Retroverted Uterus and Amnio

lullabellesmummy · 25/06/2010 12:34

Hi all

After receiving my results from combined screening (1:50) we decided to go ahead with an amnio.

We went to the FMM last friday when I was 15+4 (after psyching myself up) to have the amnio only to find my uterus is 'still' retroverted and my bowel is directly in front of it. My consultant re-scheduled the amnio in 2 weeks time (next friday).

I know this is a long shot, but does anyone else have any experience of this? Would my uterus grow enough in the two weeks to be sufficient enough to push my bowel out of the way?

I'm feeling good (I just have this feeling that everything is going to be ok no matter what) but my dh has not taken it all that well and don't know how he'll cope if we have to have it pushed back again.

I have no experience of the retroverted uterus problem but I had an amnio last week (1:21) and completely understand how you and your husband are probably feeling right now.

Having to wait two more weeks would be torture and I wish you the best of luck. FWIW, you can tell your husband that my 1:21 came back all clear 48 hours after the procedure and although we are waiting on the full karotype, that is good news to be going on with.

EMS23 - that is fab news - congrats x

How did you find having your amnio (if you don't mind me asking)? Did the hospital ring you with your preliminary result or did you find out through your midwife?

Our hospital is the same r.e 48 hours for the initial results (thank goodness!). I know some hospitals charge for earlier results (which I think is disgusting!).

Lullabelles mummy- no experience as yet but just wanted to wish you luck and am going throught the nervous wait with you. I am 14 pg with dichorionic twins- one of which is high risk- 1:42- have opted for amnio rather than CVS (less tricky apparently) but now have another 3 weeks to wait (consultant on hols the week before.

EMS23- fantastic news. Also wondering how the procedure was- am a bit of a wimp about it!

Sending positive vibes to everyone in similar limbo.

EMS23 · 25/06/2010 16:05

Thank you, it was a big relief when we got the first results back on Thursday last week.
The midwife at the hospital called us to let us know. She had told us that they would call and either say "it's all clear" or "please come to the hospital to discuss your results". She also made it clear that whatever time the results came in would be when they called so they wouldn't make an arrangment in advance as they don't like sitting on results when they get them.
It was a nerve wracking time and I have never felt depths of despair like the ones I went through last week. I am lucky that my outcome has been good but it's not something I want to experience again. My husband was a shaking mess when he took the results call.
He keeps a journal and has let me read last weeks entries - he suffered a lot, I don't think I realised how much until I read that.

The amnio itself was straight forward enough and made a lot easier by a lovely, if slightly odd consultant! Odd in that he had a funny manner but that was good because he took some seriousness out of the situation.

I got very upset and tense and cried throughout the procedure which probably made it hurt a bit more than if I'd been able to relax but the pain wasn't unbearable and it's just an injection at the end of the day. TBH - the Anti D injection afterward hurt more!
The bonus was getting to see my daughter on the scan for ages and having her sex confirmed 4 weeks earlier than most. The sonographer also gave me a stack of photo's (for free!!).

I'm not sure how much detail you want but in case you want lots...
I met with the consultant for half an hour immediately before he took me through to the scan room. We asked him loads of questions, some banal, some very direct ie. about his personal miscarriage stats etc... possible outcomes, dangers and risks to me and the baby.

The room itself had me, my husband, the consultant, 2 sonographers and a nurse for the amnio. Both my husband and I were very distressed, crying etc.. but they were lovely and passed us tissues!

After the procedure I felt tender but not in pain. I took it easy for a couple of days more out of paranoia than feeling I needed to but we were going stir crazy in the house so we did go out for dinner the night of the amnio and a pub lunch the next day so I wasn't on total bed rest.

I hope that helps and I'm sorry if I've gone on too much. I wish you both the best with yours and please do update the thread with how you get on.

Elizabethsmum - out of interest, what are dichorionic twins?!

lullabellesmummy · 25/06/2010 19:53

elizabethsmum - sorry to hear you are also going through the waiting game. When the consultant said to us he was unable to do the amnio, a small part of me was soo happy. I was/am more worried about the 1% chance of a miscarriage than the 2% chance of a chromosomal abnormality if you see what I mean.

