Why do I still have symptoms?

I found out a few weeks ago that I was pg with my 5th dc. This was a huge shock but dh was quite pleased.

A few days later I started having some brownish staining which eventually turned red and I bled (very lightly, no clots or anything) for 4 days. There was no pain, cramps etc but I presumed I'd had a MC and there was only a little bleeding because I was only around 5+4.

Now I would be 7+1 and the nausea is getting worse daily. Smells make me boak and the nausea comes in waves, I can be fine and then think 'oh no'. My boobs are tingly sometimes but nothing like I remember in previous pregnancies.

I know I should take another test but I can't quite bring myself to do it.

What could be going on?

You might be or you might not be, the only way to be sure is to test. I had a similar experience and I wasn't pregnant again and suspect the sick feeling was down to stress and anxiety. The mind can play funny tricks on you.

belgo · 05/06/2010 12:16

You should do a test and see your doctor.

I think the most likely explanation is that you are still pregnant, and the bleeding you experienced was breakthrough bleeding or implantation bleeding.

If it was a miscarriage, then you should still see a doctor to make sure there are no complications.

susiecutiebananas · 05/06/2010 12:20

Sadly, after a MC or termination etc, the body does still produce the hormones associated with pregnancy. It can be such a cruel thing from mother nature... I very close friend of mine had such symptoms for almost a month after her MC. She also tested positive for almost 3 weeks.

ON a more positive note, you may actually still be pregnant Why are you not wanting to take another test? Is it because you really don't want confirmation that you have had a MC? It may be that you were possibly pg with more than one, and you have lost one, and are actually still pregnant.

My best advice is that you see your GP, and have a blood test so they can look at the levels in your blood, which will be the best indication. If they are still high, you are still PG and if they are low, or not the level they ought to be at your predicted stage of PG then you will, sadly know for sure.

I do hope some of that helps, and i really hope this is a positive outcome for you. Please, go on monday to your GP, just to stop the worries you are having. It will confirm what you think, or you may get good news.

Take care.

Thanks for all replies.

Susie that is exactly why I don't want to take the test .

I was expecting the symptoms to hang around for a bit but not to get worse. I'll arrange to see the doc/midwives (here the docs don't take much to do with pg women, they prefer to pass everyone on to the midwives) and find out once and for all what is going on.

I think I'll do another test too but if it shows + will wonder if it's a false result because of hormones.

Mother nature can be very cruel

You need to go the the dr and get referred for an early pregnancy scan so you can know either way. Hope all goes well x

susiecutiebananas · 05/06/2010 13:47

moistvonlipwig My other suggestion was to go to the early pregnancy clinic and have a scan. If sadly it is a MC, you need to check everything has gone

It really truly may be implantation bleeding too. I had what i thought was an actual whole period albeit a 3 day period with DD, only to discover at the early preg dating scan that it cant have been a period as the dates in no way matched up. It was just a very odd implantation bleed!

You will wonder if you take a home test, if its a false + which is why it really will be better not to do a test, but to go for a scan, and have the blood test taken, or actually the other way round if you'd prefer.

I really do hope you get some answer very soon, go on monday morning if you can. My hospital has an early pg clinic and you can just turn up, especially if you have had a + test, then bleeding, they really should do a scan there and then.

Will be thinking of you. Good luck with what ever you decide to do. Much love. x

japhrimel · 05/06/2010 13:50

You need to do a test and see the doctor for an EPAU referral (most won't accept you the first time without a referral).

Light bleeding suggests that it either wasn't a miscarriage or that it wasn't complete. You would expect it to be as least as heavy as a normal period.

vmcd28 · 05/06/2010 15:07

NO, dont do a test - cos it may give a positive result, even if you miscarried. I got positive tests for 2 weeks after a D&C, so I knew for SURE I wasnt pregnant any more. The hormones could still be there, and you dont want a false positive - that might be even more upsetting for you. Go to your early pregnancy unit on Monday morning, and theyll scan you.
Hopefully it's good news. Let us know how you get on x

You lot are great, you really are.

