Tinned meat - is anything nice?

We tried the M&S steak and it was pretty good, but ideally we’d get something online from Sainsbury’s. I see they do a tinned mince and onion. Anyone tried it (or from a different supermarket)? Or anything else?

I am trying to find protein sources that we would actually eat normally. Well normally-ish.

Oh thanks, that sounds quite good actually. I'll pick some up next time I'm shopping with some ready made puff pastry and do a pie.

I don’t put eggs in my corned beef hash but I’m keen to try warm milk instead of cold. I do stick a tin of beans in with the corned beef & onions plus some Worcestershire sauce or Henderson’s relish depending on which I have in. Then some cheese on top for me & DS2.

lakesidewinter · 21/10/2020 22:39

In the USA I can buy tinned hash.
DC and DH all really liked it.

Tinned stewed steak from Asda is great, about 175 cals but 30g protein per half tin.

Asda's white chicken in sauce is great.

Also most of the chicken casseroles are great ... an entire meal in a tin!

I always wonder what is actually in tinned meat that allows it to be stored in a cupboard and lasts about a year 😳

misskick · 21/10/2020 23:37

Off subject I know but it baffles me

It's what isn't in tinned meat (or other stuff) which allows it to be stored. It's heated in the can which kills all the bugs.
PickAChew · 21/10/2020 23:47

Markses stuff was good enough for Delia! I find tinned corned beef acceptable but most other stuff makes my wee smell. Funny.

Have tinned Tina, salmon and beans in my brexit stash.

ErrolTheDragon · 21/10/2020 23:54

My current favourite canned proteins - useful for a quick lunch - are tinned skippers in tomato sauce or tinned marinated tofu.

PickAChew · 21/10/2020 23:54

@SonjaMorgan

We use bacon grill and the cheaper version of spam but I do think it depends on the type of foods you eat. We love onigiri, onigirazu, budae jjigae, bibimbap and fried rice. I then use bacon grill for an English style breakfast (that we always eat at dinner).
The ironic thing about this is that I've not been able to find gochugang paste since about Feb.
PickAChew · 21/10/2020 23:55

Tinned pilchards are great, btw.

timeisnotaline · 22/10/2020 00:01

What about whole salamis and chorizos? They should keep for a year at least. We would always take a whole salami when hiking for several days.

@haba the library method of freezing I find really works. I hope I can describe it properly.

I freeze something fresh, it doesn't work with pre frozen, into a large rectangular container. I push it down firmly and cover to freeze. Once it's frozen I take it out and pop it out of the reusable container. Then put it in a large zip lock bag and press all the air out. Then write on the spine what's in it, how much, and when it was frozen. This can go into your freezer spine upwards, like a book. If you use the same sized freezing container only the thickness of the package changes. The size remains constant. So the next item joins it and all the spines are upwards. This creates a library. Easily accessible. Frozen blocks in a book shape. No wasted space at all. It works with cheese too if it's grated.

I hope this makes sense.

Grants A&B roll. Sliced on thick cut plain mother's pride bread. And a pot of tea.

stillsomewhatsheldonesque · 22/10/2020 00:16

Does it still taste the same @Justmuddlingalong ?

I mentioned this up thread but I’m almost scared to try it.

Justmuddlingalong · 22/10/2020 00:20

@stillsomewhatsheldonesque Sorry, I missed that. It still tastes the same to me. Sainsbo's sells it. For a total pig outery piece I add Heinz sandwich spread. 😋

TheFormerPorpentinaScamander · 22/10/2020 00:24

Chicken in white sauce. I used to have it with a pack of microwave mushroom rice for lunch at work.

Corned beef hash, one of ds2s favourite meals. I've also made my own corned beef bakes with ready made puff pastry when I fancy a Greggs.

stillsomewhatsheldonesque · 22/10/2020 00:25

Ok flower. That is good to hear! I have such fond memories of it and will just haul up my big girl pants and give it a whirl.

So many loves of my yoof have been interfered with. I’m a bit wary nowadays.

😊 thank you. And I might give the Heinz a go as well Wink

Sainsburys tinned chicken balti is pleasant, not as nice as the fresh but perfectly enjoyable. Loads of chicken breast in it and it's low in
saturated fat.

Trackandtrace · 22/10/2020 07:15

@HasaDigaEebowai

I know I go on about this on all the prepping threads but do look at dried soya mince (available at holland and barratt and other places). DS1 turned veggie at the start of the year and it forced me to reconsider some of our prepping (and some of our meals in general). A bag of dried soya mince is very light and easy to store and for £1.99 (also often on offer for buy one get one half price) it would make four family sized (two adult two teen boys) bolognese/chilli type meals for us. We hardly ever have beef mince now and don't miss it at all.

It's my number one food prepping item.

Once you open the packetmince. How long does it last?

I'm no expert but I'm reasonably confident that its the canning process which preserves it rather than chemicals and preservatives...could be wrong.
Fancycrackers · 22/10/2020 07:51

Recently tried tinned curries from Sainsbury's - chicken korma and chicken balti and very pleasantly surprised. Definitely adding more to my reserves.

It lasts a lot longer than a year. As already said, the bugs that cause decay are all killed off by heat in the canning process.

There was a programme about it on the TV where they opened a tin of fish dating from the early 1970s and it it proved perfectly safe to eat.

RhubarbTea · 22/10/2020 10:54

Tesco tinned chilli con carne is pretty good, and I also rate Princes mackerel in spicy tomato sauce, flaked on to pre toasted bread and then under the grill to heat it through with extra black pepper sprinkled on. That makes a nice lunch or snack.
