Why'd she do that?

I had to have an emergency scan today (23 weeks) b/c midwife was unable to find baby's heartbeat w/doppler.

The sonographer was going along nice and slowly, and just when we were trying to make out the baby's bits (cuz they won't tell you the sex here), she flicked that scanner thingy away from between baby's legs!

And then she wouldn't go back there. She examined all baby's lower abdominal organs from its backside.

Huh? Why'd she do that?

Guess we'll find out what it is when it's born, but it's driving us round the twist now! We were just starting to make out the features, too. She made it squirm around, too, so then it was all active and we weren't able to see the private bits!

Yeah but it's not like we're sonographers familiar w/how in utero babies look. I was afraid she'd seen something bad, b/c she flicked it away so fast. I said, 'Is something wrong?!' (after all, I'd been sent there b/c the midwife couldn't find the heartbeat). She said, 'Oh no, it's fine and then proceded to show us its organs, the vessels in its cord, etc. But she showed the bladder and kidneys from its spine.

ahhh well maybe it was very obvious! as swiper suggested...
maybe they get crazy people who research it beforehand so they can tell! lol

agree with starlover. Sounds like she was following rules. You don't have to be a professional sonographer to know which sex a baby is on a scan. Congratulations by the way

We don't even get 20 weeks scans here. Only 13 week ones. Unless something goes wrong - like the midwife tries to find the baby's heartbeat w/two dopplers and nothing happens.

Man, that was sort of scary!

I couldn't even tell you which way was up on that kid until she pointed it out! It was all Greek to me!

When we went for a scan at around that time with ds because the midwife thought he wasn't growing - when the lady went over his front it was really obviously a boy!!

oh expat there are people who would!
dunno... my scan was really clear, and the sonographer purposefully steered clear of the area because she knew i didn't want to know.... so i guess in some cases it can be pretty obvious

Edinburgh, starlover. Women in the Lothians are only offered one scan unless they pay privately for another one at 20 weeks.

The one scan we get is the 12-13 weeks one where it's too soon to tell anyhow.

It was the ONE appointment DH came along for! He never could make the ones w/DD b/c he was always working. He missed the 12 weeks scan b/c he couldn't find a place to park.

So he goes along to this and she can't find baby - with two different dopplers.

It was a little frightening.

I had a lat scan and saw ds's 'bits' in all their glory! Trust me , they were very easily identifiable, even to a non medical eye!

Sadly some hospitals will refule to say the sex in case someone decides to terminate the 'wrong' sex baby (not saying for one second that you would you understand, but some hospitals have a blanket policy)

I already knew that we were having a boy as I had an amnio and that gives you a definitive answer anyway

Aw, HMB. That's so sad to think someone wouldn't want a healthy little baby b/c of its sex. .

We don't care what sex it is, tbh, although a lot of people say 'bet you want a wee laddy' b/c we already have a precious wee girl. Silly, though. It took us months to conceive this little one.

Knowing the sex aside I think it's a bit off you aren't offered a 20 week scan for abnormality reasons. When we went they checked over everything the bones in her face, hands, legs, feet, internal organs, you even see the chambers of the heart beating away, puts your mind at rest as well.

Thought this was routine throughout the country

Nope. Not here in the Lothians. The issue's been raised by 'The Scotsman' newspaper. They say it's b/c there aren't enough sonographers.