We don't have an EPAU within 200 miles (the joys of the Highlands)but one of our midwives does scanning so she might be willing to have a look for me, will go and see her on Monday and in the meantime try not to throw up.

Honestly the nausea is awful.

Again, not wanting to get your hopes up, but if you had a complete miscarriage that early on, I doubt you would feel REALLY unwell nearly two weeks later. My symptoms tapered off after the MC, and I felt "normal" even when I was still getting positive pg tests. Hmm. SO, IMO you are either still pregnant or you did not have a complete MC - both reasons to get scanned as soon as possible. Dont take no for an answer. You have a right to know whats going on. x

susiecutiebananas · 06/06/2010 01:15

I've been thinking about you all day today. I hope you are ok, the nausea not so bad.
Again, without wanting to get your hopes up,don't forget the possibility that you may have been pg with more than one and lost one at this stage & still be pg. This is far more common than people realise.

I really will be thinking of you on monday- if you can bare to, could you let us know how you get on.

Also, again, if the scan is not possible, then the MW or GP can take blood tests to check for the correct rise in pg hormones- the same detected in a pg test. They may ask to repeat it after a few days to have a comparison, though, there are 'set' levels for specific times in pregnancy especially early pregnancy.

I really will keep my fingers crossed for you, and will think of you until you can post again, what ever the news. x

Maybee · 06/06/2010 01:24

Get it checked out asap and try not to be too anxious its out of your hands now. Ireally hope everything is ok x

belgo · 06/06/2010 08:10

Good luck for tomorrow. Let us know how you get on.

I agree with vmcd28, I think it highly unlikely you would have developed nausea if your HCG levels are dropping. Lots of people bleed when their period is due. When I miscarried my sickness disappeared and I was between 6-7 weeks. I hope it is good news for you today.

belgo · 07/06/2010 16:22

ANy news?

MoistvonLipwig · 07/06/2010 18:11

Hi everyone, thanks for thinking of me.

I went up to the hospital but the scanning midwife wasn't in but I have an appt for Wendnesday.

The midwife I spoke to didn't sound hopeful . So I guess I just have to hang on until Weds.

I spent most of the afternoon trying not to retch!

vmcd28 · 07/06/2010 18:51

For goodness sake, so you've to wait two more days? Ugh. Why didn't she sound hopeful?

belgo · 07/06/2010 19:52

oh no two more days of waiting for you.

Take care.

Maybee · 07/06/2010 20:16

Good luck and try to stay calm Moistvon

It is a huge pain waiting.

The midwife just seemed non commital. I could still be pg but it could also be that I've mc'd.

Nausea still hanging in there and now boobs ache...

vmcd28 · 07/06/2010 21:06

What does yr instinct tell you? Cos all the signs are positive, really.
I got neg pg tests for three days before my positive, but I knew I was pregnant and actually got annoyed that the tsts were neg. I just knew.

susiecutiebananas · 08/06/2010 14:23

ML I'm pleased you went up to the hospital. I'm sorry you got such non committal advice though. The problem is, he/she has to be really, as without a scan available, if they were to say yes you are still pg, or no your not, yet opposite turns out, its just professionally wrong. Crappy for you, I know, and Im sorry.

The thing is, your symptoms are increasing, not decreasing, which, as much as, they can hang around for a while after a MC, it is unusual for them to keep increasing, with new ones.

As i've said a couple of times, you really may have had more than one in there, and lost it, and are still pg. It is very possible, and not uncommon. I'm very surprised the MW didn't do a blood test to check your HCG count as that can be re tested again in a day or two, to see if it is rising, or falling. Which is a sure sign, either way.

I have been thinking about you. I hope that on wednesday, you can get some descent answers. You could go to your GP this afternoon and ask for a blood test, that could be back by tomorrow. especially as if you have sadly had a MC, you may , just may need a D&C. Which would make the blood test a priority... if you push it with them
