Critique my stockpile please

Hi all, I’ve been slowly amassing a stockpile based on what we use and when there’s an offer on, I’ll buy 2 or 3 of said item and store the rest.
Can you please critique what I have, and give me areas for improvement? Also; if I’m missing a vital category, please tell me! We’ve been using our garage and storing in large plastic bins so far, it actually hasn’t taken up any room, it doesn’t look like much compared to what some people on this board have! Obviously I have at least 2 weeks worth of food in at any one time; my freezer & cupboards are always full because we are very fortunate. So obviously this list doesn’t include freezer stuff.

Honey. Local honey is best but even cheapo stuff is shelf stable.

furandchandeliers · 23/07/2018 12:38

Another one who wants to know what your stockpiling for?

gamerchick · 23/07/2018 12:51

Another one who wants to know what your stockpiling for?

At the minute, leaving the EU with a no deal. What did you think the stockpiling was for?

bellinisurge · 23/07/2018 13:09

And @furandchandeliers - winter to get through. We are regularly snowed in - average Manchester suburb.
So it seems like a good idea to get a bit of food resilience in.

cloudtree · 23/07/2018 13:19

I think it’s a good start. I’d add bin bags and multivitamins plus I agree with the others that you don’t have enough tinned protein or fruit/veg.

I’m surprised at those asking what the prepping is for given the media publicity around the brexit announcements and the guidance we are due to receive.

cloudtree · 23/07/2018 13:22

I freeze my flour for a couple of weeks and then tie it in a plastic bag (still in the paper bag) and then it goes in a plastic tub with a lid. No problems with pests.

bellinisurge · 23/07/2018 13:26

Good idea about storing flour. I have tended to avoid it for that reason. Cheers

Halfeatentoast · 23/07/2018 13:28

After the London terror attacks we were sent a leaflet saying to have certain emergency things in storage. I don't think it's unreasonable to do this with some food too. Though we live just outside London so maybe that's why.

ourkidmolly · 23/07/2018 14:46

For Brexit? I thought this was for an attack? Do you have a copy of the leaflet telling you what to stockpile after a terror attack?

ourkidmolly · 23/07/2018 14:46

@cloudtree
What guidance are we about to receive?

Whatthefoxgoingon · 23/07/2018 14:51

ourkidmolly

We don’t know yet. All we know is there are government notices coming in the next few weeks (for both businesses and individuals); some of us think this will include information about storing some essentials for short term disruption in food supplies due to brexit.

Whatthefoxgoingon · 23/07/2018 14:53

The fact that there will be notices is not speculation, that’s been confirmed. But we don’t know the contents of these notices.

Now amazon uk have been talking about civil unrest in the event of no deal, not sure how helpful that is under the circumstances Hmm

bellinisurge · 23/07/2018 14:54

@ourkidmolly - it's been reported over the weekend that there's going to be a government leaflet.

bellinisurge · 23/07/2018 14:56

@Whatthefoxgoingon - Amazon don't send out pinches of salt but even a prepper like me thinks that was unhelpful shit stirring on Amazon's part.

ziggiestardust · 23/07/2018 19:15

bellini agreed, there’s a lot of project fear going on right now.

Any changes in how you import/export food will take time (even if it’s not very long!) to catch up with for customs officials.

Even before the Brexit vote I had a very small stockpile in case of bad winters. Boy was I glad this year when after 2 very mild winters, when this winter hit I didn’t have to go to the shops at all! Just stayed indoors nice and cosy with my DC. It gave me a bit of a kick up the bum though, because it made me wonder like what if I hadn’t recently bought a load of toiletries/cat food etc? What if the snow lasted longer than 4-5 days? Our (old!) boiler also hit problems during the cold weather, so we’re having the whole system replaced next month.

I’ve built my stockpile up again too and started to look at having a larger, more varied one. I’ve invested in a couple of solar lanterns that double up as power banks (for phone chargers) and I’ve also been experimenting today with whether it powers my heated throw; it does and I’m delighted Grin

Great @ziggiestardust . We just need to , pardon the horrible pun, Keep calm and [whatever] on.

furandchandeliers · 23/07/2018 20:10

I haven't got a clue which is why I asked Confused

Even if something by brexit related happens then surely there'll be food available still, not everything is imported is it?

bellinisurge · 23/07/2018 20:19

It's not about production of food @furandchandeliers , it's about distribution. Supermarkets only have 3 days of stuff maximum and operate a Just In Time system so stuff turns up last minute to avoid excess storage and warehouse costs. They are vulnerable to the slightest interruption, weather or whatever. Brexit could be a "whatever " even in the short term.

gamerchick · 23/07/2018 20:22

Even if something by brexit related happens then surely there'll be food available still, not everything is imported is it?

Just imagine your scenarios. Say for eg there are disruptions in supermarket deliveries and your local one uses up what it has and has more empty shelves than stuff, you go elsewhere and it's the same. What will you do the next time they fill those shelves up knowing the same thing is likely to happen again?

OnTopOfSpaghetti · 23/07/2018 20:23

Thanks to MN I am going to start basic prepping. Planning to build up some basics and store in plastic boxes under the bed. I am not a hysterical or panicky person as a rule, but this just seems like sensible steps to take if it all goes tits up during/after Brexit. I've started a list and each time I do a shop I will get a few bits. Thanks for the thread, it is really helpful.

furandchandeliers · 23/07/2018 20:28

I still don't really understand Blush

I grow my own fruit and veg and we've got twenty chickens so we'll never starve I guess.

Where can I read a guide to worst case scenario post brexit for dummies Smile

furandchandeliers · 23/07/2018 20:29

I don't mean we will eat the chickens btw. Unless it gets really bad 😂

catsofa · 23/07/2018 20:30

ziggie please could you link your heated throw and power bank lanterns? If our gas fails in winter we'll freeze!

bellinisurge · 23/07/2018 20:31

Good idea @OnTopOfSpaghetti - what works for you and suits you. That's the key.

bellinisurge · 23/07/2018 20:32

@furandchandeliers - not everyone grows their own fruit and veg or keeps chickens. In fact most don't
