Preppers

Why has the Preppers sub-forum died off?

This part of Mumsnet was started up because there was an active take over of topics and calls for it to be started but it has died off pretty quickly. Why had this happened?
I thought at times of uncertainty (Brexit, house prices, terrorism, political uncertainty) it would be very useful, are people using other resources? Closing in on themselves for prepping or have you all given up?

Most topics get used a lot at first then people forget about them and carry on sticking every thing in AIBU.

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 23/06/2017 16:12

I think it's because a lot of basic stuff has already been covered in there, there's no need to keep reposting it, except for newbies maybe.I love preppers and prepping but there's a limit to what you can talk about unless you are an absolute fanatic.

And posters keep posting perfect preppers topics under chat or aibu. There was one just after the Grenfell tragedy "what do I pack in my emergency evacuation bag' which would have been perfect in preppers.

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 23/06/2017 16:13

Or what Highalert said more succinctly Grin

KeiraKnightleyActsWithHerTeeth · 25/06/2017 22:42

I suppose you're both right. I really enjoyed this forum still and wish it was still as popular.

Many of the threads are in effect reference threads now.

KeiraKnightleyActsWithHerTeeth · 25/06/2017 23:35

Very true cozie although I would say a lot if it goes to waste as most people don't know this topic exists purely because it is so quiet.

I participated a fair bit at the beginning but once I was prepped as much as I could I stopped coming on.

However I am now thinking about it more as we're planning on moving from a flat to a house next year and the prepper in me is getting all excited at the extra stuff I can prep/buy/plan... Blush

I currently live in a flat in the centre of a capital city. In case of emergency/disaster/attack/epidemic/whatever I highly doubt we'd survive. As we're planning on moving outside the city i have a bit more hope... oh dear, that sounds pretty depressing! But it's what DH says when i try to prep.

TatterdemalionAspie · 30/07/2017 10:29

I posted on a few threads in at the beginning, but found it pretty unfriendly, tbh. Would pop in to read threads from time to time, but didn't participate after that. Maybe that's got something to do with it?

ShoesHaveSouls · 10/08/2017 01:12

Talk of guns put a fair few off I think.

MrsTerryPratchett · 10/08/2017 01:28

Talk of guns put a fair few off I think. True but prepping is so varied for various things that could happen that they are bound to get a mention. People have watched too much Walking Dead.

ShoesHaveSouls · 10/08/2017 01:34

I'm a natural prepper - I plan for stuff - I do have canned goods and water in my garage - but not in any amounts that would take us through nuclear armagedden.

But may carry us through a power cut for a few days- that sort of thing.

A few of the earlier posters on here were very - ahem - well, a little extreme. There's a huge preppers culture (partic in the US) and they are quite frightening.

MrsTerryPratchett · 10/08/2017 01:36

You can go down a rabbit hole very quickly in the States. I innocently searched for canning supplies and ended up in a world of chemical toilets and bunkers.

It was awesome.

Modestine · 10/08/2017 01:38

Surely they have all bugged out and have no internet?

ShoesHaveSouls · 10/08/2017 01:39

Yes, it's fascinating in a way. There are endless youtube videos of people with plans to survive in the mountains etc. Some of them, you almost feel they'll be disappointed to never use their supplies...

Newtssuitcase · 10/08/2017 06:09

I have been on since the early days under a couple of different names but would agree with the others. If you're interested in prepping then you've probably got the basics covered just in case. You then get on with your life and only think about it every now and then. We're not all complete loonies, just very normal people who also think its a good idea to be able to fend for yourself for a while if necessary.

I've been focussing on my kitchen garden which is partly linked to the whole prepping thing but doesn't get me quite as many Confused faces. I'm in a much better position that I was six months ago now that I have home grown vegetables coming out of my ears.

Coem on today though to see what was going on what with the North Korea crisis etc.

InfiniteSheldon · 10/08/2017 06:19

I still post just don't get many responses Grin

HeartsTrumpDiamonds · 10/08/2017 06:19

We're not all complete loonies

Good to know Grin

Newtssuitcase · 10/08/2017 06:29

Ahhh sheldon I'll come on a bit more and keep you company.. Grin

What tends to happen is that the threads pop up in active and then more people poke their heads around the bunker door to see what's going on.

SideOrderofSprouts · 10/08/2017 07:48

I tend to find it gets busier when Donald trump
Wiggles his Willy in the direction of
North Korea.

Newtssuitcase · 10/08/2017 07:53

Now that doesn't conjure up pleasant images..

InfiniteSheldon · 10/08/2017 09:09

Interestingly we've just had a bit of a financial hiccup whereby dh learnt nothing for a year and spent all our savings (doing up a rental property not scratching his arse!!). The fact that we generally prep (low outgoings/own veg/solar panels) and had a great store of prepped food has seen us through. We've also learnt more about what to pickle and dry and what not to bother with.
This year's crop of beetroot is going largely uneaten like MrsTerry and last year's pickled beetroot is too sharp a taste for either of us. Rice pasta and most tinned stuff was good but some ...tinned pilchards wtf no with a helping of get to fuck. So we are wiser and ready to prep afresh.

Generally this is what I prep for: financial hardship as my dh is a big dreamer and tends to get a bit carried away. He preps for Armageddon

cozietoesie · 11/08/2017 14:13

I feel a definite 'beetrootitis' coming over the board. Grin I must look up some of the old recipes.

Newtssuitcase · 11/08/2017 16:33

There must be something tasty you can do with beetroot. It grows so easily. Its annoying.

cozietoesie · 11/08/2017 17:09

What kind are you growing? My old books are very emphatic that you need to know the type to cook it right. (Globe or Long.)

InfiniteSheldon · 11/08/2017 17:10

I like it roasted and mixed with horseradish it's great in coleslaw but I grow loads and never actually want to pick itConfusedSadHmm
