Hi all, I’ve been slowly amassing a stockpile based on what we use and when there’s an offer on, I’ll buy 2 or 3 of said item and store the rest.
Can you please critique what I have, and give me areas for improvement? Also; if I’m missing a vital category, please tell me! We’ve been using our garage and storing in large plastic bins so far, it actually hasn’t taken up any room, it doesn’t look like much compared to what some people on this board have! Obviously I have at least 2 weeks worth of food in at any one time; my freezer & cupboards are always full because we are very fortunate. So obviously this list doesn’t include freezer stuff.

pineapple is our family favourite. I do big batches (and then eat too much and burn my mouth).

bellinisurge · 24/07/2018 12:35

How appetising does that look?ConfusedHmmGrin

Critique my stockpile please
cloudtree · 24/07/2018 13:26

yes but just imagine it redhydrated in a bolognese sauce when beef has tripled in price.

Let me know if you die Wink

bellinisurge · 24/07/2018 13:27

I promise I will @cloudtree .

bellinisurge · 24/07/2018 13:33

Here it is in all its vacuum sealed glory . Wrapped in baking parchment first and an oxygen absorber and moisture absorber added.

Critique my stockpile please

Are you actually me Bellini? We even have the same worktop and chopping board.

Was that a whole pack of turkey mince or just part?

ziggiestardust · 24/07/2018 14:12

catsofa these are the lantern/powerbanks, then I just typed in on amazon ‘throw with usb charger’ and got the first one I saw. They’re used for cars usually I think, but they heat up nicely and they’re good for an emergency like a boiler breaking down or a power outage. Don’t forget hot water bottles for everyone too!

OP posts:
bellinisurge · 24/07/2018 14:13

A whole 500g pack.
If am you and you are me .... there's a Beatles song in there somewhere!

bellinisurge · 24/07/2018 14:13

Hot water bottles are brilliant!

catsofa · 25/07/2018 01:23

Thanks that looks great, I might invest in one!

nuttynutjob · 25/07/2018 07:06

Rubbish/nappy bags: that way if the bins don’t get collected you can double bag the smelly rubbish and pile up the dry rubbish in larger bags. Our bin didn’t get collected for a month (in this heat wave!) and using that system I had no flies/maggots/smells :)

LuluJakey1 · 28/07/2018 19:40

I am really surprised by some of this and the suggestions.
Why would our rubbish not be collected?
Why would we be making sure we buy tins that have ring pulls or buying extra tin openers?
One of the biggest manufaturers and global distributors of paracetemol is in England. Why are people saying to buy paracetemol?
We produce most of the cat litter we use - am sure we can produce more if needed.
We export 50% of our food production to the EU.
The EU is not the world- we can buy from America, Australia, China, Japan, South America etc.

Some of this is just panic and scaremongering. It is sensible nearer the time to stockpile some items you know you need - and the government will make sure they do so with particular medications- that are only produced in the EU if it looks like there will be no deal but we really must not fall for the panic and scaremongering.

bellinisurge · 28/07/2018 19:47

Have you seen the threads on here when the rubbish isn't collected? Only takes a day or two delay and people start yelling.
And I assume all the rubbish collectors are not hugely well paid and need to feed their families and get to work. Which is ok if they haven't got to juggle getting food in and there are no petrol supply blips.
As I have said lots of times on this and other threads, there may be resolvable hiccups rather than catastrophes but wouldn't you rather avoid them too?

bellinisurge · 28/07/2018 19:50

@LuluJakey1 - how does the paracetamol get to the shops? That's where the likely pinch points are - in distribution. Our Just In Time system does not include Tesco or whoever having months of stock in place.
I assume it will sort itself out, albeit more expensively for the consumer but can you afford to sit and wait for a week for the food distribution network to get sorted. Or longer?

ElyElyOy · 29/07/2018 00:06

My rubbish wasn’t collected for 4 weeks: fact, not scaremongering. Some areas of Birmingham had major issues the other year when nothing was collected and they had rats etc.

People prep because of their own personal health issues, worries about income, strike action affecting vital services, risk of flooding etc. You don’t have to, but maybe take a minute to imagine what you would do if your local bin collectors went on strike, or fuel shortages happened, or if all your accounts were frozen because of fraud or cyber attack, or because you suffered serious ill health, or major floods/fires/snow affected supply chains*

*all of which actual happen in the real world.

boringbertha · 29/07/2018 09:34

I am slowly starting to pick up the need for prepping particularly for supply chain disruptions around Brexit and also the cost of food inevitably going up afterwards. What foods/non food items do all of you envisage rising significantly after Brexit?

bellinisurge · 29/07/2018 12:01

@boringbertha - fresh fruit and veg. March is when harvests are a long way off - there's a scary name for it among veg growers "the hunger gap". Hopefully as stuff becomes more seasonally available, it will be cheaper for that period of time. Look at eating seasonally and stuff might be cheaper. E.g strawberries in January is unlikely to be a cheap do.

boringbertha · 29/07/2018 12:22

Bellinisurge - Good point about the fruit/veg! time to think about planning a veg patch maybe in my small inner city garden. Or possibly blanching & freezing available stuff beforehand and also investigating what other products can be bought & frozen such as butter & cheese. I'm on a limited income so it's a real concern if prices go up even by small amounts.

Also very keen on starting to gather together knowledge/know how for other worse case scenarios however unlikely they might seem atm.

daisychain01 · 29/07/2018 12:27

Ooo goodie goodie let's all join the I'm alright Jack party.

And come on here to gloat about our long list and how well prepare and goody we are for taking care of ourselves. Slow handclap.

bellinisurge · 29/07/2018 13:13

@daisychain01 - this is the Prepper topic. You don't need a lot of money or space to prep. Spend some time on the subject and you will hopefully see that.
As for "I'm alright, Jack" - my daughter comes before people I don't know.

OnTopOfSpaghetti · 29/07/2018 13:29

@daisychain01 what would you like us to do instead then? Genuine question. I don't seem to have any control over Brexit.... but I can have control over what supplies I choose to build up in case they are needed. You do it your way and I'll do it mine thanks.

daisychain01 · 29/07/2018 14:38

Each to their own, I agree wholeheartedly in considering what might happen with supplies post Brexit given that we know the JIT nature of supply chains of our major supermarkets.

People need to give their head a wobble taking time to type up inventory lists and obsessing about getting evaluations of what they have in their garage. The fact MN has created a board so people can satisfy what is fast becoming stockpile porn, is enabling panic mode to set in.

bellinisurge · 29/07/2018 14:43

@daisychain01 only "stockpile porn" if you get off on it. Unsurprisingly, I don't.

daisychain01 · 29/07/2018 15:24

No I mean it like the threads on "property porn" - it's becoming a bit too much of an obsession to be healthy. People need to keep it in perspective. Which I feel is compromised when there's a whole board on MN for people to do this stuff.
