My family are veggie. I'm going to Waitrose tomorrow. I have £50 to get my food cupboard and freezer stocked with long life items. What should I buy?

@PerverseConverse I thought that until I lost my job. It's generally hugely cheaper and a lot less grim than it was when I was struggling to find work.

I'm a single SAHM on not a lot of money and have honed my shopping skills over the years to make the best of deals and to shop around. Asda locally for things like crisps, quorn products, and vimto. Co-op for bread. Tesco for big shops, Waitrose for things I can't get elsewhere and medium shops. Tesco clubcard points have bought my family railcards, train tickets, and admission to attractions. Waitrose keeps sending me £8 off of I spend £40. I'm buying their essentials brand mainly when I go apart from branded veggie/vegan stuff which are treats really.

I have bought tinned chick peas, tahini and bottled lemon juice as it’s easy to make hommous.

Don't knock Lidl and Aldi until you've tried them...

PerverseConverse · 16/01/2019 15:35

I've tried Aldi. No Lidl nearby.

Thought my every little helps comment may have come across as a bit patronising op, sorry. 50 quid is actually a decent spend imo. Anyway, just to add, laughing cow spread currently has a May use by date.

PerverseConverse · 16/01/2019 22:45

@Primarystress I didn't take it as patronising, don't worry. Every little does help as Tesco has been telling us for years Grin
I've also remembered I've got a homemade chocolate fudge cake in the freezer. Must get a stash of chocolate to make some ganache to pour over it when we need cheering up. Or it might be our Easter cake (must stockpile mini eggs. Not because of brexit but because they are always sold out by the time I want to decorate my Easter cake. And because my children love them).

Are there no Home Bargains or B&Ms near you? They are incredibly cheap.

Primarystress · 17/01/2019 00:06

:-)

Aldi sell cheap wholemeal pasta, both spaghetti and fusilli. I got spaghetti as the packs are smaller for weight and I can get more in the cupboard.

Went to B&M today & got 6 tins of coconut milk for 50p each, 4 boxes of Mayflower curry sauce for £1 each & 20 individually wrapped flapjacks for 19p each. All vegan & a real bargain in my opinion.

I've already got tins of butter beans, tins of potatoes, frozen onions & spinach so that's at least 6 meals of curry (have a huge sack of basmati rice) for 2 adults & 3 children.

Will be heading back there on payday when I have more time & money Smile

P.S The curry sauce is a dry mix you add to water. I can get 6 - 8 curries out of 1 box.
