Hi,

Title says it all, got up at 3am to go to the loo and there was brown spotting on wiping. It is still here this morning, although none has transferred to the pad I'm wearing. Not sure whether to go to the docs or just monitor and contact them if it gets worse. Help!

olivia is right, whether they can see everything clearly enough abdominally is down to lots of things including the equipment, but also how full your bladder is, position of your uterus and mostly your BMI. Make sure you have a full bladder to give them the best chance (easier said than done I know).

TBH the internal is really not as traumatic as you think, you are all covered up and they don't use a speculum or anything, i.e. it is nothing like a smear. Shouldn't even be uncomfortable really, so don't worry about needing one - is there anything else you would like to know about it?

Fingers crossed for good news

Rocklover · 21/06/2010 12:36

Thanks Olivia, I think that's what the dr was trying to say, that they would try external first.

I wish I would stop jumping at every twinge I get, every tummy ache, the lessening of my nausea today (although boobs still very tender). This waiting and wondering is a nightmare!

Good Luck for tomorrow Rocklover. I have just called the EPU as I have had some more just now and I am booked in for tomorrow at 3pm. Just need to find a babysitter now!

vmcd28 · 21/06/2010 15:03

Good luck to both of you. Keep us posted.
The internal is fine, but if u are as far along as you think you may not need one. Abdominal scan was fine for me at 7w.

Rocklover · 21/06/2010 15:22

I am pretty sure I should be 8 weeks along as I tested the day my period was due and had a positive straight away. So if my dates are behind at the scan I would imagine that would indicate a problem.

Good luck Julez, I really hope all is ok.

Good luck tomorrow to you both, Rocklover and Julez. I had brown spotting in both pregnancies at 8 weeks. First pregnancy was fine and DS1 is now 4.4, second pregnancy also fine, but was twins, now 2.5. Crossing fingers for you both.

Both 8 week scans done internally. Was fine though, not as uncomfortable as you might imagine!

Rocklover · 21/06/2010 15:54

Mrsx thanks for the advice. I am a little overweight (not hugely) but I guess that could affect an external scan. I was expecting an internal one anyway, not great with internals, but it doesn't seem as scary as "medical" ones iyswim.

No, the internal is fine. They cover it with gel, and only insert it a couple of inches.
And DONT assume something is wrong if baby measures smaller. I was told I ws a week earlier at first scan at 7 w, but then at the 9 w scan they moved me fwd 3days. Then they moved me another 3days at 13w scan. The scans are only rough estimates and can be up to a week out. PLUS u can get pos tests much earlier than u used to now.

DomesticG0ddess · 21/06/2010 17:59

Good luck with your scan. I have had loads of spotting in this pregnancy and had my 20 week scan a couple of weeks ago.

AmIGoingMad · 21/06/2010 19:30

Good luck to you both- I've just seen this after the other thread Rocklover.
Mine was internal scan and it was fine and in my opinion much better than any smear- totally different. Also- according to my dates I should be 8 weeks today but according to my early scan last fri they said I'm 7 today so it might jsut be down to ovulating later than usual etc so I did the test on day period due and got line straight away too.
Take care and let us know how you get off- I'm sure it'll be ok x

zippy539 · 21/06/2010 19:42

Good luck with the scan. I had the same thing at eight weeks with DS - brown spotting and then some proper red bleeding. I was convinced it was a MC but at the scan (external - this was eight years ago) they saw the heart beat. The woman doing the scanning reckoned it was implantation bleeding and told me that because she'd seen a heartbeat then there was something like a 98% change of the pregnancy progressing to term. I don't know how accurate this is but I chose to believe it and it was a huge reassurance at the time!

Good luck for tomorrow and keep us posted.

Rocklover · 21/06/2010 21:18

The spotting has turned red and I'm now very worried and have convinced myself this is it, everything's over. Trying not to panic and to keep calm, but I am now getting increasingly upset.

I am also scared of all sorts of stuff if I do miscarry, like the D & C etc. Not coping well tonight.