Just out of interest, how did they calculate your risk with twins? I do hope the next few weeks are not too unbearable for you. x

EMS23 - thank you for telling us about your experience and no you haven't gone on too much. I know what you mean about it being a bonus to see your little one.

When we were there last friday for the amnio, there was me and dh, consultant, nurse, 2 sonographers but also a paediatrician (spelling?). I'm not quite sure why he was there? I've been reading way too much into it.

I am desperately hoping my uterus has grown enough to push my bowel out of the way.

How long did the discomfort last for? I have booked annual leave for the week after, I think, like you out of paranoia.

Hi ladies- EMS23 thanks for sharing your experiences - don't worry it wasn't TMI!Have been told by a couple of friends that it is not too bad. Dichorionic means the twins are in separate sacs with separate placentas etc-ie most likely non-identical and therefore that is why one is high risk and one low risk IYSWIM.

Lullabelles mum- the risks were calculated by NT measurement alone (one with high risk has an NT of 3.2mm) as our hospital does not offer combined screening with NT and bloods for twins. I did think about getting bloods done privately also at a laboratory in Leeds but on their website there is just a brief paragraph about twins which says that the results re less accurate than with a single pregnancy therefore I din't feel that it would be that much help.

TBH I am less in favour of the amnio than DH but I have to consider his feelings and so we have decided to go for it.

Like you have said really the risk is only 2% really so relatively small in actual fact- that is what I keep telling myself anyway.

I am off sick from work at the moment anyway as I have been suffering from terrible hyperemisis (had it with last pg as well but this time worse!). Dh has booked the day off and we will probably send DD to my mum's for a sleepover that night.

Sending hugs xx

EMS23 · 28/06/2010 10:09

lullabellesmum - I could feel discomfort for about 24 hours and had a nice bruise which has just faded but my paranoid mind made me move a bit carefully for about 3 days probably, even though there was no actual physical reason for it!
I've worried mostly about miscarriage and whilst it still could happen, I'm getting less worried by the day.

Elizabethsmum - lovely to have twins, I'm very envious!

Best of luck to you both anyway and do let me know how you get on

Hi all

Hope everybody is well!

Just a quick update - Had the amnio on Fri (uterus had grown enough to push my bowel out of the way). All went well and 15 mls of amniotic fluid was taken.

We got home and I noticed I had started to leak fluid from my what nots. Monitored this through the day and ending up ringing the midwife, she said to go to A & E. We got to A & E about 7 in the evening, had some bloods taken to check for infection. All came back clear, urine was clear as well. I got admitted and doc didn't come and see me until 2 in the morning. Did an internal, she could not see were fluid was coming from (which was to be expected) but took some swabs to again check for infection.

Had a scan first thing sat morning, baby is fab, amniotic sac still intact, no evidence of any bruising!!! Sooooooooo relieved!!!

No more fluid leaking since yesterday morning. Still feeling a little tender but absolutely shattered.

I still don't regret having the amnio, we do need to know and I don't know whether the fluid leaking was to be expected because I didn't dare google. But the hospital said to contact g.p/midwife if I noticed this.

Feeling very upset, vunerable at the mo, now anxiously awaiting the results of the amnio. Arrrrrggggggghhhhhh!!! Looking forward to seeing my dd in an hour. She has been staying at my parents and I've missed her soooooo much.

Sorry for the long post, sometimes feels good to write everything down. Take care all x x

Glad the Amnio went well, sorry to hear about the stress RE the fluid. I had an Amnio last Tuesday and we got the results 2 days later (all clear) but also waiting for the full report in about 10 days.

I guess because of the weekend you may have the results tomorrow? Good luck with it all.

elizabethsmum · 04/07/2010 17:17

Hi all

what a worry Lullabellesmummy- at least the wait for the results is nearly over- assuming you will get the results tomorrow??- I am due to have my amnio two weeks on fri (16th) and I think will get results on the mon. Thinking of you and keeping everything crossed xx

lullabellesmummy · 04/07/2010 21:27

DuelingFanjo - great news r.e your results! x How did you feel after your amnio? And how long did it last?

elizabethsmum - good luck with your amnio, will be thinking of you too. Let us know how you get on x

My results might be back tomorrow, but if not then it will be Tuesday. Initially, they count the chromosomes and check for any trisomys (sp?). Hoping they were fully staffed this wknd!! x x

The whole thing took 10 minutes but that was with the prep, scan and amnio bit. I determined to be as calm as possible and didn't look while he did it, though my DH did look at the screen. The consultant commented about how relaxed I had been- I did all my freaking out and worrying a week or so before.

