Hi,

sorry don’t know the technical name
for this procedure so Apologies in advance if it offends anyone, I have one of these
booked in after chickening out on my 2nd round of abortion tablets, just couldn’t do it at home for hours in end without a medical
enviroment! Anyone had one and could possibly tell me what it was like?

Its called surgical

rainbowbaby2 · 05/06/2024 14:05

I had one recently but for a miscarriage. As much as the word 'vacuum' triggers and upsets me, it's pretty accurate. I had local anaesthetic and it's traumatised me. The sounds, seeing it all, the pain etc.
Our situations sound different but if you are going for that option I would highly recommend being put to sleep. The recovery is pretty quick but mentally for me it's made me very unwell, but that could be due to the fact I was awake when I had it done.

rainbowbaby2 · 05/06/2024 14:07

I hope that doesn't scare you. That's just my experience, I think the mental pain of it was worse than the physical. It was manageable.
Afterwards I did have a lot of cramping but I did get back to normal after a couple of days.

Scribbless99 · 05/06/2024 14:09

So sorry to hear of your loss! No one should ever have to go through anything like that esp after the mental process you have to endure through miscarriage. I have chosen to have an abortion due to personal reasons, but how bad would you say the pain was? Comparable? X

I really don't think this is the appropriate thread for this topic.
When you say you "chickened out" of the second set of tablets... did you take the first set? You are aware how the tablets work aren't you? The second set only causes you to expel the foetus, it's the first that stops the development.

TallulahBetty · 05/06/2024 14:10

You'll get more answers on the 'pregnancy choices' board.

Scribbless99 · 05/06/2024 14:12

Yes I took the first one that stops the hormone and I am aware
of how they work, I have decided I want to go along with the pregnancy just opt for a different method and I have contacted the bpas clinic and have opted for another method, if you look at stories the tablet method sounds very long enduring and painful which is something I’m too scared about to do at home, so the next option was a surgical one, but not one you go to sleep for.

Sorry if there a way I can move
it or do I delete it and start again?

How far along are you?

I think you're talking about MVA which is generally done under local anaesthetic. There are other surgical methods which are carried out under general.

I had an MVA under local for a missed miscarriage. I was nil by mouth from 6am, in at 8am, out by about 11. But i was only in there for about 30 mins. It was uncomfortable but only very brief physical pain (and that wasn't extreme). They can adjust the numbing and local anaesthetic for you. Period- like cramps for a week or so afterwards, and bleeding for a couple of weeks.

The physical discomfort wasn't really a bother compared with how I felt emotionally.

I was able to take in a playlist of relaxing music to play on my phone.

That’s not fair, many people chose it for various reason or don’t have a choice for health reasons you can’t judge anyone without knowing their circumstances.

I really don't think that's at all appropriate.
Women all have a choice and I believe looking at her previous thread that the OP is only 6w along, this is not a "baby" but a collection of cells.

rainbowbaby2 · 05/06/2024 14:18

@NotAllowed as much as this post triggered me you can't judge someone's choice of abortion. It's her right to make that decision and you don't know her circumstances. I'm sure op is already feeling bad enough as it is without extra judgement.

Fedupinawaitingroom · 05/06/2024 14:18

It depends how far along you are. For surgical pre 12 weeks it’s a simple dilation and aspiration procedure and relatively simple. Post 12 weeks the surgeon will dilate the cervix and use tools to separate limbs and head from the foetus and then remove each segment and sometimes use some aspiration or curettage tools . Botha re usually straightforward. Slightly more risks with post 12 weeks procedure but you will be counselled about this at the time of consent.
good luck Flowers

Edited to change terminology to foetus apologies if previous wording was insensitive

God forbid you are ever in a situation where this is your only option 😳

I have reported your replies and asked MNHQ to remove them. You are being totally inappropriate and insensitive, no one here wants to hear that. If you haven't got anything nice/supportive to say, don't say anything at all.

Edited

So I’m only 6 weeks so think I have to wait until 7 weeks, fingers crossed it’s not as painful as everyone has described the tablets

OP has just asked for factual experiences and / or information. That’s what we need to respect. It’s her choice

WhatInFreshHell · 05/06/2024 14:23

@NotAllowed How awful of you??

It will be a very simple aspiration procedure and you will likely have minimal to no pain after and bleeding similar to that of a period. At that stage it is very early and majority of the time quick. I hope you are ok and I wish you all the best. I do think in some ways despite being surgery still easier than the tablets as not all women can manage the process with them and hopefully the surgical route will be easier for you Flowers

Bramblecrumble22 · 05/06/2024 14:24

It's not painful.

CrunchySnow · 05/06/2024 14:26

@NotAllowed, you have been reported. Have your views, but you don't need to share them in this thread. I would have thought the OP is going through enough without comments like yours. OP, I've supported many women in situations like this. The general feedback is that the surgical option is ok. Most women don't experience too much pain and physical recovery is quick. Emotional recovery takes longer and you need to take it easy on yourself. Ignore inconsiderate posters who have no idea.

Cas112 · 05/06/2024 14:26

Ignore the woman that said poor baby

I was in pain for a couple of days I dont want to say like a period pain as it felt worse than that for me but in the same region. You will need lots of rest and pain killers at home, no heavy lifting

Everyone's pain threshold is different, some people are ok. I know I was in slightly more pain than expected
