Pain on the right side - moving round now to just below my breast

For the past 2 weeks I have had continuous pain around my rib case on the right side. Just assumed it was down to a really bad cough I had recently and maybe it has some internal brusing. Yesterday the pain got so bad, I couldn't walk properly and it was quite painful when I breathed. The right side of my abdomenal has started to hurt too. Not sure whether to go hospital to have it checked out or not.

Anyone has similar experience?

No similar experience but am a great believer in getting checked out if you are worried, you could always ring them and explain and see what they suggest

theyoungvisiter · 24/05/2010 13:28

Don't be scared but DO get it checked asap.

It's very likely just rib strain due to your expanding girth but it could be a symptom of pre-eclampsia.

Please make sure they take it seriously at the hospital, and check your blood pressure and urine. They can also do blood tests to check your liver function.

How many weeks are you?

hollyoaks · 24/05/2010 13:35

I have had very similar pain recently. I had my bloods taken and liver function tests as it can be a sign of gall stones.

Fortunately everything came back normal and it was put down to internal bruising and rib strain as I was growing. I still have regular pain in that region still but find a warm bath helps to ease it. It's also nowhere near as bad now lo has dropped and I've gone on ML.

Hope you get it resolved soon.

I'm 34 weeks tomorrow.

Thats just it im worried if i go in to hospital they will just tell me its growing pain and just send me home.

See your gp who should perform blood tests to reassure you. Unfortunately it may just be something you have to live with for the next few weeks.

theyoungvisiter · 24/05/2010 13:41

They won't (or at least they shouldn't)

Right rib pain is a known symptom of pre-eclampsia.

I'm sure they won't try to fob you off, but if they do, tell them that you've read on the internet that it can be a symptom of pre-eclampsia and that you are seriously stressed and want to be tested to reassure you (little bit of hysteria goes a long way ).

Have you had any of the following:

swelling
visual disturbances (spots/flashing lights in your vision)
headaches
dizzyness

?

If so, worth mentioning them at the same time as they could be part of a bigger picture.

Hopefully it's nothing (and it probably is) but they absolutely must check you out, especially if you are in such pain, it's not nice to be in pain and concerned.

theyoungvisiter · 24/05/2010 13:45

BTW I wouldn't go to your GP - I'd ring your MW and ask if you can come into the maternity day unit or whatever the equivalent is in your hospital.

Much quicker, and you are more likely to get someone who knows the score.

I have suffered from this for 2 months now. Its an awful pain and no one really knows what it is. I dont know how to paste a previous link but i have had many discussions about it on this if you can find them. My pain is awful at times, hard to stand for too long, sit, sleep you name it. I would go to get monitored to eliminate the nasties but if you are clear then they really dont offer any help except codeine which i have tried to avoid taking.

As of yesterday, i dont want to speak too soon but it has eased off a bit so fingers crossed (36 wks). I am also trying reflexology tomorrow which supposedly might help

bubs1 · 24/05/2010 14:51

Sorry i should say that this is my experience - please go get checked out in case its anything else.

theyoungvisiter · 24/05/2010 14:52

bubs1 - posting a link is really easy, you just paste the link in your message and put on one side and on the other.

That turns it into a clickable link.

theyoungvisiter · 24/05/2010 14:53

"you just paste the link in your message and put on one side and on the other."

I meant to add - only without any spaces.

I had horrible pain on my left side over my ribs about 4 weeks ago, around 37 weeks. Went to my GP. Like you I'd had a horrible chesty cough and he said the pain was internal bruising. BUT he did check my bp and all the other pre-ec things so do get checked.

countrybump · 24/05/2010 15:37

I had pain similar to what you describe, started as a nagging pain, then got to the point where I was bent double and nothing would stop it, and then suddenly it got a bit better again so I stopped worrying and only mentioned it on my next routine MW check. It turned out to be pre-eclampsia and I was sent straight to hospital.

I'd call your midwife today, just to get checked over and put your mind at rest. They will take it seriously.

oldmum42 · 24/05/2010 18:26

Could be Gall bladder. Very common in women, very common in pregnancym - higher levels of hormones can cause your non-symptomatic gall stone to start causing pain.

Is it worse after a fatty meal? Maybe an hour or so after eating?

Obviously this needs checked out, to be on the safe side as regards this or the other serious possible causes mentioned by other posters.

theyoungvisiter · 24/05/2010 20:42

Did you get it checked Kat?

Hoping all ok.

kat2010 · 27/05/2010 14:32

Hi theyoungvisiter

Yes I did get it checked out. Went to hospital Monday afternoon and was told I had to stay in to be monitored. I was there for two nights and had a couple of scans done -they both came back normal which was a relief. Doctor said it seems like it is muscular pain so have prescribed me painkillers and said if they dont work and the pain continues I will have to go back to hospital.

I have a feeling I might have a fractured rib because thats where the pain seems to be. Midwife said the growing uterus could have caused the fracture or some internal bruising.
