I'm not expecting the world to end after brexit, but I do think getting fresh fruit / veg might be tricky for a while.

Ive started buying a few tins of fruit with every shop, and my plan is to shop near the end of december and get in some berries / soft fruit which will hopefully last a couple of weeks, and some apples / pears etc while will last a couple more in the fridge. Then we'll be onto tinned stuff.

Is there anything else I can do? Anything I've not thought of? How do you like to eat tinned fruit?

Wasn’t me, I’ve only got two tins!

CookieMumsters · 11/11/2020 21:57

I didn't know tinned mandarins were a thing, but I've been looking for some to try - I haven't found any either

Yes tinned mandarins are yum with custard Smile

lexloofah · 12/11/2020 11:26

Tinned mandarins and their juice suspended in an orange jelly are delish, DCs don't like it, all the more for me, they can have a vit c tab

BlackeyedSusan · 12/11/2020 14:38

Tinned fruit has been difficult to get for a few months now. Resorted to more expensive pineapple tins now.

CookieMumsters · 16/11/2020 22:02

I've discovered condensed milk. Never had it before, bloody lovely! I'm putting it on all of the fruit!

I found tinned mandarins in Tesco last week.

Love condensed milk Cookie, lovely with jelly and fruit.

Dried apricots chopped up and eaten with yoghurt are delicious.
Jars of apple sauce are great in homemade muesli or porridge.
Polish shops sell great bottled fruit (and veg).
Tinned mango puree - makes good mango lassi.

MarshmallowManiac · 17/11/2020 12:57

Never would have thought of apple sauce on cereal Greek thanks for that, never had a mango lassi might try it. Also don't forget guys fruit lasts so much longer in the fridge.

I’ve been freezing banana and strawberries/raspberries and manage and pineapple in bags so I can make kids smothies every day if i can’t get other fruit. Youngest lives raisins and yo-yos (dried fruit) and nakd bars (dried fruit and nuts) but eldest and I don’t really like any dried fruit.
Apple purée is brilliant in cake recipes btw, can replace some butter/sugar with it to make healthy breakfast muffins.
Have order a veg box from local farm so hope that keeps delivery something. Even if it’s just carrots I’ll be happy.

Starting to make chutney this week, will that count as fruit? 😀1

My fruit and veg prep is coming along nicely now

As close to end of December as possible I'm going to buy lots of apples, carrots, onions and potatoes - they last in my garage for ages. I've also signed up with a local grower for a fruit and veg box so hopefully that will continue to operate.

Frozen

Onions, peas, peppers, mixed chargrilled Mediterranean veg, butternut squash, avocado,
Steam fresh bags of broccoli, carrots and sweet corn (so easy for the kids), raspberries, mango, blueberries, juiced oranges

Shelf

Dole pots of peaches in juice, nakd bars, tinned tomatoes, tinned carrots, tinned mushrooms, tinned ratatouille, dried apricots, raisins, dried cranberries, dried apples, dried pears and dried pineapple.

I've also bought some of the baby food pouch range that Ellas do - they do one they call the pink one which is raspberries, strawberries and berries (I think) and I'm sure the kids will eat them if they are cold! Just like a smoothie pouch.

If all else fails I've bought some heavy duty multivitamins for kids so that will have to do for a while Grin

Impatientwino · 25/11/2020 22:14

Oh also jarred peppers, jarred artichokes and pickled onions!

CookieMumsters · 25/11/2020 23:22

@Impatientwino how do you store the fruit / veg in your garage? And jarred peppers, I've never seen them. How are they?

OP posts:
Impatientwino · 26/11/2020 07:23

@CookieMumsters

I only mean a few weeks by ages but I store them in a crate with newspaper scrunched around them. My garage is cold and dark but not damp so things tend to last in there.

I buy three types of jarred peppers from Sainsburys - see 3 pics attached. The last hot ones are also available as mild.

Unwashed carrots and potatoes store better if you can find them, farm shop best bet and in a sack to block out the light. We have to put on a shelf as when I left them on the floor the mice had a merry old time

MarshmallowManiac · 26/11/2020 11:08

Have bought large freezer bags to put in courgettes and peppers to put in fajitas or together with a pasta dinner. Have also seen jars of peppers, courgettes and aubergines which I will also buy and my DC love, and also love dried apricots and prunes on my cereal and in my yoghurt. Wish the DC would eat them too Grin I also store onions, potatoes, squash an swede in shed. Lots of veg keep well in fridge like apples, tomatoes and fresh hummus lasts ages! Also put your veg in a dark cupboard and it will stay fresh much longer.

Great idea about the smoothie fruit goodname. You could make Mango chutney and tomato chutney which would be both fruit.
Quite a few places suspend their veg box between March and May time as they cannot provide enough available veg between those times because of the hunger gap in UK. I would enquire about that just to be sure.

That's my plan too Impatientwino about the buying in December. Grin

MarshmallowManiac · 26/11/2020 11:12

Wanted to also stock up on juices so the kids and us can get their vitamin C.

BlackeyedSusan · 26/11/2020 12:25

Gradually building the raisins, sultanas and apricot stash again.

Pissed off with the whole thing.

MarshmallowManiac · 26/11/2020 16:15

Yes mega pissed at this end too Blackeyed Sad

MarshmallowManiac · 26/11/2020 16:17

I've started sprouting seeds for a fresh veg boost. Very simple, absolutely not sugar involved.

DC might be more interested if they have grown tbe sprouts themselves.

goodname · 26/11/2020 19:48

Sprouting is a great idea, so healthy and can just eat by the handful. Cress grows in a couple of days too and you can still grow herbs on a windowsill I guess.

goodname · 26/11/2020 19:49

Also very fed up with the idea of it all

MarshmallowManiac · 26/11/2020 19:52

Downloaded the Lidl app a little while ago and to start they give u £5 to download it. They give u money off vouchers and just received a £10 voucher off, very happy with it.

Greektome · 26/11/2020 21:04

Just ordered a big bag of cress seeds, to grow on kitchen paper. Can't hurt.
