 21:41

Hi I’m NE too. Been a prepper since DCs were young when I realised that once they were in bed if I didn’t have any milk in for a cuppa... tough.

They’re teens now but I’m still prepping. Considering getting a kelly kettle but it’s a lot of money

FoolShapeHeart · 07/03/2022 22:01

@ToastieSnowy I'm also tempted by a kelly kettle but yes £££. Same for a water BOB.

@Bobbobbobbing I've started with the old classic Life After Doomsday, I remember it being very US-based but practical & comprehensive. It's 40+ years old now though, so for sure there'll be updated alternatives. Next on my list is When Technology Fails. Because who doesn't love a little light reading before bed.

Lovethatforyou · 07/03/2022 22:08

Hi, can I join? We’re on the NE Coast…

My prepping has been lax of late, but since R invaded U I’ve been wanting to build some more stocks up and do some reading :)

K9medic · 07/03/2022 22:11

If you are looking for a book on Nuclear detonation I have been reading this one today

www.survival.ark.net.au/Nuclear-War-Survival-Skills.pdf

I have a couple more "real books" on my bookshelves I will post the title and author tomorrow if it helps.

Thanks @K9medic, downloaded to read later (not too much later)

Workinghardeveryday · 08/03/2022 00:01

Watching 😊

LittleMissPreppy · 08/03/2022 09:02

Wish I lived in the NE: will have to make do with watching the thread instead (:

RainbowZebraWarrior · 08/03/2022 13:34

Ah crap. Just had this through the door. Local outbreak of Avian flu. Have to register our chickens.

Northeast Mutual Support Group
Bobbobbobbing · 08/03/2022 14:42

Oh no! Avian flu wiped out our local family of swans- only the male survived.Sad

BarrowInFurnessRailwayStation · 08/03/2022 15:40

Loads of people in our village have chickens, ducks and geese. They're never under cover. It must be a real worry.

K9medic · 08/03/2022 17:22

@ LittleMissPreppy you are now an "Honorary" Northeastenar Grin you could of course start a MSG in your own area as well.

Who was it who jinxed us by saying 2022 has to be better than 2021?
