Tinned meat - is anything nice?

GreyishDays · 21/10/2020 11:00

We tried the M&S steak and it was pretty good, but ideally we’d get something online from Sainsbury’s. I see they do a tinned mince and onion. Anyone tried it (or from a different supermarket)? Or anything else?

I am trying to find protein sources that we would actually eat normally. Well normally-ish.

Never eat them as don't appeal to me.
For tinned protein I would much rather sardines, tuna, mackerel, baked beans, kidney beans etc :)

I like the tinned chicken in white sauce. My kids both like it too.

Tinned sausages and beans?

HasaDigaEebowai · 21/10/2020 11:08

Out of all of them the chicken in white sauce is the best IMO.

I like corned beef but I'm a child of the 70s so Im used to it. DC turn their noses up.

DeadBod · 21/10/2020 11:08

Tinned M&S chicken curry is nice.

PurpleWave · 21/10/2020 11:17

It's gets a bad rap but Spam is surprisingly nice if you slice it and fry it like bacon.

AriettyHomily · 21/10/2020 11:21

I just got a flashback to tinned ham, I used to love it as a kid.

Most of the M&S stuff is good, used to get food parcels from my mum at uni. Stewing beef, chilli, smoked chicken, chicken in white sauce, chicken curry, beef curry.

I wouldn't chose to eat it but if I had to it's fine.

Tesco tinned chicken tikka masala is good

Mumdiva99 · 21/10/2020 11:24

@purplewave I agree. I had a lifetime aversion to Spam due to spam fritters on the school dinner menu. The I met my OH and his family chop and fry it and put it in egg fried rice. It bares no resemblance to the spam of childhood. Absolutely delicious. (But not overly healthy so a treat not for every day....)

So would I, but some of my family won’t. Grr.

I find most Mackerel in tins tastes ok. Same with anchovy for adding to dishes for an extra kick.

The only meats I've found any good are all from M&S (sorry). Others are not palatable and we've worked out way through most.

GreyishDays · 21/10/2020 11:26

Thanks everyone, I’ll take the plunge and try the odd thing I think!

I really like the Asda minced beef and onion (72%meat) I also have tinned tuna and mackerel, tinned chicken in cream sauce. I also have lentils, split peas etc but I eat a lot of them normally

planningaheadtoday · 21/10/2020 11:27

I buy good quality fresh meat and use the library method of freezing. This means you end up with book shaped items that fully fill your freezer with no wasted space or any air gaps.

If you have a freezer it might be a good way to manage.

GroundAlmonds · 21/10/2020 11:29

Actually just had tinned ham from the Brexit stash yesterday. I hadn’t had it since childhood at my grandma’s house, and wasn’t expecting to like it. It was really nice. I will use these tins up and buy more for the emergency supplies.

dolphinpose · 21/10/2020 11:31

Tinned ham is fine. Sliced finely for sandwiches or in chunks to heat up (with pineapple like 1970s gammon steaks Grin)

We do have frozen stuff, I’m just trying to have a non frozen stash too though. Smile

Haggis in a tin is the food of the Gods

Good protein, amazing with tomato ketchup if you're a kid (also the way I eat it Grin)

Sorry @planningaheadtoday could you elaborate? A quick Google was not particularly edifying!

BlackeyedSusan · 21/10/2020 11:51

Do they eat nuts and seeds? Wholewheat pasta and bread? Can you start diluting minced beef with lentils to make it go further? Do they eat chilli in which case kidney beans and brown rice will add to the proteins.

BlackeyedSusan · 21/10/2020 11:54

Library: freeze portions in bags on baking tray very thin, once frozen stack as books. I used to do similar with old cuboid margarine tubs.

BahHumbygge · 21/10/2020 11:56

Can anyone recommend any good gluten free tinned stews/meals? I have got a shelf of Morrisons beef madras in the stash. It's really nice with a fried onion and tinned carrots, but looking for more ideas for variety. Unimpressed with the morrisons chicken curry.

Can't stand tinned ham, and can just about tolerate corned beef in an end-of-days type scenario. Have also stocked up with salmon/tuna/sardines/mackerel.

musicalfrog · 21/10/2020 11:59

Tinned chilli and curry is nice.

haba · 21/10/2020 12:02

Ah, thank you @BlackeyedSusan
I too require wheat free proteins...
The "Look what we found" range have a chili which passes, but the lamb hotpot (stew?) has milk in unfortunately. Its tasty though, for those that can eat milk. (It really will be a splash, I'm sure).

GroundAlmonds · 21/10/2020 12:04

@BahHumbygge

This is the absolute favourite tinned standby for the coeliacs in this house. Not exactly stew but lots of meat in it. I get moaned at if we run out.

I do add some lentils to spag bol, but it needs to be at an undetectable level. DH gags on pulses unfortunately. So limiting!

They do eat nuts though, so I am stocking up on those and peanut butter.

Wholemeal pasta and brown rice we wouldn’t normally eat so I’m unwilling to stock up too much, as they don’t really help on the protein front.
