Scan before termination

LOSTladyscarlett · 20/06/2022 22:03

Just wondering if anyone else refused a scan before a termination.

I really don't want to have one. I just want it over and done with.
My mind is made up I have one child I don't want another and financially can't cope with another anyways.

But I really just don't want to have a scan. Also how far gone were people when they had their termination and could you have the pills?

Thanks for reading

I don't think it matters what others have done. Abortion is always a personal choice.

How far gone are you @LOSTladyscarlett?

yyydelilah · 20/06/2022 22:09

I'm sorry for your situation OP.

I'm not entirely sure if it's still the same, but in my experience, you have to have a scan in order to date the pregnancy.

You can only have the pills up to a certain point. Once you pass a certain number of weeks I think it becomes a procedure.

You can ask them to turn the screen so you don't see anything. Be honest and let them know how you feel. Id be surprised if they were willing to accommodate you.

Good luck Flowers

I think they need to do one to check you’re suitable for the procedure, it could be dangerous if you were further along than you thought you were, or you could find you weren’t pregnant at all.
You don’t need to look.

MrsFinkelstein · 20/06/2022 22:11

IME the scan is usually only done if there is some dubiety over dates or whether the pregnancy is intrauterine.
It all comes down to how many weeks you are.

Sofasogood1 · 20/06/2022 22:12

Hi op. I understand why you might not want a scan but it's important. It's not like when you have a scan to confirm a wanted pregnancy - it's a more sober experience. Ask them to turn the screen. I had a scan before getting early abortion pills. They couldn't find the pregnancy to confirm I was pregnant despite tests detecting I was. I was immediately referred to hospital in case of an ectopic pregnancy which could have been awful of course. Turned out I was about to naturally miscarry which I did a few days later. But the scan is important for your health. Best of luck to you x

yyydelilah · 20/06/2022 22:14

Sorry, that should have said unwilling to accommodate you.

The earlier on in the pregnancy you take the pills the better pain wise. The closer to the cut off point the more painful it is. But then everyone is different.

Babdoc · 20/06/2022 22:14

I remember years ago one of our gynae registrars performed a surgical termination without prescanning, didn’t realise it was a twin pregnancy, and left one embryo inside.
The patient sued, as she didn’t realise she was still pregnant until too late.
My hospital ruled that all terminations had to be scanned after that. It’s a sensible precaution.

clpsmum · 20/06/2022 22:16

I had a scan but they turn the screen away you don't see anything xx

Just asked as if rather not because I was told when I phoned bpas that the next available scan appointment was 4 weeks away.
I'm currently 6 weeks.

Not sure when the cut off point but it's impossible for me to find childcare and I read that they don't allow children (which I totally understand)

I am completely alone in this.... not that I mind. I've been alone for a long time. X

Thank you.

I feel stupid for getting myself in this situation. But it was contraception failure. I'm 30 I should be sensible.

That's understandable
That's awful that happened but I guess I understand that's the procedure.

I just don't want to have to wait and go over the time I'm allowed the pills cause having surgery is not as easy for me as I have a son and no childcare. Xx

I'm sorry you're alone. Have you tried your GP or Marie Stopes? Do you have anyone around? Does your child go to nursery or school? I bet someone will help if you ask.

yyydelilah · 20/06/2022 22:24

Don't beat yourself up Op, it happens more often than you know. I'm as sensible as they come and it's happened to me, twice! Contraceptive failure both times.

It's sucks but we have to be pragmatic about these things.

IME the surgery was easier than the pills. But again it all depends on dates.

Nursery I'm not sure if I can book extra days without notice.

I'm sorry I'm just stressing and feel so stupid for getting myself in this situation.

It's the last time I ever let myself go near a man again.

It's so stressful. Did you terminate both? What procedure did you have how far alone were you?

Im just over 6 weeks. I reallllly just want this over with though. But im also in no fit state financially or mentally to take on another baby.

Sofasogood1 · 20/06/2022 22:37

You're not stupid op, please stop beating yourself up. If you need a day please ask your nursery, or the mum of one of your son's friends. You dont have to say what it's for; wisdom teeth removal, family emergency, whatever. Ask - people are generally kind and want to be helpful.

I think the scan is to check the situation and in case of multiple fetuses. I had a scan but said I didn't want to see or hear anything and I didn't.

yyydelilah · 20/06/2022 22:43

Yep terminated both pregnancies.

The first time I didn't even know I was pregnant until I was 9 weeks. Surgical procedure. In and out with minimal recovery.

Second time I took the pills and I was right before the cut off. It was tough. I was pretty poorly and it took me a while to recover.

I see that you have difficulty re childcare, but please find a way. Get this sorted asap and then you can move on with your life

What is the cut off?

I've read online it can be 8 weeks
Some day 10weeks and another site said 11

It's all so confusing.

With surgery is it a day thing or an hour in and out?
Xx sorry for all the questions. Xx

It's a long time ago now, so things may have changed. I think it was around 10 weeks for the pills but your GP will advise what current protocols are.

Surgery I'd say half a day. I had a general anaesthetic but I think there was also an option to be awake and have a local. Obviously if you have a general they keep you longer to make sure you're able to function properly afterwards.

Call Marie Stopes and see is they can give you some up to date information.

I have my bpas call Wednesday. I'm just fretting and wished it was sooner.

I read somewhere that it is 8 weeks for pills on the NHS and 10 weeks for private? Not sure how reliable that is though. Don’t worry OP, you will sort it, don’t stress.

I've just had a termination last week, a medical one. I had a phone call, no one saw me, no one offered a scan, they accepted my dates and I had the pills by the next day. I was about 5 ish weeks. It was fine, I've had heavier periods! I was at work the entire time too! Still bleeding now 5 days later but totally manageable. Obviously everyone is different though. I've had two surgical too and I'd say the only difference was feeling a bit more satisfied that it had worked with the surgical.

Oh really? In a way im glad to read you weren't offered a scan. There is some hope I might just have the call and get the pill.

Im pretty sure of my dates. I would say 99.9%
That's the first I've read of someone being able to be at work. I wish you all the best.
Thanks for taking the time to reply.

Im not bothered too much about the pain. Just want it over and done with now. Xx

There was an incident recently where a woman took pills and turned out to be months further along than she thought so maybe regulations have changed off the back of that?
