Why'd she do that?

I had to have an emergency scan today (23 weeks) b/c midwife was unable to find baby's heartbeat w/doppler.

The sonographer was going along nice and slowly, and just when we were trying to make out the baby's bits (cuz they won't tell you the sex here), she flicked that scanner thingy away from between baby's legs!

And then she wouldn't go back there. She examined all baby's lower abdominal organs from its backside.

Huh? Why'd she do that?

I had late scans because I had pre eclamsia and they were woried that ds wasn't growing well enough. I had a section 2 weeks early and he was a whopping 9 2! I also had a repeat scan at 16 weeks as he wouldn't stay still long enough to check the chambers of the heart....and he hasn't slowed down any in the 5 years since!

Sad isn't it that people would do such an awful thing (unless there were genetic probelms linked to gender IYSWIM)

Expat - I live in the west of Scotland and got a scan at 7 weeks, 10 weeks and 20 weeks. All on the NHS. And they will tell you the sex of the baby if you want to know.

expatinscotland · 18/08/2005 20:21

Yep, that's true, Kristina, in other parts of Scotland women get more scans. It's a Lothians thing that we only get one scan.

Glad baby is okay. In the Highlands we only get one scan as well, around 13 weeks I think.

Ditto Glasgow. Only 12 week scan and the Queen Mums have a new policy as of this summer that if you do come in for an emergency scan later they won't tell you the sex. The sonographer told us they suspected lots of people were faking symptoms in order to get later scans so they could find out the sex. They've put the ban in place temporarily to see if the number of emergency scans they have to do falls.

Ah, so it's not just Edin then. Well, the midwife tried w/two dopplers to find baby's heartbeat at the ante-natal appointment and couldn't, so that's why I was referred for scan. She kept hearing placenta, so they also scanned to check where placenta was (it's posterior). Baby was all over the place and that may be why she wasn't able to pick it up.

On the day I went in to be induced with ds2 I had to have an extra scan to check that he wasn't in a breech position (they could only hear his heartbeat from the top of my bump). The MW told us (without us mentioning it) that he could see which sex the baby was but he still wasn't allowed to tell us due to hospital policy.

OMG expat you're having a boy!

As my husband says, 'Guess we'll just have to wait and see'.

As long as its organs are okay we're not bothered. It was kind of cool to see all the vessels in its cord and the wee organs.

Yeah, me too. But it will be a lot better once I get a big ol' savoury meal in me. Mmmm. Something nice and rich as well.
