Recommendations for nappy creams etc

Just wondering if anyone had recommendations for nappy creams, nipple creams etc. Are they all the same? I was just on the Mothercare website and there seemed to be a variety of creams etc. What are the best ones?

Also - breast pads? Any recommendations?

Thanks!

I used kamillosan nipple cream, was fab, sudocrem was a fab nappy cream and I used boots breast pads, the ones that are individually wrapped so you can pop em in your hospital/change bag and they have a sticky bit on so they don't fall out of your bra! I will be using all these products this second time round, they were all great so I see no need to change, all reasonably priced too.

emmyloo2 · 06/07/2010 10:50

Thanks ladyjadey. Did you get all of this stuff at boots or did you order online? Sudocrem is available online from Mothercare I noticed so I will definitely get myself some of that. Boots breastpads sound good as well, thanks!

Hello, kamillosan is fab for nappy rash too, easily available from boots etc

emmyloo2 · 06/07/2010 11:06

Thanks pixie! Will get a couple of tubes. My nipples are already having problems and I am only 22 weeks so I need some already. God help me when I start breastfeeding.

Lansinoh for nipple cream definately

Bepanthen was the nappy cream that worked best for us.

SparkyMalarky · 06/07/2010 11:11

Lansinoh definitely again. And another vote for Bepanthen as an every day nappy cream, although I keep metanium in the house for teething times as the nappy rash tends to get worse and that clears it up in no time.

PlumBumMum · 06/07/2010 11:12

completely agree with Lionstar

Lansinoh for nipple cream definitely

Bepanthen is the BEST, only sorry I didn't discover it with the first 2!

Stickhasgrownup · 06/07/2010 11:20

Sudocream is ok as a barrier for general use.. but I found it rubbish when my LO's actually had a rash.
I vote Bepanthen - its the best and not as messy to use as some of the others.
Although I BF both of mine I've never needed a nipple cream so no advise there.

oldmum42 · 06/07/2010 16:06

Sudocrem, the best IME (sorry stickyhasgrownup), fantastic on really nasty rashes, also for general skin probs in babies and adults.

The important thing is actually the ZINC it contains, this really helps with skin healing. There are other creams containing zinc (such as boots Zinc and castor oil cream), but I found them not quite so good (but cheaper than Sudocrem).

Catilla · 06/07/2010 16:09

Lansinoh for nipples - their cream and the very best breast pads!

Metanium for bad nappy rash, Sudacrem for mild (watch out - Metanium stains!)

goodlifemummy · 06/07/2010 16:10

I used sudocrem, but when nappy rash was really bad, it was too thick and sticky and would pull at the skin, so switched to zinc and castor oil - absolutely brilliant - will be using it again this time.

cinnamongreyhound · 06/07/2010 16:14

Sudocrem all the way with nappy cream, have used metanium and bepanthen as I'm a childminder so use what parents provide and haven't found them to be as good.

I preferred Kamillosan for nipple cream but changed from lansinoh to Kamillosan towards the end when my nipples were recovering so could be why.

Tommee tippee breast pads, definately, I tried everything out there!

roulade · 06/07/2010 16:51

Definitely Sudocreme, you can get it in all the supermarkets too.

elk4baby · 06/07/2010 17:57

Nipple cream - Lansinoh
Breast pads - I used Lansinoh reusable and quite liked them. Also, I've heard the wool ones are pretty good too.
Baby creams - love, love, love the Organic Babies Baby Salve! It's not a rash cream, but rather a barrier cream - prevents the rash!

pallymama · 15/07/2010 14:05

Another vote for Lansinoh here.
I'm not sure if this counts as a nappy cream, or just a salve, but I love Waitrose's own Baby Bottom Butter! Even helped with nasty teething nappy rash, when sudocrem just didn't seem to cut it.

Dalrymps · 15/07/2010 14:09

Nipples - lansinoh without a doubt
Every day nappy cream - sudocrem
Nappy cream for when they get sore - metanium

Dalrymps · 15/07/2010 14:10

Oh and breastpads, I like johnsons but have heard a lot of people say the lansinoh ones are good although not tried them myself.

iwasyoungonce · 15/07/2010 14:12

With my DS have not used a nappy cream at all - not once - and he hs been absolutely fine, no nappy rash whatsoever. he is 9 months old.

Can i suggest you try this, and only use a cream if any nappy rash appears? My cousin recommended this to me, and I was a bit after using lashings of barrier cream with my DD, but I have to say she was right! It's saved me time and money, and room in my bag!

Lasinoh nipple cream worked great for me after DS bit my nipple - ouch!

chocolatefroggie · 15/07/2010 14:15

Nappy cream [http://www.erbaviva.com/detail.asp?SKU=01DCR this] is totally organic and the best ever it's £15 a tube - yes I know! but I was given some and it lasts for about 6 months even if you use it every day and it really is so much gentler than all the others I've tried but still effective.
Beware of lansinoh if your allergic to laninol I was as a kid but hadn't been for years the midwife gave me lansinoh and I had the WORST case of itchy swollen nipples tmi sorry!

chocolatefroggie · 15/07/2010 14:16

sorry here

oranges · 15/07/2010 14:18

Agree with not using any nappy cream at all. And waleda calendula nappy cream works like a dream if any rash appears. We used one tube the whole time ds was in nappies, and its still going strong with dd.

FessaEst · 15/07/2010 14:22

I only use nappy cream if needed - used all the free Bounty sudocreams instead of buying. Love metanium for a bad case of soreness.

Couldn't have carried on bfing without lansinoh!

Mole007 · 15/07/2010 14:24

Sudocrem (Tescos, Waitrose or Boots, whichever I am shopping in!) the best, and Kamillosan for nipple cream and if nappy rash does rear its head (it did for us after using bepanthon as I thnk I didn't leave DS's bum long enough to dry before putting the cream on). We started on bepanthon, but soon moved on to sudocrem after a first bout of nappy rash, and have not had any since. DS is now 10 mo, and 2nd DC due Mar, and planning sudocrem again!

Oh, and tommy Tippee breast pads were fine, and also available everywhere, and regularly on 2 for 1 at Tesco!

BaronessBomburst · 15/07/2010 14:38

Weleda Calendula nappy cream - natural, chemical free and contains zinc. Have also used aloe vera gel which was fantastic in clearing up a very nasty sore courtesy of DH's lack of nappy changing skills. (his eyes welled up when he saw what he'd done to the poor boys winkle - I know it will NEVER happen again!)

Nipple cream - none. Advice here in Holland is to moisten the nipples with breast milk and allow to dry. Acts as barrier and moisturiser and that's what they do in the rest of the world and historically. Can honestly say it worked!

Breast pads - any. Only needed them for the first few weeks away.

randomimposter · 15/07/2010 15:11

agree with Iwasyoungonce about nappy cream. I have only used it on DS on a rare few occasions when needed. MUCH easier. If rash does occur, another vote for bepanthen.