I didn't really notice the needle going in, it was just a little bit uncomfortable but not painful.

Afterwards they made me wait 10 minutes and I felt a bit scared that by moving about I might cause some problem but it was all ok. There was no bruise and I didn't suffer any cramps.

Good luck for today - I had my Amnio on the Tuesday morning and results on Wednesday afternoon.

elizabethsmum · 05/07/2010 20:58

Hi Lullabelles mummy- just to let you know I have been thinking of you today x

lullabellesmummy · 07/07/2010 09:29

Results are all clear!!!

I was so nervous ringing up, I felt physically sick. I rang up on Monday, but they hadn't received the results. Yesterday, it was 11.45 a.m. and I just couldn't wait any longer (supposed to ring after 4 p.m) so I thought I would give them a ring on the off chance. It was strange because they'd only received the results 5 mins before I rang.

I'm back to feeling normal now (actually feel great).

Thank you all for all your kind words, advice, experiences.

lullabellesmummy · 07/07/2010 12:43

I am contemplating going out to buy a victoria sponge now!

Congratulations on your second lot of results EMS23!!!

Is it the full karotype results where you can find out the sex of the baby?

Because I have been relaxing taking it easy these past few days, I have felt the baby move so much. It has been a great reassurance! x

Hi lullabellesmummy

glad to hear its good news, can I just ask you what your nuchal fold was?

Because I had a combined test done at a private clinic they gave me a nuchal fold of 3.2 so a 1:1184 chance of downs and the nhs are giving me a 1 in 5 risk as my nuchal fold was 4.6 at 12 weeks then quad bloods at 16 weeks.

Thanks

elizabethsmum · 07/07/2010 13:24

lullabelles mummy that is fantastic news- I was nrevous for you and kept checking to see if you had updated the thread! Bring on a large fattening cake I say!!

EMS- that is fab news about your results also xx

I will keep you posted next week x

EMS23 · 07/07/2010 13:35

lullabellesmummy - yes, I'm having a girl!! Although, they did tell me the sex when I had the amnio done from the scan there but obviously it's now absolutely 100% confirmed so can get buying pink stuff!!!

elizabethsmum · 07/07/2010 13:37

How exciting EMS- CONGRATS!! Loads of lovely stuff to buy for girls x

lullabellesmummy · 07/07/2010 21:06

thank you janski31 - my nuchal fold was 2.1mm and the nasal bone was present. Based on my age alone my risk factor was 1:1300. I had the combined test and it was the bloods which increased my risk.

I have seen you post before and I'm sorry your having such a rough time. Have the NHS given you your 1:5 risk based on the nuchal fold at 12 weeks and quad bloods at 16 weeks combined? Have you been offered an appt at the Fetal Maternal Medicine Unit to discuss your results? x

elizabethsmum - thank you!!! I've had to settle with battenberg today but it is my b-day on Sunday so will have my cake then! When next week is your amnio? x

EMS23 - aww, thats fab! It is great to have it 100% confirmed because you do hear that sonographers are less sure when it comes to girls (read that on here somewhere). I've had 5 scans so far and have still not found out the sex! x

OP posts:
janski31 · 08/07/2010 09:01

Hi Lullabellesmummy

I havent been offered a appointment at the Fetal Maternal Unit as I live in Lancashire the private nuchal fold scan I had was accredited by the above, I just can't understand how my results can be so different.

I had a scan at 16 weeks which didnt show up any soft markers, spoke to screening midwife the other day and I can just tell by her voice she thinks they will find something wrong at my 20 week scan she actually said there is a 50% chance of them finding something. I was kind of hoping they wouldn't as nothing was picked up at 16 weeks but thats probably just me being optimistic..

Hope you have a nice birthday on sunday x

Ps nasal bone was also present on my scan
