Termination at hospital - is it possible? Desperate

Ive posted a few new threads over the last few weeks, basically I’m in a tricky situation whereby my partner does not drive (for medical reasons). We have a small baby and my local BPAS clinic only offers a TOP under a local (I have PTSD) from a previous Gynae procedure and I just don’t think it’s possible I can undergo this treatment without a GA.

The only option I think open to me is surgical but it’s at a BPAS location that is around 200 miles from me, meaning I will have to stay over but I can’t get treatment without someone to ‘collect’ me after - my partner can of course do that but it would mean 2 nights away with him and our small son.

There are no other providers in my area (I’m south east) I’ve tried MSI and they are not local and neither are NUPAS.

I’m wondering, I’m so desperate but has anyone had any success in being treated for a termination in a local hospital?

I know I need to ask BPAS if this is an option and I will on Tuesday when I have my call with them but I am so anxious, I can’t eat, sleep or function worrying I’m going to have t travel so far for a procedure.

My other option is to keep the baby which due to my mental health is not a great option.

Please please if anyone has been able to be treated in hospital due to these/or similar circumstances do let me know.

Thank you x

I had a friend who was treated at their local hospital as I picked them up after the procedure. They weren’t near to you though.

Didn’t want your question to go unanswered. Yes I believe it is possible, maybe call your GP and they can start the ball rolling?

Spudyoulikeit · 18/02/2022 19:24

Your GP can refer you but it might be a longer wait than private. Not sure if they would offer GA though. I think they would usually offer medical first. How many weeks do you think you are? X

Luckyme30 · 18/02/2022 19:53

@Waddlegoose thank you for your reply.
I think best thing to do is for me to contact my GP I’m just so ashamed. I had originally told him I was keeping the pregnancy and now feel bad for changing my mind.

@Spudyoulikeit thank you for your reply too.
I’m just over 8 weeks now, I’ve had a c-section previously which I’ve read can mean that BPAS will want to scan me so I think that will delay the time it takes to be seen.

I’ve been reading all the health websites for my area and all says it’s done through BPAS so really panicking my GP will just refer to BPAS which I’ve done myself x

In my area there are 3 services commissioned for TOPs but none of them are local hospitals. There is zero chance that you would be offered a termination at our local hospitals. BPAS or Marie Stopes or another provider (I can't recall which) would be your only options (and it's entirely self referral). Sorry it's not what you want to hear...

bluejelly · 18/02/2022 19:58

You really have nothing to be ashamed of @Luckyme30
Any rationale and kind GP would understand...

Luckyme30 · 18/02/2022 20:03

@TheHomesickRestaurant Ive contacted all 3 providers - NUPAS &MSI do not cover my area so won’t see me. BPAS cover my area yet really are limited on options and the wait times so long. I knew it was probably unlikely that I would get treatment in an NHS hospital.

@bluejelly thank you. My mental health is suffering, I had terrible PND with my son and I can’t bring another baby into this world after how I suffered last time, irs not fair to my son or any other child.

I guess in my head I feel like I will be judged for making the decision I’ve made.

Contact your GP and explain the situation. I was offered the option of medical through BPAS or a surgical under GA at our local hospital. That was about 3 years ago. Hospitals do D&Cs which is essentially the same thing. I chose the medical route 1st (which resulted in heavy bleeding) and ended up having a surgical under GA at a local hospital in the end.

Ra12345 · 18/02/2022 20:12

Where are you op. Can I help in anyway? I'm west London.

HeyBlaby · 18/02/2022 20:19

I was referred to hospital by choice via my GP for this.

Luckyme30 · 18/02/2022 20:31

@DingleyDel this was my thinking, I had a missed miscarriage and was treated with a d&c at my local hospital (though did have to fight for it). So I thought it is the same procedure.
Do you mind me asking where you are based?

@Ra12345 thank you so much, I’m a little bit further afield, im near to Oxford.

@HeyBlaby can I asked where you are based in the UK? Ive seen a few posts where people have been referred to hospital but it’s not been anywhere near where I am based.

DingleyDel · 18/02/2022 20:53

I’m in the south west (Somerset). I went through my GP who referred me to straight to local EPU for a scan. Our local hosp definitely offered surgical under GA at that point. I remember being quite surprised that the local EPU did abortions, as my only experience them was with a prior miscarriage. I would definitely push the issue with your GP explaining the PTSD.

Luckyme30 · 18/02/2022 21:10

@DingleyDel thanks so much, I’m going to give them a call on Monday morning and explain about the PTSD, here’s hoping that they will allow the procedure at my local hospital.

Thanks for your reply.

Crikey op you'd think in Oxford you'd have more options. There's a Marie Stopes clinic near me in Ealing who do it I think - can you ask to get referred there? An hour ish train from Oxford.

Luckyme30 · 19/02/2022 08:12

@Ra12345 I know! We are so limited and the nearest I could find (they don’t give much information) that do under a GA was Bournemouth but it means my partner and baby coming along (as they won’t let me go without someone taking me home).

I think I will enquire about Ealing as could easily catch the train back home.

Thanks for your help :)

Moancup · 19/02/2022 08:17

Google the hospitals you could visit and termination. It doesn’t tend to be advertised well, but many of them have self referral options for abortion.

Ra12345 · 19/02/2022 08:38

Op also ask if there's a waiver to sign to discharge yourself without anyone having to meet you. I was under sedation for something recently (completely knocked out but not GA) and they let me leave without signing something.

Luckyme30 · 19/02/2022 08:44

@Moancup thank you, I’ve googled all local hospitals and it all says the service is managed by BPAS. I will contact my GP on Monday and ask if it’s a possibility to use a local hospital. I think there’s one I could try that are a little further afield but not so much as the alternative BPAS can offer.

@Ra12345 thank you I have a phone consult with BPAS on Tuesday so I will ask the question.

I struggle to believe that I am the only woman who’s ever been in this situation and I can’t believe I would be denied treatment due to having no other option but to travel to treatment alone.

OP posts:
Ra12345 · 19/02/2022 08:46

Sorry let me leave WITH signing something.

Ra12345 · 19/02/2022 08:51

(If you can go to Ealing I'll meet you from the clinic and put you on a train.)

PinkSnowandStars · 19/02/2022 09:26

I’m just across the bucks/Oxfordshire border and I know it’s not offered in any of the local hospitals here. Is London an option?

Luckyme30 · 19/02/2022 11:13

@Ra12345 that’s very kind of you thank you so much!

@PinkSnowandStars really? Oh dear that’s sort of confirmed my suspicions. London is an option as can use the train which could be the best option..

OP posts:
ShovellyJoe · 19/02/2022 11:20

When I went through it, I was desperate to be awake during the procedure and my only option was to have a GA at the local hospital so the complete opposite to you.

I'm in Norfolk.

MaizeAmaze · 19/02/2022 11:28

Does it need to be a surgical procedure? Would your PTSD be triggered if you had a medical abortion at home?

Your GP is an arse if they are difficult about you changing your mind.

I hope you find a solution.

newbiename · 19/02/2022 11:28

OP Bournemouth is not 200 miles from Oxford.
Could you get a coach and all stay in a B&B for one night ? Not ideal I know.
It's dreadful how far woman have to travel to access safe treatment.
