Prepping for a pandemic 2

Second thread on prepping for a potential Coronavirus pandemic...following the latest news and information as well as prepping info.

When quoting estimates like mortality rates, replication rates, incubation periods and similar I try to stick to evidence based, scientific studies and will link to sources (unless already linked to them previously).

Generally speaking I use reputable sources of information like well regarded news outlets for other information and will provide links.

Sometimes I may post things outside of this as 'interesting' or such like. I will always caveat these as to be taken with caution.

As much as possible I am attempting not to link to fake news. It's an evolving picture so may not be 100% successful but if something is later shown to be incorrect I will post a correction.

I forgot to order Dreamies, so I'll need to get some of those on the weekend before I run out or they'll hate me.

They’re cats. It’s their job to hold us in a certain level of contempt. 😁

T0tallyFuckedUpFamily · 05/02/2020 18:56

Destiny, have you a porch or windowsill you could grown it on. It does very well indoors. There are all sorts of things people try, such as crushed eggshells, copper wire, etc, but they have limited success. The only thing that really helps is scattering a few slug pellets a few inches away from the spinach. Works better if it’s in a pot.

@Dyrne that tutorial made me laugh.
And I agree -I was trying to lighten things up too, and my sense of humour does not always come across as well as it sounds in my head Blush

Curry: tinned tomatoes, tinned chick peas, tinned carrots, tinned peas, cumin, dried coriander, turmeric, chilli powder, serve with rice or add tinned potatoes.

Stir in sauce, add tinned carrots, peas, sweetcorn or any other tinned veg.

Bolognaise : tinned lentils/ dried red lentils, tinned tomatoes, tinned mushrooms, onions from fridge/ freezer or dried, dried herbs or jars of sauce.

You can use tins of curry and add tinned veg. Or jars of sauce.

Chilli: tinned or dried lentils, tinned tomatoes, tinned kidney beans. Chilli powder.

GorkyMcPorky · 05/02/2020 19:34

Um, beans on toast? Grin DH will be baking.

ishouldhavestucktocats · 05/02/2020 19:36

I wonder if having coronavirus and recovering from it gives a person immunity from catching it again? I have read nothing about this in the media. Does anyone know?

Destinysdaughter · 05/02/2020 19:49

Well this is a rather dispiriting article about how some of the victims of the virus are being treated in China...

@handsoffisback

wellididntseethatcoming Why would an alternative be to house patients at a military base? Are soldiers and military staff expendable? Do they matter less?

No of course they are not expendable. What a silly thing to say. I was thinking more along the lines of
•it being a secure place that might be easier to isolate
•they could potentially be monitored by military medics thus not people having to mix with civilians in the event they were unwell (of course under the guidance of nhs specialists but with them kept at a distance)
•the nature of military staff is that they are often used to travelling. So it would have made sense to have cleared out digs of staff that were already away at the moment and housed them there temporarily.

wellididntseethatcoming · 05/02/2020 19:54

Also regarding the Facebook post. I've blocked out the name but it was shared publicly with a name included and it's backed up by other members of staff.

Bookofjudith · 05/02/2020 19:55

I spent today batch cooking easy defrost meals incase we become unwell (or need to drop them off for family or friends).

Watching CGTN is quite worrying Eric Ding (Harvard School of Public Health) suggesting 25% of those affected in Wuhan require intensive care treatment. Which is shocking.

wellididntseethatcoming · 05/02/2020 20:02

I also watched this video for anybody that's interested the other night. It's 45 minutes long but it's well worth making a brew and watching right until the end. It explains why people are passing out amongst other things.

T0tallyFuckedUpFamily I am partial to this option - very edgy and only a mere $248! Grin Actually, I do spend a massive amount of time on Pinterest for prepping browsing. I think it was someone on here suggested “LDS preparedness” was a good search term, and it really does help weed out the macho gun lovers - lots of good ideas for what to remember for children etc.

GorkyMcPorky Probably very outing to those that know me, but: spaghetti and baked beans. Trust me, it sustained me through 3 years of hangovers at uni - don’t judge me until you’ve tried it and agree how amazing it is Grin

Our lovely neighbours have just offered us a 3 year old tall fridge freezer! We only have a small one at the moment with very limited freezer space. Now I'll be able to fill the 'new' freezer with frozen veg, berries, meats, batch cooked meals, part baked bread etc! Ridiculously excited by this as have mostly prepped with dried food and tins. So we can eat the frozen foods first and then if necessary before moving on to tins and dried stuff. Will be doing some batch cooking this weekend!

ofwarren · 05/02/2020 20:14

@ishouldhavestucktocats you can be reinfected

T0tallyFuckedUpFamily · 05/02/2020 20:15

Hmm. I’m a menopausal woman. I don’t think I’d last long in that. You’d find me collapsed in a heap of sweat and I’d be scooped of the floor straight to quarantine. 🥵

Not saying this was in any way inspired by your pic @Dyrne Wink but if all the surgical face masks sell out, perhaps gimp masks may be a suitable alternative? Easy to wipe clean with your Milton too.

T0tallyFuckedUpFamily · 05/02/2020 20:26

If that does turn out to be the case, that’s actually quite terrifying, ofwarren. Does that mean that people who have healed can catch it off other people who are sick or can it just start up again?

WeBuiltCisCityOnSexistRoles · 05/02/2020 20:28

Apologies if I am being too light hearted by the way Blush I do appreciate how scary the situation is.

(Worryingly I do actually think a gimp style mask may be a good idea, clearly am spending far too much time here...)

T0tallyFuckedUpFamily · 05/02/2020 20:29

We need humour at times.

Legoandloldolls · 05/02/2020 20:36

Any one stocking up should check they have a thermometer and fresh batteries for it. Got caught out late one night and had to look for a late night pharmacy. I went round the local shops and stocked on painkillers incase they start selling out and I get a migraine.
