My family are veggie. I'm going to Waitrose tomorrow. I have £50 to get my food cupboard and freezer stocked with long life items. What should I buy?

I'm not really a pepper but I think that dried beans and pulses are probably a good source of protein because they don't take much space and keep for a long time. Peanut butter too. And a jar of marmite which will provide you with b vitamins to last for the next ten years Grin

ElyElyOy · 14/01/2019 21:28

Pasta, pulses, rice, grains, UHT plant milk, tinned beans (baked, kidney, etc), oats, tinned soup. Tinned fish if you eat it. Vegan egg alternative: last ages. Flour/yeast if you want to make your own bread: part cooked baguettes if you don’t. Dry cake mix if you want a treat! Crisps, sweets, choccies, orange juice. Basic toiletries and cleaning stuff (toilet rolls etc).

PerverseConverse · 14/01/2019 21:56

I've read that tofu and butter can be frozen so that's good news. We aren't fans of beans but do like lentils. I only ever use red lentils for soup so need to try other types and recipes.

I personally think vegetarians and vegans are in a better position to imagine creativity in their diet and what to buy and store.
I am neither but have been checking out veggie and vegan recipes to see what shelf stable ideas I can get for protein in the alternative to meat.

Huggybear16 · 15/01/2019 12:19

I bought long life whole milk and long life Alpro soya (the growing up drink one, for my toddler) yesterday that has a September expiry.

I also got tins of Ambrosia (custard, chocolate custard, rice pudding) on offer with a mid 2020 expiry.

I'd miss desserts in a food shortage situation, so a tin of chocolate flavour custard would be most welcome.

AvocadosBeforeMortgages · 15/01/2019 13:16

If you've only got £50, why are you going to Waitrose?

newcupcake · 15/01/2019 13:49

It makes me smile how so many people on here think that £50 of food is going to be of much help in this predicted 'food shortage' Hmm

PerverseConverse · 15/01/2019 13:52

That's what I have this week and I have an £8voucher for Waitrose but thank you for the judgement.

OP posts:
bellinisurge · 15/01/2019 14:26

I actually went to Waitrose today - only supermarket near where I work. It was clearly putting its shelf stable products to the fore, offering discounts (from what original price is the question but, hey ho) and generally accepting that people would be shopping for their home stash.
I've seen no other supermarket really do that. The odd bulk buy section that wasn't normally there but nothing so blatant.

PerverseConverse · 15/01/2019 14:44

@bellinisurge my Waitrose was the same. I shop there, Tesco, and Asda, and compare prices in all. I don't drive so go to either there or Waitrose with my mum so her choices are relevant too as to where we go. Asda is within walking distance and I buy certain things there as cheaper but they don't sell the tofu, toilet roll or bagels I use. They don't send me vouchers either.
Today I wanted to stock my cupboard full of essential things like pasta, rice, tinned fruit; and stock the freezer with frozen veg.
Next time I go shopping it will be to Tesco and I'll stock up on other things from there.

Waitrose is quiet and stress free and had exactly what I wanted today for a good price and then I had the voucher too.

Some sneaky bargains in Waitrose at the best of times.

Thanks very much @wejammin

Huggybear16 · 15/01/2019 15:58

Doesn't take much to make you smile, does it? @newcupcake

You must piss your pants when something mildly amusing actually happens.

Primarystress · 15/01/2019 20:12

Surely every little helps. Good on you op. Dried packet soya mince is pretty useful.

Huggybear16 · 15/01/2019 21:39

Surely every little helps

It does. £50 to spend on food preps is not to be sniffed at - I bet the OP got loads of long life/shelf stable things today.

What did you get @PerverseConverse?

Ignore the Hmm comments. OP was asking a prepper related question on the prepper board. If you're not interested then just jog on.

PerverseConverse · 15/01/2019 22:36

Thanks @Huggybear16 Smile
I'd already got a few things like extra hot chocolate, custard powder, shit loads of tea and lentils but today have bought:

Frozen broccoli
Frozen peas
Frozen spinach
Frozen seeetcorn
Tinned pineapple
Tinned mango
Tinned cherries
Coconut milk
Big bag of rice
Big pack of spaghetti
Bag of macaroni
Bag of penne
Tofu (can be frozen)
Butter (also to freeze)
Long life milk (semi and skimmed)
Big bag of sugar
Bagels for the freezer
Porridge oats
Freezer bags
Bread (one white, one multigrain/seed) for the freezer
Chopped tomatoes x4
Garlic paste

I also bought bagels for eating now, fresh veg for making soup (had for dinner and the rest I will freeze), crisps, jam, hot cross buns, soap, kitchen towel.

I spent just over my budget but feel happy that my freezer is pretty full now as had stuff in already, and my cupboard (I only have one good cupboard as it's a small kitchen of a shit design) is full of ingredients to make things.

I have a fussy eater but hoping by engaging her in cooking she'll eat more variety. First stop is making lentil dahl. The oldest and youngest will try anything. Middle Miss is a pita when it comes to new food but I've told her brexit might mean less choices and she really does have to eat what she's given now Grin

If you're near any health food shops that stock Suma - Sausage Mix I highly recommend it!

It's a dry mix you add water too, leave to soak for a few minutes then shape & shallow fry in oil. We do burgers, sausages or dinner balls & it's lovely stuff!

Nut roast mixes are great too.

Vegan pate like tartex is lovely - comes in a tube normally.

Also cream crackers are great especially if bread is hard to get.

PerverseConverse · 15/01/2019 22:48

Oooh tartex! Had some over Christmas and lived on it after having each of my children. Think I had it on toast for every meal! I'll stock up on that next week when I have some more money and will look out for the sausage mix too, thanks.

I'm glad I stocked up today considering the result of the vote tonight. I expect the shops will be busy over the next few days. I got my mum to fill up on fuel today too as said the price might rocket after tonight.

You can get shelf stable pouches of ready to eat puy lentils. Definitely worth having some in for a veggie/vegan protien source that can be eaten cold from the packet if necessary.

PositivelyPERF · 16/01/2019 02:25

I’ve been wondering about a dehydration machine for a while but after today, I’m definitely getting one. I’m going to be dehydrating leeks, carrots, etc, so I can make soups, stews, pies, etc. It will always come in handy anyway.

Huggybear16 · 16/01/2019 05:56

That's fab OP, especially if it makes you feel better. Having full cupboards at home is a way for me to feel a little less anxious when there's bad weather forecasts, unnerving news (on the telly or work related) or even when I feel I'm getting a sickness bug or something. Prepping can go a long way to managing anxiety for some and this shouldn't be underestimated!

WhenLifeGivesYouLemonsx · 16/01/2019 06:14

Aldi and Lidl have lots of veggie friendly items and you can get far more for £50

PerverseConverse · 16/01/2019 07:26

Aldi is my idea of hell. Never been in a Lidl.
