What are you doing to prep for this storm then?

I'm not fussed about it tbh, reckon we'll be fine and it's just the media overreacting. I live with my mum though who's in a right flap and running around filling all the bowls we can find (expecting a power cut). Apart from charging devices and having candles and matches handy what else is there to do? You guys making plans at all?

I think peak winds are likely to be during daylight hours. So I am turning up the night storage heater so it charges up a bit more, should I need background heat as will be at home more during the day.
Charging a power bank, also a lantern incase power issues later in the day.

Have been shopping and got some food that does not need heating or refrigeration.
Fruit, nuts, tinned tuna, cake, peppers. Nothing that exciting.

Bigoldhag · 17/02/2022 20:31

I take my info from weather sites, so I don’t think its over blown. I am in the red area and very close to the coast (few hundred metres!).

I’ve charged my power bank, and my phones/laptop. I have to work, but they won’t be stressy if I have a power cut. If it does go, hopefully I will be able to tether to my mobile for a couple of hours.

Got the candles, matches and torches just in case :D i know its daylight but its still dark when i get up here so will be needed if power does go early.

Other than that, I’ve done nothing extra. I am always prepared with water/food anyway because thats prepping for you. The only thing I have done is made sure my to go bag is ready. Which is dramatic, but I do have some concerns about my kitchen roof surviving, so if i have to leave then I am ready. Its nothing beyond my handbag with a few bits, but i’m just glad its ready with shoes and coat in case. Plus dog lead etc at the ready.

If anyone has anything they think I have forgotten, let me know!

Stay safe all!

BiscuitLover3678 · 17/02/2022 20:36

Taken down and put away things in the garden that might fly about. Ensured everything is locked up and secure. This might be helpful for some of you.

Bigoldhag · 17/02/2022 20:38

Ah good reminder thank you’ just remembered i meed to being in my garden chairs!

TheNoonBell · 17/02/2022 20:38

Charged kindle, stacked the plastic garden chairs in a sheltered spot then put a few candles and lighters around the house.

Other than that we are generally prepped, log burner, water, food, rocket stove and lots of wine. If we have outages I intend to enjoy them in comfort ;)

Spacerader · 17/02/2022 20:42

I'm in the red zone, and my prep consisted on buying some chocolate to snack on whule I watch Netflix because my work is closed because of the red warnings tomorrow. And I put my patio chairs in the shed.

Now I'm wondering if I should charge some power banks up Hmm (I probably won't)

Unreasonabubble · 17/02/2022 20:47

@Spacerader - if you unfortunately end up with a power cut, how are you going to watch Netflix?

I would definitely charge your phone, iPad, kindle and power bank if you have them.

And if you have some favourites on Netflix you may want to watch, download them now just in case.

Teaand · 17/02/2022 21:04

I am charging my power pack, Parked my car further away from some trees than it normally is, put some garden items and bins away and bought some logs in. Oh and bought some chocolate. The rest I don't need to think very much about as I have supplies in ready as normal. I am near the coast exposed and in the red zone. School has closed and I have cancled an appointment. I am crossing everything that we keep power and there is little damage as I have plans fir the weekend I have been looking forward to for a while.

blanketyblanked · 17/02/2022 21:37

Will move the bins tomorrow, if I remember. And then anxiously work from home while hoping the greenhouse and shed and fences and trees don't smash / fall on the house.

TheFormidableMrsC · 17/02/2022 22:03

I've put stuff on the trampoline and laid the bins down. Where I live we are quite buffered because of the layout of the houses but it is fairly rural and we are surrounded by woodland. I am however very worried about my garden fence which is literally falling apart and I can't currently afford to replace. I'm hoping it will survive. I was a teen during the surprise hurricane in the 80's that Michael Fish said wouldn't happen, it was horrendous and we were trapped in our house for a fortnight after. So I am nervous but hopeful it's just a warning to be prepared but will not be as bad 🤞

SuperSocks · 17/02/2022 22:07

I've forgotten to move the bins but the wind has already picked up and it's dark and cold out there! Don't know if I can be bothered to go shift them. I have put my car in the carport though. We haven't a lot of food in the house but it's too late to do much about that now! I'm coastal Cornwall so pretty used to crazy winds, but my mum's insisting it's going to be an Armageddon type situation. Watch this space!

