Just to get people started, freak out your family by asking for these:
Fire starter, life straw, sprouting jar and seeds (inspired by another thread) ... any more?

A mangle.
A good, big, old-fashioned mangle. That's what I yearn after.
Used one once. Really got the water out of clothes, and this is the strenuous bit of hand washing. The wringing .

bellinisurge · 25/08/2018 07:54

@Permaexhaustion I also keep my eyes open for a mangle. I imagine you can buy "vintage" ones for garden decoration or one to restoreConfused.

Ooh speaking of laundry, this popped up on my Pinterest this morning:

www.yirego.com/

A foot operated washing machine!

At $300 it’s definitely one for the “if I ever win the lottery” list Grin

My aunt has an old mangle. She uses it as a side table in her sitting room. It's beautiful.

I asked DH for a Kelly Kettle for last Christmas - he laughed (and got me a Dyson hairdryer - lovely, and fast - but I had a good powerful one already!).

So I bought it myself. I think the 1.6l version.

I had it in time for the snow, and DD, her BFF and I made maple syrup taffy on a fire of tiny sticks in the snow which was great fun.

And I cooked my dinner on it another night over summer when DH and DD were away (so I could have a play!). It heated the water very quickly and the pot on top of the spout also cooked away merrily with just a handful of sticks.

And as DM's washing machine was known to break down, I am well used to washing clothes in the bath (I'm eldest of 6 DCs, and she used cloth nappies!), and squeezing them out well. A decent rolling pin over a clean wooden board/plank/concrete path would probably work reasonably well as an alternative mangle, in an emergency.

I'm slowly building up some prepping bits - usually calling them "camping equipment" as DH doesn't camp anymore and they can be useful for those too. I got a "solar shower" last year, which is fine in summer. I need a better solar charger (I got one in Lidl which was great in the really bright hot sun of June's heatwave, but not so great in regular weather here). And I think I'd like a dehydrator (I don't have room for a chest freezer so can't do more batch cooking or freezing of produce than I already do).

I want a Faraday cage.

Wilhemenawonka · 21/09/2018 17:06

Oooo there are lots of pretty on this thread. I'm not a prepper (mainly due to space, cost and general laziness) but do love camping.
The washing machine on the last page, the pressure canner and the Kelly kettle are now on my birthday list

Does anyone have this book? [[https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/0099575833/ref=ox_sc_act_title_1?smid=A3P5ROKL5A1OLE&psc=1
The Knowledge: How To Rebuild Our World After An Apocalypse - Lewis Dartnell]]?

Not that I'm expecting TEOTWAWKI, but I thought it might make a good stocking filler, and be interesting as a sort of "how does it work" science/technology curiosity book!

bellinisurge · 14/10/2018 15:20

Interesting suggestions @PreppaPig . Like you I don't expect The End Of The World As We Know It. But how stuff works fascinates me.

I have that book. Its very good.

AwdBovril · 28/10/2018 10:38

On the subject of Kelly Kettles, has anyone any experience of a Ghillie Kettle? They seem to be pretty similar, but the GK are apparently slightly thicker metal, & British made (as opposed to China). I try to support local business as much as possible. I'm thinking of getting the anodized kit & buying a hobo stove separately... maybe. It would be good for camping in any case, gas canisters are expensive.

bellinisurge · 28/10/2018 12:11

Rings a tiny bell. Will now take a look. Nice one.

Preppa we have that book (bought years ago, long before the B*** referendum) and it's very interesting.

AwdBovril · 29/10/2018 18:02

I've ordered the Ghillie Kettle... I'll let you know how it goes!

bellinisurge · 29/10/2018 18:08

Sounds cool @AwdBovril - make sure you tell us .

Oh, I was planning a Kelly Kettle for dh Christmas present, but think will go for Gillis instead if UK manufactured! Thanks

AwdBovril · 01/11/2018 23:19

The Ghillie arrived yesterday, so pretty good delivery time. (I never pay for delivery if I can get it for free.) Looks ok so far but I've not tried it yet - I plan to this weekend. Am considering getting the Hobo Stove addition as well.

I’m after a greenhouse. Being able to grow more tender plants will really help to increase what we produce at home

Urbanbeetler · 11/11/2018 20:21

Have you seen these? (I’m not on this board much so apologies if it’s been covered).

This is what I would like:

www.wonderbagworld.com/

Especially if fuel prices go up at some point, which is not impossible.

bellinisurge · 11/11/2018 20:32

I have one. I think you can achieve the same sort of result with an old duvet/cushions. But not as neat looking.

I have another thread on this but to be honest, my home made hayboxes haven’t been fabulous but I’m still experimenting.
