Just to get people started, freak out your family by asking for these:
Fire starter, life straw, sprouting jar and seeds (inspired by another thread) ... any more?

I get that the boards are public and that everyone may read them and have a giggle if they like, @Plimmy. What I don't get is the need to actively mock people. Why not just read, have a chuckle and move on?

I'm slowly getting into prepping from a purely practical point of view and not because I think the world will end. I generally like to be organised and prepared for whatever life may throw at me as best I can, whether it be weather related incidents, temporary loss of water or power, or whatever. I have home insurance for the same reason. Also prepping, in my view, goes great with a bit of frugality, so I'm filling my larder when things are on offer, getting into camping as a way to have cheaper family holidays, etc. What's so wrong about that? Confused

gamerchick · 08/08/2018 23:08

It does get tiresome having to address the same comments on every single thread though

Indeed!

Although I wouldn't liken it to baby names, I'm thinking it's more 'laughing into the darkness' then anything else Wink

@IAmInsignificunt, search for drops knitting patterns & you should find

www.garnstudio.com/home.php?cid=19

About 8000 knitting & crochet patterns for every conceivable thing you could ever want to knit, all free.

Drops wool is often on special offer at Wool Warehouse for very good prices & if you search there is ALWAYS a code for discounts there.

GoneWishing · 08/08/2018 23:17

We're luckily sorted on the woolly crafts department! My brother's wife's mother seems to be a very prolific knitter. I don't really know her very well (only met in brother's children's birthdays and the like), but she has sent has a huge amount of woolly sock over the years! I'm not a great a knitter, but a crochet a lot. We have crocheted blankets coming out of our ears, really! I've been gradually inflicting them on DH's family, recently...

GoneWishing · 08/08/2018 23:18

Christ. Insert grammar above. I've had way too much wine at friends' tonight!

AnotherShirtRuined · 08/08/2018 23:19

I, too, have gotten into crocheting and am midway through my first blanket. It's an excellent prepping skill Grin

Snugglepumpkin

Thank you so much!

bellinisurge · 09/08/2018 06:52

@GoneWishing - another one with crochet blankets coming out of her ears!!!! Find it relaxing.

There's www.ravelry.com too. Loads of free patterns and advanced search facilities. Worldwide site with excellent advice in the forums for both knitting and crochet.

bellinisurge · 11/08/2018 15:18

Thank you @TooManyPaws !!

AnotherShirtRuined · 11/08/2018 15:54

Thanks for the Ravelry link! It's something of a rabbit hole, though... Grin

TooManyPaws · 12/08/2018 02:10

Hehehe. Those of you who crochet blankets, I presume that you've come across www.attic24.typepad.com ? 😁

bellinisurge · 12/08/2018 07:02

I haven't @TooManyPaws . Another Thank you.

I have been asking for a Kelly kettle and other basics for Christmas for years! People think I'm joking and they give me cheap socks and ugly mugs instead Angry

AndhowcouldIeverrefuse · 12/08/2018 22:29

What I don't get is the need to actively mock people.
This has happened from the beginning of the board and before, when we were lobbying MN to create a preppers board. I didn't care then and I don't care now Smile

ElyElyOy · 17/08/2018 21:44

In a fantasy land it would be a multi-fuel burner: but in reality I’m probably going to ask for a fire-pit BBQ thing for the garden.

My husband is not supportive of the prepping so I have to do it secretly Wink

AnotherShirtRuined · 17/08/2018 21:54

Me too, @ElyElyOy. I just say it's for camping, which we are both getting into, so that helps Grin

ElyElyOy · 17/08/2018 22:37

I can’t use the camping excuse: everyone knows I would rather stab myself in the eye than sleep in a tent Grin

RaininSummer · 17/08/2018 23:14

I am well sorted for crochet blankets and tinned tomatoes but really want a kelly kettle as they are so cool. My partner has this very minute informed me that a shop aimed at campers and preppers has just opened.in our town. Will be interesting to see what they have in store.

ziggiestardust · 20/08/2018 14:02

Another one after a pressure canner here! The mason jars are so expensive though...

bellinisurge · 20/08/2018 16:06

Lucky Vitamin sell them online and, assuming you are going for a balance of tinned, frozen, dehydrated and "canned" (as in, stored in a mason jar using pressure canning or water bath canning), it's not too pricey. Cheaper than kilner, anyway.

KimChhesePickle - rocket stoves are really easy to make ( no specialist equipment or skills required). I made one from a 5 litre mini keg and some cat litter a couple of years ago.

AnotherShirtRuined · 24/08/2018 08:16

That's interesting @Permaexhaustion. Eons ago I bought an old-fashioned washboard at a fleamarket for decorative purposes. I have since come to realise its usefulness should I ever find myself without access to a washing machine (such as no clean clothes and no power for the foreseeable future).
