35+ weeks and what feels like really bad period pains, any ideas why?

Will be 36 weeks on Sunday and in the last couple of days have had what feels like period pains. They feel quite strong, I feel just as if my period is about tp start, if I wasn't as hugely pregnant as I am would be heading to the loo expecting period to have arrived. Also, and will apologise in advance for TMI but have a bit of a sensitive tummy, not quite diarorhea(sp?) but pooing loads.
I feel so uncomfortable but don't know if baby is just lying in a funny way.
Any ideas?

Im not very good at this but could it be braxton hicks, i never had these with ds so wouldnt know but it sounds similar to early start in labour so maybe?

princessmel · 06/05/2010 19:57

Sounds like early labour to me.

I'd keep an eye on it and maybe see a midwife tomorrow?

Nymphadora · 06/05/2010 19:58

Get it checked out in case of early labour. Possibly braxton hicks but it things are sensitive & diarhorrea then it could be more

Tobermory · 06/05/2010 19:58

This is Dc2 but had no labour with DD1, failed induction and section so really have no clue- also forgotten all I learned at NCT classes.

Braxton hicks don't feel like period pain. With bh your bump goes realy hard and tight, they can last for about a minute then your bump goes soft again.

I had millions with ds2!!!

dinkystinky · 06/05/2010 20:01

Sounds like early labour to me. Do the pains ease if you move around/have a bath - if they do, likely to be braxton hicks. If they dont but progress, they may well be contractions. I was induced with DS1 but went into spontaneous labour with DS2 a week or so before his due date and also had no idea what to expect, but it was fine and a hell of a lot easier than the first birth- good luck.

princessmel · 06/05/2010 20:01

But with cx your bump goes hard too...I am confusing you!! sorry!!

what I'm trying to say is that bh don't feel like period pain.

Tobermory · 06/05/2010 20:05

They're sporadic, a couple of hours ago v intense, then a lull of nothing apart from bump feeling v uncomfortable and low. Right now my bump is tingly almost, not quite painful but def wierd feeling and then bump tightening.

Spoke too soon. Period pains back now started at sides the spread across bump then tightening, possibly eased a bit by movement?

They sound like contractions to me Tobermory - have something to eat and just try to relax. They may die down or may intensify - you never know!

MrsJamin · 06/05/2010 20:13

def sounds like early labour, I had similar period pains at 35+6 - 2 and a half hours later I had DS2! Make sure your bag is packed - mine wasn't!

Tobermory · 06/05/2010 20:16

Oh crap.

Am quite scared now.

Right the following are prob v silly questions but i have ot ask....

What to do next?!!

If these are contractions might they simply die down to nothing?

Do i need to sort childcare for DD1 tonight?

No need to be scared! how fast was your labour for DD1? I'd check out your childcare options for her. Ring your labour ward and talk through your symptoms. Try to relax, take a nice warm bath...

Tobermory · 06/05/2010 20:23

No labour for DD1.

Had a failed induction and then csection so no idea what this whole labour thing and contractions are all about!!

Dont be scared Tobermory. How often are the contractions and how long are they lasting for? Are they still pretty irregular? If so, just try and relax and carry on as normal. If you need to relax, go for a nice relaxing bath and try not to worry.

It is worth making sure that you have childcare on standby for the next few weeks anyway just in case.

The contractions may die down to nothing - labour can be stop start that way. If they start getting stronger and longer, just concentrate on breathing through them and try and conserve your energy.

Is your bag packed with your hospital notes on top? If not, make sure it is packed now so you're not worrying about that later on if you do need to go in to see the midwives.

You'll be fine.

MrsMiamla · 06/05/2010 20:24

don't be scared. What's the plan for DD1? Its definitely worth phoning them and having them on standby at least. Do you have someone there with you? (other than DD1 obviously!)

where were you hoping to give birth? home or hospital? probably best to give the hospital a call anyway and let them know what's happening

Pack your bag if you haven't already, have something to eat and try and relax if you can

I'll virtually hold your hand and be here as long as I can if it'll help

MrsMiamla · 06/05/2010 20:26

x post with others but at least we're all telling you similar things!

Things may carry on like this (on and off) for a couple of weeks, or you might have a baby by this time tomorrow so that's why its best to be prepared!

Tobermory · 06/05/2010 20:27

My real childcare is on holiday till tomorrow , arranged so she would def be around for the birth! Have text her she says nothing is allowed to happen till she gets back tomorrow! Other option is IL though further away so needs a bit fo forward planning.

Going to sort bag and notes.

Call your midwife, you're still only 35 weeks and while that sounds all fine, it may not be. You sound like you're contracting to me. My dd was born at 36 weeks and spent a week in special care, with tubes in her nose and mouth and needles in her hand. She also couldn't tolerate milk and had to be tube fed a glucose solution.

Don't mess about, call them and get in to get checked tonight asap.

dinkystinky · 06/05/2010 20:30

Its sods law Tobermory - our arranged childcare was on holiday too when DS2 arrived. Do you know your neighbours well? Maybe worth just popping round (or getting DP to pop round) to see if they'd be able to look after DD for a little bit if need be while the ILs make their way there to look after her and warn ILs they may be needed at some point possibly? Our back up plans were my sister (other side of London) and our neighbours if need be - fortunately my waters went first before contractions started with DS2 so knew to call sis immediately and DH (as would have to have gone in to be monitored at some point anyway if contractions hadnt kicked in) and DS2 arrived about 4 hours later.

MrsJamin · 06/05/2010 20:48

JodieO - I don't think that's what tobermory needs to hear! My DS2 was born at 35+6 and was absolutely healthy from the get go.

JodieO · 06/05/2010 20:50

I'm not trying to worry her! Just telling what could happen as she is still only 35 weeks. As I said, it's not worth the risking of waiting, just get in and be seen. My dd also had breathing problems due to it. While many babies will be fine at 35 weeks, many also won't be and not hearing about it won't change that fact! Better to be safe imo.

MrsMiamla · 06/05/2010 21:01

how you getting on?
