A question for the preppers

A question for the preppers who have been on the ball - In light of the shortages on the shelf, are you continuing to prep ? At what point is 'enough is enough' ?

OP posts:

I did some 'light' prepping. I bought 50 loo rolls in January, 50 tins of beans and a few other essentials like that. I am now just trying to not use the stash and keep well stocked, but I am only buying what I need.

People take the piss out of preppers but we're now not the ones causing shortages so people should be thanking us!

Humina · 16/03/2020 12:46

I'm just maintaining and using now. I haven't needed to shop for any of the shortage stuff as I already had it. It's not currently a supply chain issue, so there's no immediate panic as I have plenty in and I think it will be back in the shops soon.

RhubarbTea · 16/03/2020 12:47

No, not much now - I am continuing to shop as normal for my regular weekly food, adding a few extras that I still need but generally not stocking up. I did that in Jan/Feb kind of time. And even prior to that, for Brexit.

WellTidy · 16/03/2020 12:50

I am just buying fresh now. So not touching what is in the freezer or pantry, and just buying what I need fresh for the week. I haven't had any problems at all buying fish, meat, fruit, veg, dairy etc.

Hollyhead

I did some 'light' prepping. I bought 50 loo rolls in January, 50 tins of beans and a few other essentials like that.

This is a whole new world to me.

That would seem like 'extreme' prepping to me (in context: never 'prepped').

You knew loo roll would become scarce? Back in January?

I'm just planning on starting buying the Daily Mail if the Andrex situation gets dire.*

Joke!*

**I would never buy the Daily Mail.
I'll pinch the free copies from Waitrose.

LaMarschallin · 16/03/2020 12:57

WellTidy

I am just buying fresh now.

On a more serious note, that's what I'm doing now.
Have enough preserved food in various forms for a few weeks (just by being mean and buying up offers, and not liking throwing away leftovers).

Does this make me a prepper?

BiddyPop · 16/03/2020 12:59

I’m just buying fresh at the moment also and trying to keep fridge relatively well stocked in case more stringent measures are needed but balancing with avoiding shops as much as possible.

I have an online order (set up 2 weeks ago) coming on Thursday evening and I may amend that tomorrow when I see how things really are. But that is pretty much a normal weekly shop - fresh fruit and veg, milk, meat, a bag of pasta, a few cans of beer, squash etc - I have a single medium sized pack of toilet rolls in the order for next week when I reckon my stocks will be down but not gone, and a bag of rice in that one as well. But we would use all those in normal dinners etc in that time.

RaininSummer · 16/03/2020 13:08

Just doing normal shopping to keep my supplies up as had a stash for Brexitty problems.

Whatthefoxgoingon · 16/03/2020 13:14

No further prepping here. Just doing our normal food shopping. Though delivery slots are in short supply indeed!

I did some prepping when i heard about this on the 10th jan. Glad i did because i have no car. I still have to work.

Prepping is not always selfish.
When i was prepping everybody was mocking me.
Im still more worried than average though i think

Thisvirusisawful · 16/03/2020 14:30

I don't get why that's a surprise whether the reason was Brexit, snow, floods or a virus - preppers think ahead - who knew 🤷

Thisvirusisawful · 16/03/2020 14:32

That would seem like 'extreme' prepping to me (in context: never 'prepped').

Really isn't extreme, just sensible.

Just buying fresh, definitely am ok for everything else. Did not know things would be bad now and going forward, but wasn't taking the risk. The idea was not to amass food and supplies and continue amassing them - it was to make sure we didn't need to be in the supermarket when the panic buying started. So far so good.

TheYearOfTheDog · 16/03/2020 14:35

I agree, if the last few years have shown us anything (with being snowed in in MARCH, storm ophelia, covid-19) it is sensible to have supplies.

AutumnCrow · 16/03/2020 14:37

Oh god yes, I've stopped now. It's the turn of other people to buy what they need, as I can now stay out of shops.

I have some things to give away, too.

