...What happens? I've literally no idea...

First off use this site to check your risk level,

nuclearsecrecy.com/nukemap/

The likely targets are going to be military bases, power stations etc.

It is expected that the U.K. Would surrender after 3 missiles hit.

Most modern weapons are airburst, they explode in the air above a target, as a result there is a lot less radiation. Therefore contrary to pipeline belief the damage will be localized. There will be lots of refugees, food shortages etc.

Let me know if you have any specific questions

Depending where you live there will be a siren that goes off.

Every TV network will be interrupted with a message telling you an attack is imminent something like this if you live in the U.K.

You need to get into a place where there are no windows, preferably as low down as possible such as a basement.

Bring non perishable foods, batteries and a radio (batteries for radio - radio to hear about what's going on).

If you are in an area with a tub or taps, fill as many buckets or the tub with as much water as possible. When the nuke attacks the water will likely get contaminated - this will give you clean water.

If you can't do this in time, get water from the radiator after an attack - this water would've been present before the attack and therefore untainted. Similar with boiler water or water tank.

Wait for instructions on the radio for when you can leave your bunker - roughly 2 weeks but it varies.

There will be radioactive debris in the air and on the ground for years, but usually after the 2 weeks it's low enough to not cause acute radioactive sickness.

After the attack there will be emergency services like ambulances that will come and help survivors, but only after the all clear.

There won't be sirens, UK got rid of most of those after the Cold War

overwroughtowl · 13/04/2017 17:14

Every TV network will be interrupted with a message telling you an attack is imminent I'd know nothing then as it's always netflix/prime on in my house.

There are sirens here, originally used for something else but sounds remarkably like an air raid siren. Went off during the summer and I nearly shit myself as it hasn't been used since I was a youngster.

SarcasmMode · 13/04/2017 17:25

tob are you the one with a husband who is a nuclear engineer or is it someone else?

I thought some of the sirens were still working? I've heard one 'test' for something a while back, very eerie.

I had a neighbour freak out once when I was playing Silent Hill thinking it was an air raid siren.

Tobolsk · 13/04/2017 17:34

Yes DH is a nuclear engineer, a job that allows him to be a geek full time!

Some of the remaining sirens are now used for other thinks like flood warning.

Justcurious12 · 13/04/2017 17:43

This is absolutely fascinating, and so useful, thank you!

I was OBSESSED with the possibility of nuclear war when I was a kid - I used to plan making contamination suits out of bin liners and monitor the tinned food situation in the kitchen cupboard.

I was weird . . . Grin

insancerre · 13/04/2017 18:54

I don't want to live in a nuclear wasteland
I want to fry quckly

Tobolsk · 13/04/2017 20:51

Based on our geographical location. We will survive and continue to do so after the event.

myrtleWilson · 13/04/2017 20:55

How much notice would we get..?

user1471453601 · 13/04/2017 21:01

There a reason why they ask you to go.into a cellar, or such like. It's because you effectively bury yourself, so cause fewer problems for those left

Tobolsk · 13/04/2017 21:01

During the Cold War it was expected the government would be able to issue a 3-6 minute warning.

If you happened to be on the underground, or driving, walking the dog etc away from the radio or TV then there would be no real warning

summerfling · 13/04/2017 21:03

Have I missed something?? Confused

SparkleSoiree · 13/04/2017 21:05

It's depressing that this thread even exists. Sad

FuzzyOwl · 13/04/2017 21:10

I am really worried about a nuclear attack becoming a reality.

alltouchedout · 13/04/2017 21:15

Hopefully we all die very fast.
Honestly don't want to survive and try to live in the aftermath.

Justcurious12 · 13/04/2017 21:16

I really don't think it will happen, more curious what would happen if it did...

OP posts:
summerfling · 13/04/2017 21:17

I don't watch the news or read it so I've absolutely no idea what is going on in the world.

cozietoesie · 13/04/2017 21:33

Keep the radio on and buy some very good whisky. Smile

TheDisappearingUser · 13/04/2017 21:34

Everyone say it would hit the airbases and such. Um, where are they? Blush

LineysRun · 13/04/2017 21:39

Naval bases are Plymouth, Portsmouth, Faslane?

Whatthefoxgoingon · 13/04/2017 21:43

Are all our nuclear submarines in Scotland?

MadameCholetsDirtySecret · 13/04/2017 21:46

I hope we all die quickly. To survive would be far worse.

Happybee09 · 13/04/2017 21:46

That nuclearsecrey link won't work
