Something that may help your cooking plan. I've batch cooked veggie curries with tinned potatoes to test them. Better than using fresh. Seriously. I was so surprised :)

BlackeyedSusan · 22/02/2020 08:09

Thanks. I have one tin that I was going to use in curry to test... Just not round to it. Was going to try it with tinned carrots, peas, tomatoes and chick peas. ( As theses are cheapest)

Someone we know who sells garden furniture has had containers reduced from 15 to 4 so supplies from China are being affected and small businesses who haven’t the resources to find new suppliers.

Orangecake123 · 22/02/2020 17:39

What does the Huel powder taste like?

I've bought a ready made drink by another brand and the taste wasn't brilliant.

TreesSandSea · 22/02/2020 18:56

Absolutely foul! After you’ve had it 5 or 6 times it’s better, but it is proper healthy, made of crushed pulses and the like and it has no sugar in. Texture is also pretty gross. I feel great on it though!

It would be a last resort for sure!

ifonly4 · 22/02/2020 20:07

I've bought many of the above, also orange, cranberry and apple juice and tins of grapefruit. Partly for extra bit c, also had pneumonia twice and all I fancied at the time was juices and fruit.

BlackeyedSusan · 22/02/2020 20:15

Thanks that is helpful. Just open and pour...

Snowdropsdelight · 23/02/2020 11:47

complan is excellent idea.

I'd like to add those fizzy vit c and zinc tablets.

PatriciaBateman · 23/02/2020 12:07

For anyone with small children especially - an oral syringe and sachets/dissolvable tablets for making rehydration/electrolyte drink.

Getting kids to drink when unwell can be the most challenging/dangerous part, and you need a lot more fluid when you're running a fever.

IvyBush123 · 24/02/2020 22:57

Thanks for sharing everybody.

I also bought some seedlings to grow sprouted seeds. They provide you with vitamins.

OP posts:
BlackeyedSusan · 24/02/2020 23:16

I have ice pops for getting sick kids to drink, and jelly, ( lots of liquid) and lemonade.

Mine would not drink rehydration sachets so need other solutions to.the problem required. ( Autism)

BlackeyedSusan · 25/02/2020 10:14

@Dennisreynoldsduster

I use the 20p carrots in most supermarkets. They are soft and ok when added to stuff, like stir in sauce or curry sauces etc. Also garden peas, which are not green like frozen but also go in sauces. Tinned sweetcorn also tastes different to frozen.

PancakeFiend · 25/02/2020 20:13

Oh god, there was I thinking I was organised but my stash is teeny tiny compared to these.
I’ve got
four boxes of cereal
six cartons of uht milk
8 tins of baked beans
4 tins spaghetti hoops
1 tin macaroni cheese
X4 tin tomato soup
X4 tin carrot and coriander soup
X4 tin vegetable soup
A few of the packet soups (add water)
2 pot noodles
X3 packs of meringues
X5 tins fruit
X2 packs of pasta
X7 packs of microwave rice
X1 bag of rice
X3 jars of curry
X2 packs Noodles
X5 tins mushy peas
Tin of sweet corn
X4 jars pasta sauce
Lots of biscuits
X2 bags of multipack crisps
X2 pack Crackers
X2 packs Bread sticks
1 pack rice cakes
Peanut butter jar
Nutella jar
Really need to top the freezer up. I’ve got cheese and bread in there and various bits and pieces but nothing to really put together a decent dinner. Going to try and do an online shop tomorrow.
Medicine cabinet just usual cold and flu stuff plus dioralyte as it’s can cause diarrhoea i believe.
Looking at that list it’s a bit rubbish. No meals.

BlackeyedSusan · 26/02/2020 09:28

@PancakeFiend I suggest tinned veg to go with the pasta sauces and pasta. Maybe carrots or peas as they are quite cheap. Or more sweetcorn as you have got some already. Also what are you doing for protein? Add some chickpeas or kidney beans (about 30-35p if you get the cheapest)these can be added to curry. Do you like any tinned meats that can be added to pasta sauce? Or pulses?

You have a decent number of lunches.

Maybe add some dried fruit smaller. Portion size for one portion. And jelly to make up later. Good for sick kids.

That list is bigger than mine when I started for Brexit. You probably have more stuff in the cupboard that you are not thinking of as part of the preps too.

Funkycats · 26/02/2020 12:34

Can I recommend looking at Jack Monroe's book 'Tin Can Cook'? I bought it recently and it's full of great recipes that basically make many tinned foods quite palatable. It's really worth stocking up on herbs, spices and sauces too, for if all the beans/pasta/rice dishes start to get boring!

Ijustneed · 26/02/2020 12:47

I've just been thinking about this ..

What's the bare minimum you would have in, in case of self isolation or the shops running low?

Are we likely to lose fresh water supplies?

I'm on a low budget and don't have a lot of space in the freezer or cupboards.

PancakeFiend · 26/02/2020 13:41

Thanks @BlackeyedSusan that’s really helpful. I’m vegetarian plus one of my dc, other dc and dh eat meat. Two out of four of us are coeliac. Complicated things a bit. But tinned veg in curries/pasta, dried fruit etc are a really good shout, thank you. I’ve got some quorn and meat in the freezer for protein, need to get a bit more. We all chickpeas so will grab some of those.
I read a good idea on another thread about getting those purée pots of baby food as they have long shelf lives. Going to pick some up tomorrow.
Another idea in the other thread (it’s the general prepping thread) was ice pops to store in the cupboard, then put in freezer when needed. Could be good especially when sick.
Ooh and another one I thought of was meringues with tinned fruit.

PancakeFiend · 26/02/2020 13:42

I meant to say the purée fruit pots. Things like apple. I’ve eaten them as an adult 🙈 and they’re very tasty!