Everything I have was to prep for brexit. Including bog roll. I've already given some of that away.

I'm a prepper, not an arsehole.

TheYearOfTheDog · 16/03/2020 14:39

Lol yes, i havent had to go near a supermarket.

nibdedibble · 16/03/2020 14:40

Yes exactly about having stuff to give away. We have enough supplies to make meals to leave for neighbours if people in my street get sick.

Waitasecond · 16/03/2020 14:40

I’m just shopping normally (or as close to normally as possible!). I don’t have the best preps compared to some but it’s enough to keep my family going for a while.

FusionChefGeoff · 16/03/2020 14:41

I've topped up a few things a couple of weeks ago and now just doing normal shopping - if a little on the large side Grin.

bellinisurge · 16/03/2020 14:47

I shop as normal safe in the knowledge that if I can't get something, I get poorly, I don't need any drama, etc etc, I can just open my cupboards and I have all I need. Including dehydrated fruit and veg which is surprisingly yummy.

HappyAsASandboy · 16/03/2020 14:50

I consider myself a convenience prepper! I shop in bulk and hold a fair amount "in stock" at home - my kids refer to the utility room as the shop. I did get extra in due to Brexit concerns, which I am now using up slowly, and will probably do that again towards the end of the year in preparation for January 2021 actual Brexit.

I generally have a fair amount in stock at home; stuff for laundry for several months (bulk buying), 25 ish tins of beans, a similar number of each of three soup flavours, 5-10kg of pasta, however many loo rolls are left from the last box of 50 ish we bought, a few kg spaghetti, 25 ish cans of tuna, 25 ish cans of tomatoes, 5-10 boxes of cereal, a few kg of oats/flour/sugar, 10 ish blocks of butter, 6 ish blocks of cheese, etc etc. I just use them and replace them every now and then so there's always some level of "preparedness".

My normal levels of preparedness are meaning I am not panic buying now. My natural disposition would be to panic buy, so I am glad not to be adding to the situation! I am continuing my normal shopping now, with a few extra meat items to stock up the freezer.

I live rurally and am comforted by the fact that as long as electricity keeps going we could be self-sufficient for a month or so (though I'd miss milk and fresh fruit/veg). To be honest if things went totally belly up and we lost electricity we'd be ok for a good while though there'd be a lot less meat!

cowfacemonkey · 16/03/2020 14:51

I've just been out today to buy fresh food. I wasn't a Brexit prepper but have been slowly stocking up for the last 4 weeks in light of CV. Like others will just focus on keeping the fridge stocked with fresh food and only using that for now and leave freezer and pantry alone.

The nicest thing about having already done a bit of prep is that as a family we were able to stay in all weekend and avoid the supermarket madness comfortable in the knowledge that we had what we need and wouldn't be contributing to the immediate shortages.

I'm not sure if I feel "enough is enough" yet but I think that is just the feeling of wanting to be proactive in uncertain times. So I have decided to stock up on useful but not vital items like hoover bags and paint so if we lock down I can crack on with some decorating!

LaMarschallin · 16/03/2020 14:52

You knew loo roll would become scarce? Back in January?

I promise I'm not taking the piss - even though I'm asking about toilet paper.

How did you know?
And why does it - more than some other things - become hard to get?

I'm really fine for it because, as I said, I'm mean and, ages ago, ended up with a mad amount because of a special offer.
Or at least I thought I was...

Now I feel this bonkers (to my mind) urge to check.

I promise I'm asking this seriously.
I've got 3 part-used rolls in the bathrooms. I already had 4 in stock but, to my shame, bought 6 today in M&S.

There's just DH and me.

This is more than enough, surely?

I was convinced it was until I heard "our" cashier being told by the cashier on the next till: "Don't serve that ...mumble... lady with any more toilet paper. She's already been in three times to buy two 6 packs".

Maybe what she's prepping for is one of those bridal showers where they have opposing teams manufacturing a wedding dress out of Andrex?