Woah, a fortnight?! That's crazy!! Because of continuing high winds? What did you do for food?

OP posts:
FourChimneys · 17/02/2022 22:11

Torches checked, devices charged. Elderly neighbours checked and will do so again tomorrow at least twice. My work moved to online but if there is no power it can wait, I run my own business. Plenty of food in anyway and DH would be delighted to have a good reason to make a brew on the camping stove.

We are near but not quite in the red zone.

I was a teen in Kent too during the 1987 hurricane - had no electricity for 10 days!

I was fortunate that my parents were well off and we had a well stocked kitchen. It was tree fall that was the issue. It's always stuck with me so I always have enough that we can survive for a couple of weeks.
TheFormidableMrsC · 17/02/2022 22:25

@Francofilly I'm pretty sure many have forgotten that. I lived on the North London/Herts border then bit our house was on the edge of woods . It was also a very old house with lead light windows. I'll never forget it. It was absolutely terrifying and the damage was horrific. My view has always been have a couple of weeks of supplies. This also worked really well at the beginning of the pandemic when I was diagnosed with cancer and couldn't go anywhere. Be prepared I say! We don't know what is around the corner!

ChurchlightJane · 17/02/2022 22:33

Cornwall seafront home.
Fireplaces all laid for fires and scuttles filled on both floors.
Rayburn lit and banked for overnight.
Candles matches and torches in all bedrooms and sitting room.
Dogs games and kongs filled with treats if unable to have their walks tomorrow.
Phones charged and landline plugged in.
Water, food, wind up radios etc all ready as I'm a prepper and keep these items as routine.
Dropped off emergency kit to neighbour on her own with her under fives and wrestled with her trampoline together.

I think we will probably not need these measures but I'm a control freak

RestingStitchFace · 17/02/2022 22:53

Put fresh batteries in all the torches. Also found candles and matches.

DH has been out in the garden and picking up all the loose stuff (toys etc) and putting it in the shed.

Cactuslockdown · 17/02/2022 22:57

Parked a bit further away from our big tree!!!

Magicmelodies21 · 17/02/2022 23:03

In the red zone and feeling pretty apprehensive now Shock. Garden furniture all moved but really worried about a massive tree in the back of the garden and an old roof !! My teenage kids are thinking I am over reacting , hope they’re right !!

covidadvice · 17/02/2022 23:09

I live in Aberdeenshire and the storms that hit us in december was horrendous and had next to no news coverage! So I'm surprised there's so much about this storm before it's even hit.
Was a proper crisis up here in December when storm Arwen hit. Homes went days and days without power, some up to 10 days, people was struggling for food, trees fallen everywhere, and homes and cars damaged. It was chaos. They even had to get the army in to provide support to those affected. Luckily we wasn't too badly affected but it really was awful to witness the chaos it caused: so hope everyone stays safe Daffodil

Beachbreak2411 · 17/02/2022 23:11

In red zone with the worst weather warning for 30 years here. I’m at work early tomorrow. So I’ve ironed uniform and washed hair tonight while I still have power. Phone fully charged and power bank charged.

RaininSummer · 17/02/2022 23:23

Nothing but I know where the candles and matches are.

SuperSocks · 17/02/2022 23:48

I've done several quick washes so now at least if we have now power for days, I'll still have clean knickers!! Wondering if I should bake bread... I have a bread machine but I don't like the spongy texture of the usual stuff. I only like the 'quick bake' loaves that are so dense they give you major indigestion, but so delicious you eat 3/4 of a loaf at once!!

How did everyone get on in the storm? Did you all need any of the prep you did? I ended up in a situation that had me questioning what on earth I should do…. So phone network went for almost all day which was ok until power went so no WiFi effectively cutting me off from the outside world, I felt quite vulnerable for those 2 hours so how do you prep for that situation?
