Sprayitall · 13/04/2020 12:38

Hi all, starting this thread to continue from preppers thread 16. Because we are amidst a pandemic now, I have changed the title to prepping amidst pandemic than “for pandemic”. I hope all of you keep well amidst this and get all the help, support and hope needed to cope during this challenging times. Feel free to add your thoughts, preps and ideas here.

Moss it will be of use in Winter, as you can pick the veg and freeze it Smile

Flagsfiend · 30/07/2020 12:49

@mosscarpet

so you see, this is why I never thought of myself as a prepper - I just googled preppers uk to see if there were another good websites with tips and it took me to a sight that tried to sell me a crossbow!!
I'm fairly sure crossbows are illegal in the UK, also not much use against a virus...
Flagsfiend · 30/07/2020 12:52

Okay so I looked up crossbows, you can legally own one if you are over 18 however it is illegal to hunt with it or carry it around in public. I guess learning archery could be a fun lockdown activity if you have a very large garden.

Rowanberries · 30/07/2020 13:45

Oooh mosscarpet, where did you find orange and lemon slices? DH loves them and I had real problems finding them last Christmas.

I couldnt get them last year either - and my Mum was also unable to get any. Managed to find them on amazon (although I am trying to use amazon less it is a gradual process!) www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B07HLCG3MN/ref=twister_B07HL7MBYF?psc=1&_encoding=UTF8&tag=mumsnetforu03-21

Re the crossbow - I was quite suprised too! Having said that my oldest dd does do archery and has a proper bow and arrows etc so guess we are more prepared than I realised!!

MarshmallowManiac · 30/07/2020 14:19

Thanks for the tip Moss, love Orange and Lemon slices, must pop some in my basket Smile

Cattiwampus · 30/07/2020 14:25

mosscarpet our garage is a workshop.
I’ve got storage bags and baskets hanging from hooks in the ceiling, and I’ve put a couple of planks on the rafters and used them.

oh, hanging things form the ceiling is a good idea, thanks.

Thank you! Those are going in the Christmas stash. Smile Now I just have to find somewhere to hide the Christmas stash as my usual places are stocked up with pandemic prep...

MarshmallowManiac · 30/07/2020 16:55

How's the Christmas stash going Rowan? In this house we are slowly getting there, have bought a few stocking fillers for the DC, Winter stash further along with pasta, rice, tins and a few treats, my Christmas stash is slowly filling up my wardrobe away from prying --eyes Grin Grin

Rowanberries · 30/07/2020 18:23

Well I've got my mincemeat which I picked up in January for 10p Grin. And a few presents for the kids, but I need to be much more organised than I am usually as me and DH normally spend my November birthday doing a big present shop. Don't want to rely on doing that this year!

I'm going to get the fairy lights out when the nights start drawing in. I think that will make things feel a bit more cosy.

The general winter stash is very good. DH has properly got on board with it rather than just humouring me like he did with my Brexit stash. DD is in the vulnerable category and we really struggled to get a shopping slot but I was able to produce pretty much everything we needed from the Brexit cupboard. Including a bottle of bourbon for his birthday pressie. Grin

MarshmallowManiac · 30/07/2020 18:58

Wow you're really organised Rowan, I usually spend my November birthday thinking about Christmas too but not anymore! We will be all sorted long before that won't we Grin My DD and I are both in the vulnerable group, so really need to get on with it. Yes I raided totally obliterated my Brexit stash too Smile

MarshmallowManiac · 30/07/2020 18:59

Fairy lights sound lovely too. Smile

IceCreamAndCandyfloss · 31/07/2020 15:08

teaflake I used Savers online for most bar the spare thermometer and oximeter. They do cleaning products too so I stocked up on those on the same delivery. Delivery will take a few days but I used them before for toiletries and was very impressed with the service, stock and prices. The stock notification service is great for the items in demand,

mosscarpet · 31/07/2020 20:48

How is everyone getting on ? I had my first delivery from Who Gives a Crap today (why am I excited about toilet roll???!!!) Also my 2 emergency temporary fillings arrived to be stashed away. Sadly had to break out my emergency stash of aa batteries as somehow had forgotten to replenish the regular stock (yes, it seems ds is spending too much time using x box remotes...ooops!) so need to replace them. I have moved and cleaned my greenhouse and almost ready to get my raised bed set up. Hoping I may manage maybe some lettuce or something before winter if I'm quick? Oldest dds are mocking me - "she's got bags of pasta in the garage again! Have you seen the massive box of toilet rolls?" but they will be glad in the end. It is making me feel so much better to feel I am kind of in control depsite what is unfolding around us. Anyway... long week back at work survived so going to reward myself with a glass of vino.

