Yesterday heard of someone being given a 70% liklehood of which sex baby she was having at 12 week scan. Anyone else experienced this and were they right in your case?

i didn't think they could tell that early??

spacecadet · 17/08/2005 18:24

i didnt think it was possible to tell at 12 weeks.

Rachey1969 · 17/08/2005 18:25

No, I don't think they can be sure, and 70% isn't really sure enough! Imagine if people terminated if they got the 'wrong' sex?

spacecadet · 17/08/2005 18:27

i was always told that the down below bits werent obvious to the naked eye until about 15 weeks.

My sister is a midwife and says in girls they look for the 'hamburger sign' ie 3 layers of tissue that go on to form the labia and that it can be more easily seen than a little willy.

RedZuleika · 17/08/2005 21:37

I rather thought that termination on the grounds of gender was not officially sanctioned in this country...?

WideWebWitch · 17/08/2005 21:39

Yes, I was told 80% likelihood of a boy at 12 week scan at the Fetal Medicine Centre in Harley St and she was a girl, so they were 100% wrong!

princesspeahead · 17/08/2005 21:42

who mentioned anything about termination redzuleika?

had a 12 week scan and was told "hmmm, might be a boy, but could go either way". have 20 wk scan in a couple of weeks and rather hoping for a girl so will keep you posted!

NomDePlume · 17/08/2005 21:45

Lol at "it might be a boy , but could go either way", talk about sitting on the fence !

princesspeahead · 17/08/2005 21:51

was relieved she didn't say "its a game of two halves" or "it isn't over until the fat baby sings" or something as well...

euurgh, didn't see that, RedZ!

jampots · 17/08/2005 21:56

cant remember at what stage I found out but may have been at 16 week scan - i have a scan photo of ds doing a wee inside me so will look at the date on that one - I found out before for definite

RedZuleika · 17/08/2005 22:08

How can you tell he's doing a wee??

I still don't know what mine is (now 35 weeks). I don't mind either way, but was a bit annoyed that they claimed at the 20 week scan that it wasn't hospital policy and they hadn't seen anyway (it was being coy). My gut feeling (for no good reason) is that it's a girl.

Re: termination - I say 'officially sanctioned' because I'm sure that it's possible to be convincing on other grounds when gender is the real reason. And the earlier one is informed of gender, the more time one has to end the pregnancy. Don't know how much of a problem that is in this country...

jampots · 17/08/2005 22:36

i have a piccie of his winkie with fluid coming out of it - sonographer told me it was wee

RedZuleika · 18/08/2005 08:59

Right... lovely. That's one to save up and show his girlfriends in years to come...

TracyK · 18/08/2005 09:07

I was told at 12 weeks that it was a boy. they saw his little willy and she said that she wouldn't have told me anything if she wasn't 100% sure. sure enough - ds was born!

Toothache · 18/08/2005 09:10

But at 12 wks... isn't the girls genital area very similar to a 'winkie'??? I thought they didn't look that different until much later in development.

Busyalexsmummy · 18/08/2005 09:21

on a scan the boys and girls genitals look exactly the same until about 16 weeks, theres no way you could tell by anything external, unless they can see something inside the baby ie ovaries...

Toothache · 18/08/2005 09:24

BAM - Thats what I thought! I was assuming they may have spotted testicles in the boys rather than a penis?

The clitoris is very enlarged at 12wks and can be mistaken for a penis.

jane313 · 18/08/2005 09:37

Mine was at about 14 weeks and she had strong suspicions it was a boy and it was.

Toothache · 18/08/2005 09:42

S'pose there is a 50/50 chance they get it right though!

My friend was told at her Private scan (21wks) that she was having a girl...... OOOOOOOPS when Philip popped out!

RedZuleika · 18/08/2005 09:51

She should get a refund on that.

TracyK · 18/08/2005 10:17

Oh you're right - I remember now - it was little grapes she saw. I knew it was a boy anyway before she told me - I had a 'feeling'.
