How much water do you have per person per day in your stores?

Just that really? How much water do you plan for?

Not remotely anxious about Ebola, clicked on this out of sheer curiosity as it was is the discussions list. Am even more confused now! If you're storing water in case of Ebola outbreak, that is surely a bit nuts, and if not what are you storing it for??? And for what do you need a new topic?

Sycamoretrees · 25/10/2015 23:20

Thank you for making my laugh out loud, I know it wasn't your intention OP but this thread is MN at it's best!

PanicNotAtTheDisco · 26/10/2015 00:21

It's fine Grin I've sniggered my way through it as well Grin

It's like the Mad Hatter's Tea Party of threads, nobody is quite sure what's going on..

Confused

From what I've read, in food grade plastic bottles, tap water can be stored 6 months. Preppers recommend changing it when the clocks change

ArmchairTraveller · 26/10/2015 05:07

Not bothered about Ebola panic, just like I wasn't panicked about swine/bird flu. I've no idea what the link is between Ebola and water storage, and I don't think the OP has either. Smile
What was the point of the thread again?

StrawberryTeaLeaf · 26/10/2015 05:40

I agree we need a separate topic, but mnhq seems to think that we are all complete nutters so said no!

Grin

A preppers topic? Did they say 'nutters'? Smile

I had no idea we had MN preppers. This just came up as an active thread.

CheerfulYank · 26/10/2015 05:46

In case of a real, serious, shit-hitting-the-fan emergency, we're heading for an island on Lake Superior. Lots of fresh water there :)

ArmchairTraveller · 26/10/2015 05:58

Take some fishing line too. Smile
I like being organised, most friends would be astounded that I've got an emergency store as it's associated with being wild-eyed, defensive and way off the edge of sanity.
I'm just a woman with an emergency kit...in case. I blame my father, it was an aspect of his job and it made sense to me when I was small.

CheerfulYank · 26/10/2015 06:06

Oh yes. Fishing line and guns. :o

I don't have a stash, I just made that very basic plan after watching the Walking Dead.

ArmchairTraveller · 26/10/2015 06:17

You might be better off with a machete for zombies. And someone who can make a decent fence.

StrawberryTeaLeaf · 26/10/2015 06:21

And someone who can make a decent fence.

At speed? Like the train-track-laying in Wallace and Grommit? Smile

CheerfulYank · 26/10/2015 06:55

My brother in law is one of those weird guys with a locked room full of weapons. I think he's got something that would work for hacking, like a machete. And he and his family live next door to my parents in law, who keep chickens. So we'll swing out there first, grab all of them and some weapons and chickens (and whatever seeds FIL has lying around) and THEN take off for the island.

My parents would have to come too; my dad can build anything. My mom would mostly try to figure out who to blame for said incident, and then bad mouth them at length.

ArmchairTraveller · 26/10/2015 08:09

We have several local castles round here, with portcullises and barbicans and wells. Good views over enemy territory. That'd be my first stop, before planning on which of the UK's 6,000 or so islands to head for.

TSSDNCOP · 26/10/2015 08:35

Assuming there were such an event, how much water to last for how long. Do you have an assumed time period that you'd need to drink the stored water for eg 1 month, 1 year?

FuckTheseSixFishInParticular · 26/10/2015 13:33

I think it depends on what you're expecting to happen, and how long you want to be prepared for. Generally speaking, the most likely thing in the UK is severe weather, so it shouldn't be more than about 72 hours unless you get snowed in over a bad winter (but then snow is water anyway, and if you live that rurally you usually have snow shifting equipment so it's still not a problem).

In some cases, like a burst main or water quality problem a water company will just truck in water in a bowser so there shouldn't be a problem either. There is a finite amount of water that can be stored for anyone, so for a really prolonged lack of drinkable water you're not looking at storage but proper filtration systems.

Of course, some mumsnetters aren't in the UK and live in more epic disaster prone areas (earthquake zones, hurricane zones etc) so that's a whole other ball game.

atticusclaw2 · 27/10/2015 21:36

I have 200 litres of bottled water, 100 litres of tap water, a life straw which filters 1000 litres, two ,large water bitts which each hold 200 litres, 200 cans of diet coke (special offer!) and about 15 cartons of orange juice.

Bubbletree4 · 27/10/2015 21:43

I have one litre of water, got them with lunch and doesn't drink them. I wasn't aware people stored water. What is a prepper? Is it someone who prepares for disasters?

atticusclaw2 · 27/10/2015 21:44

Not disasters as such, just for any emergency situation.

For me its mainly getting snowed in and because I'm lazy and don't like going to the shops very often!

megletthesecond · 27/10/2015 21:48

I shouldn't read your threads, you preppers are a bad influence on me. If bad snow is forecast I'll start hoarding again. I've currently got 3 bottles of water in the loft.

I do know that if the water goes off to fill the bath and every possible container with tap water while I still can.

ThomasRichard · 27/10/2015 21:58

I've got about 10l. Water is one of the things I have on my list to stock up on.

And prepper threads should be prefixed 'Topic takeover'. Tis the law Wink

LittleBearPad · 27/10/2015 22:01

None. These threads are very odd. What exactly are you concerned about?

ThomasRichard · 27/10/2015 22:08

Redundancy, bad weather, fuel crisis, water mains leak, contaminated water supply...

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 27/10/2015 22:09

Prepping, LittleBear. We are worried about...not being prepared.

atticusclaw2 · 27/10/2015 22:11

watch "Blackout" on 4OD and you'll get it.
