If you want a laugh about MREs and similar, there's a great YouTube star Calle Emmy Made in Japan who test them. Amongst other thing!

cozietoesie · 28/01/2017 00:15

I whooped about the 'biodegradability' of the eating implements, given the circumstances of their likely use. I'll have a look as suggested, though. Smile

MrsTerryPratchett · 28/01/2017 00:21

Canadian IMPs for preference!

cozietoesie · 28/01/2017 00:41

Lordy.

(No reflection on her - I'm just imagining a barrack room of grunts settling down to those while there's Incoming.)

MrsTerryPratchett · 28/01/2017 00:44

😀

Weedsnseeds1 · 28/01/2017 02:04

I think the doomsday people said they had only moved it forward by a minute because it was only the first week of Trump's presidency, with the implication being they expect it to move a lot closer in the next 4 years....

cozietoesie · 28/01/2017 13:09

Gee Thanks, Weeds. Grin

Weedsnseeds1 · 28/01/2017 17:16

They need a bit of slack to play with forvqhen he really gets in his stride cozie Smile

Weedsnseeds1 · 28/01/2017 17:17

For when

MiscellaneousAssortment · 28/01/2017 17:40

Well it's nice to know that world experts think the same as most of the rest of us. Perhaps I should start stockpiling...

BiddyPop · 01/02/2017 16:41

I'm working on improving my survival skills...

cozietoesie · 02/02/2017 14:44

Probably best to think about fires and loss of utilities eg power and water, Biddy. They're the most likely scenarios in the UK.

Weedsnseeds1 · 02/02/2017 14:56

May I suggest looking up rocket stoves? Easy to make, highly efficient and fun to use in the garden in the summer if Armageddon doesn't happen before that! Smile

cozietoesie · 02/02/2017 15:05

You're a right ray of sunshine this afternoon, Weeds. Smile

What is this "Doomsday clock" anyway? This is the first time I hear about it, ever.

Anyway, for backup stove I have a "Trangia", the outdoor kitchen, I've always had one, we had one at home when I grew up too. It's just one of those things you have handy whenever there's a power cut. Can't imagine having, say, cold soup for dinner. There are power cuts from time to time, more so in the past admittedly.

I'd hate being stuck in an elevator during a power cut, though. It happened to a neighbour who popped over to see me, but I didn't know. Suddenly all went black. Phone rings (mobile). -It's X, I'm stuck in the elevator right beneath your floor!!! It's pitch black!!! (No emergency lighting in said elevator).

cozietoesie · 02/02/2017 16:58

I put up a link to further details upthread, language.

Weedsnseeds1 · 02/02/2017 17:20

Serious abiut the rocket stove though cozie, impressive things, plus you get to drink a mini keg of beer first so you have the keg for the body of the stove Smile

cozietoesie · 02/02/2017 17:53

A bit of fun, then? But what about spares? Smile

(You might be better off learning how to cut and prepare peat to see you through the cold.)

Weedsnseeds1 · 02/02/2017 18:04

No, they were designed for developing countries to allow people to cook with minimal biomass, so they didn't have to spend on kerosine or charcoal. Very efficient, you can cook a meal with a handful of twigs. We have lots of peat here as well, though.

Weedsnseeds1 · 02/02/2017 18:15

A ready made one and a home made one in action. You can even run them on paper or cardboard at a pinch.

They look not bad at all. Smile

cozietoesie · 02/02/2017 18:56

Cut the peat as well though. Wink

cozietoesie · 02/02/2017 18:58

My concern - as for fruit, vegetables etc - is that by the time you realise you might need something, it would probably be too late to organise. People would likely have to go back to living more seasonally.

Weedsnseeds1 · 02/02/2017 19:23

The first photo is nettle soup as there were loads growing near our holiday accommodation! You can make one from any large tin, dustbin, concrete blocks etc. I think most people would have the materials to make one, but might not have heard of them. Also have a wood a couple of minutes walk away for fuel (peat 20 minute drive), plus a spring and nice, thick, limestone walls.
