Daft question about sleeping positions

I'm sure this is a completely daft question, but I'm getting a bit anxious in that paranoid-pregnancy way.... I'm 19 weeks and I'm worried that the position I end up sleeping in might hurt the baby. My default sleeping position has always been on my front. Although I haven't really got a bump yet, this is now uncomfortable. So I'm trying not to do it and to sleep on my side instead. But I seem to end up on my front, which hurts and wakes me up and then I change position. And go back to sleep and then end up on my front again, and so on... I'm going to try using a pillow as support or look into one of those maternity bolster cushion thingies (any recommendations?). But until I get this sorted out, I'm worried that by ending up on my front I'm squashing the baby and harming it. DH says this is bonkers. But I'm just worried! BTW - haven't really felt the baby move yet (first pregnancy) so can't use that as a form of reassurance. I am just being daft, aren't I??

You can't squash your baby by sleeping on your front, it's very well protected and cushioned in there - the only thing it will do is make you uncomfortable. Please don't worry.

cardamomginger · 03/05/2010 23:15

Thanks guys! Off to give the pillow option a try - night night

I'm 28+ and I'm sleeping on both sides, my tummy and my back - wherever I can get it! Baby kicks pretty much 24/7 - he's fine!

skihorse · 04/05/2010 06:42

Btw - beware the pillow - husbands & boyfriends are NOTORIOUS for stealing them! You will wake up slightly uncomfortable - glance over and see your beloved wrapped around your pillow with an angelic smile upon his face!

Kity · 04/05/2010 08:12

Argos do a special pregnancy pillow set which has a v pillow eye mask and a foam wedge in it, the wedge it the best thing Ive ever had especially as bump gets bigger as it supports it and stops you rolling over. Mine has helped me and friends through many a pregnancy! well worth the money

Shaz10 · 04/05/2010 08:22

By the end I had the wedge under my bump - lovely!

PS it took 8 months before sleeping on my tummy was comfortable again.

youremindmeofthebabe · 04/05/2010 08:47

pillow between the legs and one of those ones filled with tiny polysterene balls under the bump.

Worked for me!

cardamomginger · 04/05/2010 09:19

Thanks for the reassurance and the tips guys - tried a normal pillow last night and slept SO much better. And yes, DH did say that he wanted to steal it....

I agree with skihorse - husbands are evil ;-)

I have also been worrying about sleeping on my back - and find the wrapping legs around a pillow definitely helps.

kapars · 04/05/2010 16:10

I totally recommend the DReam Genii pillow you can get from Mothercare. It's fantastic!

ronx · 04/05/2010 16:13

I'm still sleeping on my front at 23 weeks .

mum2oneloudbaby · 04/05/2010 16:39

agree with kapars used it in pg1 and just started using it in pg2. Bit pricey but worth every penny, good for feeding afterwards as well.

sazziej · 04/05/2010 17:21

I can also recommend Dream Geni pillow - I've had mine about 3 weeks and I'm sleeping so much better.... I usually sleep on my front but that was proving too uncomfortable.

How do you all manage turning over with a pillow? I've got one of those small wedge ones from Mothercare and swap that over ok, but if I start the night with a pillow between my legs I can almost guarantee that at some point, usually when turning over for the 89th time I'll get fed up of wrestling with it and give it up as a bad job! Any advice greatly appreciated.

I'm 30 + 1 btw.

Shaz10 · 04/05/2010 22:25

Turning over was always a long yet organised system for me. First I would wake up with excruciating pain in the hip I was lying on. Then I would remove the pillow I had under my back and put it on the other side. Then I would remove the pillow I was hugging/putting under my bump and swap sides. Then would come manoeuvres reminiscent of the Queen Mary to shift my mahoosive body to the opposite side. Pillows would be repositioned behind back and under bump.

Then I would realise I needed the toilet and have to start again.

cardamomginger · 04/05/2010 22:38

Is it an approved option to kick DH out of bed when it all starts getting to complicated and have two pillows, one in readiness on each side? Is this an unreasonable request????

OP posts:
skihorse · 06/05/2010 05:41

carda Totally reasonable. I love my fella very much, but Tuesday night slept with my hand against his chest to push him away as he kept trying to cuddle up to me. Is he insane? Did I ask to be cuddled?

hippopo · 06/05/2010 09:49

I sleep with a pillow each side of me and generally switch from left to right side during the night either lying on the pilliow infront of my or leaning on the pillow behind which means I am not on back. Luckily we have a superking bed so there is a lot of move.

Also got a really large long pillow from Mothercare that is almost as tall as me that we have cristened Peter for some reason ! Which I have only found useful when lying down watching TV sort of hugging it and resting on it at same time.

I woke up early this morning and was on my back and it felt very uncomfortable like the little fella was resting on all my internal organs so had to go on all fours to get everything to drop down again then felt ok!!

cardamomginger · 06/05/2010 10:38

Hello, I always sleep on my front so while i was preg i used to spend most of the night rotating pillows (wedge, v shaped and normal pillows) as i would soon be uncomfortable again. I used to have a pillow tucked under my bump so that i couldnt fully lie on my front but kind of lift my leg up and rest my knee on the pillow as well so i was half way between on my side and on my front.

Athrawes · 07/05/2010 10:45

My long pillow is called Roger and husband is most jealous of him

MrsSenior · 07/05/2010 15:48

I want a roger!

IloveJackWhite · 14/05/2010 15:46

I also recommend the dreamgenii, I used it from about 15 weeks, as I was worried about being on my front/back, and it helps keep you on your left (which is good for baby to get into a good position for birth )

It was really comfy and I never had any problem with sleep - DH wasn't interested in nicking it either as it's trapped under you to support your back as well as bump and hips

Can use it for BF too...

Hope you get some good sleep v soon! x

ReeceM · 15/05/2010 21:54

The dreamgenii is a fab solution to your problem as it inhibits your body from rolling onto your front, and gives great support to your legs and back when using the 'sausage' part of the pillow.
Try not to worry as other people have said your baby is very well protected in there. Hope you can stay comfortable!