TiddleTaddleTat · 31/07/2020 21:18

Checking in again, I've not been in for a while.
Got a chest freezer arriving tomorrow which I'm rather excited about.
Planning to order a bunch of GF voakes pies which I've wanted to do for ages, for the winter season (I'm coeliac)
Also need to do a bunch of shopping for the first aid kit and cleaning cupboard at home bargains. Can't find an equivalently cheap online retailer?
Preps are looking OK after quite a bit of stocking up for Brexit and then over the past few months, but have nothing much for Xmas or winter in general. My income will also be reducing by about 20% in a month's time.
Have been spending about 30% more than usual food shop on adding to preps which simply won't be possible when my income comes down.
What I have got is a food processor though so am aiming to make a lot of batch cooked meals, using that and the slow cooker, that I can freeze and use when the dark cold nights draw in.

MarshmallowManiac · 31/07/2020 21:33

Will have to try WFAC Moss heard so many good things. I am going to try and get some Autumn veg and flowers when I get back from holiday. My DC mock me too Grin but they're happy when we don't need to go out shopping sometimes. It gives you an unimaginable feeling to have a full cupboard doesn't it Smile

Love HB Tiddle slowly trying to stock up for Winter and Christmas too, have got vouchers from Sainsbury's so am going to use the money off to improve my stash. Love my slow cooker too Smile

teaflake · 31/07/2020 22:31

IceCreamAndCandyfloss - thank you.

Rowanberries · 01/08/2020 08:04

I too love the feeling of having full cupboards. I am not the most organised person normally so it gives me a great sense of achievement to be able to produce what is needed when someone goes "We've run out of..."

This weekend's task is to order logs for the wood burner. We've a good stock already but I want to be prepared in case of another beast from the east situation.

mosscarpet · 01/08/2020 08:36

morning all.
yes indeed , hving a good supply of everything really helps me to feel calmer. My natural perosnality is to be quite organised and to plan ahead, but over recent years events have somewhat overtaken me and at times my mental health hasnt been great and I havent been as organised as I would have liked, so it feels good to be back planning and prepping again. Grin
first lot of milk was delivered this morning. Not totally preppeing related I know, but maked me happy to see the bottles on the doorstep, knowing they have come from cows on a farm only about 4 miles away Grin

tasks for today include setting up my raised bed for veg planting, ordering more batteries for the stash, moving some shelving aorund in the garage to try to create a bit more space.
Also have some longlife milk about to go out of date (from previous stash) so going to make yogurt in the instant pot.

Happy prepping all. Grin

mosscarpet · 01/08/2020 08:37

made, not maked!!

Rowanberries · 01/08/2020 18:09

Tomorrow we have decided to prep for school. I'm having trouble believing it will actually happen but we better prep for it just in case things improve.

Uniform is already bought so it is school shoes, trainers and new winter coats given they've all shot up recently. Plus next size up clothes in preparation for the next growth spurt.

CrepuscularCritter · 01/08/2020 20:14

Oooooh Voakes pies! Tiddles (Also coeliac)

lexloofah · 01/08/2020 21:40

We tortured the DCs on the hottest day of the year trying on woolies, winter coats and snow boots! Orders now placed for new sizes. Given the way this year has gone so far would not be surprised if it is harshest winter on record

Already bought school shoes but unlabelled and still in the box just in case they don't go back but I think they will although prepared for them to be in and out.

Winter veg patch: not too late for sowing swede, perpetual spinach and carrots now. I am going to try late potatoes this year. could also get things in for an early start next spring. Garlic will go in around November.

AlohaMolly · 03/08/2020 00:12

Hello everyone I was on the original threads but I, too, tailed off towards the end. It struck me though that when things happen, they happen quickly, like Spain/Luxembourg/the north west, so I want to speed my preps up.

I’ve replenished my supplies from the beginning of lockdown and am now concentrating on other things than food. I’m buying bigger sizes of clothes for DS and picked up decent shoes for him in theNext sale, as well as convinced my mum to get him a coat! I’m going to look for decent wet weather gear as he’s grown out of his, and I need waterproof trousers if possible.

My MIL bought me a clever chef, which isn’t quite a bread maker but I can rise and bake it in there... but it’s also a yoghurt maker. I get my fruit and veg delivered and found a milkman, so bread and yoghurt (that I make labneh with, thanks to a tip from someone lovely on here!) were the ‘essentials’ that I couldn’t source until now. It also means that I don’t have to take up freezer space with bread.

I’m hitting up all the sales for Christmas presents for family.

My brother has sprung a registry office wedding on us on 28th August and I live 300 miles away so need to ask for the time off work. I’m so convinced some sort of restrictions will be imposed, either for them in England or for me in Wales, that will mean we can’t go that h haven’t bothered asking for the day off yet Blush
