Preppers

Prep board very quiet considering

I thought the prep topics would be a lot busier considering what is happening and the uncertainty of each day.
I thought more people would be on here posting ,or are people staying silent about prepping do you think?

People are too busy prepping to post? Wink

bellinisurge · 15/03/2019 13:52

I would imagine that most preppers are already settled in with their plans. Anyone starting now from scratch is into panic buying. Which isn't the same as prepping.
Hope people are lurking and if they have questions here is a good forum.

FedUpOfBrexit · 15/03/2019 13:54

With news reports stating more and more people are 'stockpiling' (not prepping) I thought there would be more posts.
I do hope people have prepared as best they can and are just keeping quiet rather than hardly anyone has prepared

Agree. I'm as set as I can be. Still a bit concerned about water but not panicking. Just gently prepped really 😊

bellinisurge · 15/03/2019 14:01

Well, as a general prepper, I'm as ready as I can be for a range of likely things of which problems with Brexit are just one likely thing. I keep my eyes open for new things I might need to address or whether I need to change judgement calls I have made about what I don't need to do. Or what I can't do.

Snugglepumpkin · 15/03/2019 15:10

The thing about prepping is that everyone has their own target in mind, whether that is a 2 week supply of food or a 2 year off grid completely self sufficient set up & eventually you achieve it.
Once you have done that, there isn't so much to talk about.

Realistically a lot of the posts in the past year have been by people who are only prepping for up to a month of supplies in case of Brexit which is a task you can easily achieve in one day (finances permitting)
Once you have your cupboard of beans, there is not much left to say about it & you just get on with the rest of your life.

Longer term preppers include a vast amount of learning skills & sourcing the materials to use them in their preps which takes years & gives them something to post about but also tend to keep information to themselves so are less likely to tell you they've built a forge or whatever they are up to now.

Of course I am happy to share all my adventures in dehydration whether people like it or not GrinBut that's not a Brexit thing.

BlackeyedGruesome · 15/03/2019 16:45

yep, someone on here not too far away is really into dehydrating. Oh yes.

if you hang around for a while you get twitchy and it catches and you start to look up dehydraters... beware!

BlackeyedGruesome · 15/03/2019 16:48

It was busier on here at the end of last year and the beginning of this year, when people were planning ahead.

a lot of brexit preps have moved over to the brexit board where the talk is of the last few items mainly and speculating when we can start eating it. or how to stop eating the treat stash

bellinisurge · 15/03/2019 17:34

@BlackeyedGruesome GrinGrinGrin

ArmchairTraveller · 15/03/2019 17:53

I’d be surprised if there was a lot of traffic now, Preppers are prepped.
I’ve just got my fresh goods list of bits and bobs done, veg and the like, but we’re as ready as we can be.
I’m now planning my veg beds and my mushroom farm...

ElyElyOy · 15/03/2019 19:38

I’m a general low-level prepper and to be honest I don’t post as much because it’s all been so Brexit focussed for so long. Not that that’s a criticism, I understand why, but I don’t stockpile or prep for Brexit, so it’s not really a conversation I can engage in.

I will be glad when Brexit is done with and we can get back to discussing what’s in season for foraging etc Grin

bellinisurge · 15/03/2019 19:42

@ElyElyOy - sounds like you are our go to foraging person. Do you have the Food For Free book? - Collins, I think.

BlackeyedGruesome · 15/03/2019 19:44

That would be really interesting Ely.

ElyElyOy · 15/03/2019 21:12

Had one from the library but it was a bit full on and not very user friendly, on so hoping to go on an actual course: I’m more in to the natural medicinal purposes side of it, but I find it all really interesting. Plus I really need a course that skins over mushrooms, they are the work of the Devil Angry

TheFlis12345 · 15/03/2019 21:18

Tonight’s Food Unwrapped on 4 was apparently about the impact Brexit will have on food production and availability in the UK. I have not watched it yet but it will be interesting to see what they say and if it has any influence on the wider population and their prepping.

BlackeyedGruesome · 16/03/2019 01:10

Thanks. I shall see if I can watch that.

AwdBovril · 16/03/2019 01:30

I defrosted my freezer this week & reorganised it... lot more space now it's not blocked up with ice & crap we won't use. I'm buying my last bits - shortest dated stuff, etc. Cheese, butter etc to freeze. Seeds. Getting my garden sorted (trying to, anyway). Bought "Food For Free". Picked up a book on vegetable gardening. Organising my stash so things I'll want most frequently are easily accessible. Putting things in sensible places, e.g. one room is a lot cooler than the rest of the house, so chocolate, seeds & beans for sprouting, milk powder, & nuts have been put there & a cupboard reorganised to fit them in.

I must watch that Food Unwrapped programme.

ArmchairTraveller · 16/03/2019 08:19

Please consider wildlife when foraging, people gathering ‘food for free’ can deprive a lot of animals of vital supplies and devastate habitats.
Better to grow your own.

bellinisurge · 16/03/2019 08:30

You are quite right @ArmchairTraveller . My interest in foraging is generally satisfied in high summer collecting berries for jam/syrup. However, if I "needed" to - a general prepper notion - I'm afraid my needs supersede anyone else's. Including wildlife. I certainly have a fear of mushrooms although I have a friend who forages for them.
This is not a Brexit thing, btw.
And even further btw, I wonder how long it will be before we have to stop saying "This is not a Brexit thing " in case we give non-general Preppers an attack of the vapours Grin.
I can see the headlines "Mumsnet says Brexit means we all start eating nettles". FFS.

ArmchairTraveller · 16/03/2019 08:44

I suppose it might ‘reduce the surplus population’ if people start indiscriminate foraging. Not just fungi, we have a lot of hemlock round here that looks very like wild carrots, and that’s just for starters!

ArmchairTraveller · 16/03/2019 08:48

Nettles are both tasty and nutritious. Plus you can weave the stems to make useful storage baskets. That’s the archaeologist in me. 🍵

bellinisurge · 16/03/2019 08:56

I use nettles for chop and drop mulch for my veggies. Interesting about making baskets - us preppers love our cordage.Smile

ArmchairTraveller · 16/03/2019 09:12

Making cordage Is an undervalued skill. I teach it in Forest school and archaeological activities.

bellinisurge · 16/03/2019 09:18

Any chance you can provide a link to using nettles for basket weaving. I would love to try this.