Rocklover - I had early scan at 7 weeks and needed internal and at 9 weeks external was ok so be prepared for both. If you haven't had internal they are nothing to worry about - not as bad as a smear or anything. Good luck tommorrow - if its reassuring I am 17w now and had brown spotting (occasional red too) from 5.5w to 12w on and off (sometimes for 4/5 days at a time). We were so worried but it was all ok. Will be thinking of you.

Tangle · 21/06/2010 22:54

Rocklover - even if you do miscarry (and that's by no means a given), you may not need a D&C. I've had two spontaneous MCs (one at 5 weeks, one at 4+2) and both times they just sorted themselves out. I kept a close eye on how I was feeling (no nasty discharge, no increasing pains, no temperature) and just had what was, to all intents and purposes, a period that was a bit late, a bit heavier and a bit more crampy. I'm not trying to say it was fine - but it wasn't nearly as bad as I feared (the worst bit was not wanting to hit the Neurofen until I'd had a -ve test - just in case it turned out to be heavy implantation bleeding...)

Fingers crossed for you for tomorrow.

Hope the scans are all ok for you.

I had heavy spotting with my now 4yo DD . . When I went for an early scan they told me they could only see an empty sac and that it was not a viable preg and I should go have a D&C . . I said I'd prefer to wait and "pass things" naturally. 2 weeks later I went for another scan and they could see a heartbeat and everything was good

It was the most horrible of 2 weeks . . Was so scary but worth it

Rocklover · 22/06/2010 09:30

Thanks for all your lovely messages. I am feeling vile this morning, nausea upset tummy, the lot. Some of it is preg related, but alot is to do with the anxiety that I am feeling.

I am desperately trying to calm down as I have to drive 20 miles to the hospital, we're planning to get there early so that I can fill my bladder at the hospital. I can't concentrate on driving if i'm desperate for a wee. This is so awful and I am having a really hard time dealing with the nerves today.

Morning Rocklover.

I too have woke up feeling vile this morning, In fact I have vomited about 4 times and only been up two hours. I have had no more spotting so I am hoping that everything is ok.

Good Luck for later. Can your DP/DH drive? I am collecting DH from work at 1pm and he will drive to the hospital I am just not up to it today. Gonna have a nic ehot bath now to calm myself down.

Will check back later on to see if you have updated.

vmcd28 · 22/06/2010 11:09

Both of you, best of luck. I've been there too, and know exactly how anxious you are feeling. I'm sure it will be gine, but either way, you will feel better after the scan, and there are plenty of us here to chat to. Lots of luck. Let us know how you go. X

Rocklover · 22/06/2010 15:27

Just to let everyone know, I had the scan and all is fine. They have even put me 2 days ahead of my dates, so I am now 8+3. The general consensus was that it is hormonal bleeding as it around the time I would be due on if not pregnant.

DP cried when he saw the heartbeat bless him, I have never seen a man so happy before, my ex DH was never that emotional.

I am keeping my fingers crossed for you Julez. xx

That's great news Rocklover.

I had spotting in three of my four pregnancies (not counting emc) at 6,7 or 8 weeks. I was told I had a small haemmorage in the uterine lining with DC4 - a very common thing. Others were decided as being one of those things.

The dread is awful isn't it? The not knowing, the what if?

Hope all is well for you too Julez.

Rocklover · 22/06/2010 15:40

It has been the worst 4 days of my life, I wouldn't wish it on anyone.

hellymelly · 22/06/2010 15:54

That is good news! I had spotting too, implantation in my case, and I though that your nausea was a really good sign so glad all is well.

5inthebackofthenet · 22/06/2010 15:54

Glad everything is ok Rocklover

vmcd28 · 22/06/2010 17:04

Woohoo, great news! The not knowing is almost worse than hearing bad news.
I'm so pleased for you. Just be prepared for more possible spotting anywhere between 11 and 13 weeks. Congratulations!
