Prepping for a Pandemic... 15

A lot of us have been here before. We Prepped for Brexit. Some of us are Heathcare workers. We prepare for the worst every day. It's difficult to predict what will happen in our lives. In our lifetime. Will we get Cancer? Will a huge meteorite wipe the world out?

One thing is for sure, this new virus is either affecting us, or is going to affect us all very soon. You are all already onboard. I hope you are prepared and much as you can be. And in the meantime this thread is here to support us all.

This week will bring many new challenges. We are almost certain to have some sort of lockdown. Like other parts of Europe. We aren't special. We aren't different. We are all
fragile souls. But I hope we live to tell the tale.

God Speed.

As much as professionally and personally a pandemic scares me, I’ll be honest it’s the impact a pandemic has on society that scares me the most. In particular I’m afraid of civil disobedience such as looting, riots and fights in supermarkets. I’m hoping the threat of infection quells this somewhat.

Can't find anything about how long the virus lasts on fruit. I've just been washing in a normal washing up water solution. And assuming that anything in plastic is contaminated, so either washing, leaving for 3 days in a safe place out of the way, or taking out and repacking, and binning package then washing hands. Post, again assuming it's contaminated and carefully opening and disposing of, and washing hands. Depends what it is and how long I think it's been in transit, as to how I treat the contents.

Thanks @Whatthefoxgoingon

BanKittenHeels · 16/03/2020 16:34

I’m also changing my contraception from the pill to an alternative method in direct response to this emergency.

Legoandloldolls · 16/03/2020 16:34

If think ofWarren is on the other thread? I do dip into that but not for a few days. The 'it's no worse than a splinter!!!' Posts was raising my blood pressure.

I bet they feel silly now..... but I doubt it. Still lots of people in my life in denial. Dispite everything turning to shit around them

itsnotjustflu · 16/03/2020 16:35

I think the whatsapp group was mentioned on one of the earlier threads 😃👍

Teaand · 16/03/2020 16:35

I have just joined mumsnet after lurking on the prepping pages here and elsewhere for a number of years and have been following prepping for a pandemic since the first thread.

Thank you to all the posters over the threads for all the useful information.

I live in a very rural location and a number of village and school events have been cancelled and talking to members of the community there is an underlying fear but also people finding ways to help those around them.

One of my last preps over the weekend was to get the childrens feet measured and new shoes and wellies were brought for all the time they are going to spend in the garden.

Whatthefoxgoingon · 16/03/2020 16:36

The Clown-in-Charge is coming on at 4:45 pm.

Prepare your blood pressure medication.

Legoandloldolls · 16/03/2020 16:40

I hate this uncertainty.

How will ever know if we are immune if we never get tested? With a disabled child, if I knew I was immune I could help more when I recover but I wont risk it as a primary carer if there is any chance I just had the shits and a cought ( what a frightening thought..... orders tarpaulin...)

Legoandloldolls · 16/03/2020 16:40

Is slowing down? FFS ....

Whatthefoxgoingon · 16/03/2020 16:42

If that dimwit claims we are getting fewer cases now, I swear I will throw something at the tv!

Legoandloldolls · 16/03/2020 16:44

Lies, damn lies and statistics......

Legoandloldolls · 16/03/2020 16:45

As a token thought. I wish my first prep on thread on was to defrost my freezer. It has more ice than the Antarctic

MrsWhites · 16/03/2020 16:50

I’m out at the moment so can’t watch the press conference. So would appreciate any key points, trying to get it on bbc news but they are so slow to update the live feed (either that or my 4g is just rubbish).

I defrosted my freezer a few weeks ago when this all started, so glad I did now. Actually need to top up on a few kids basics like waffles and fish fingers tomorrow!

wheresmymojo · 16/03/2020 16:50

He's on - I will do key points as they come up

VenetoResident · 16/03/2020 16:51

Watching from 🇮🇹

wheresmymojo · 16/03/2020 16:52

Approaching fast growth

If you or anyone in the house has cough or fever - all stay at home for 14 days. Don't go out even for food but can go out to exercise

If can't get help to get groceries must do what is possible to limit social contact

wheresmymojo · 16/03/2020 16:53

Stop all unnecessary travel

Avoid pubs, clubs, etc

Work from home if you can

Avoid all unnecessary social contact

wheresmymojo · 16/03/2020 16:54

Over 70s, preggos and certain health conditions (not yet said what) by this coming weekend should be shielded from social contact for 12 weeks

wheresmymojo · 16/03/2020 16:56

London is a few weeks ahead.

To slow spread in London - Londoners must pay particular attention to avoid non essential contact and work from home

HasaDigaEebowai · 16/03/2020 16:56

fuck

wheresmymojo · 16/03/2020 16:56

From tomorrow no support of mass gatherings by emergency services (didn't actually say banned though or what counts as mass)

wheresmymojo · 16/03/2020 16:57

IMO all a bit vague at the moment ('should' etc).

Hoping someone else gives more specific advice.

Whatthefoxgoingon · 16/03/2020 16:59

I didn’t hear a single thing about how they are going to enforce any of those measures!

wheresmymojo · 16/03/2020 17:03

Patrick Vallance

  • Whole household isolation where one person with cough or fever for 14 days
  • Increased social distancing: where businesses and individuals can do so should work from home
  • Avoiding gatherings is important irrespective of size

So again, not said they are doing anything (closing bars, clubs, etc) just "should avoid". Many won't IMO.

  • School closures may be necessary but not at this time
