Hi - wondered if anyone has ideas on how not to put on too much weight as am already overweight and keen not to make added complications? Also anyone due in winter and want to start a supportive thread for high BMI-ers?

I am literally just pregnant - period was due two days ago. Hoping it all goes okay.

Hi yellow flowers, I have a BMI of 35 and am also worried about putting on lots of weight as I struggle with my size as it is (am an 18) and go up and down all the time.
Am also due in the Winter - November, so would love to join your thread.
Congratulations to you!

yellowflowers · 08/04/2010 15:24

Try going to slimming world. I know it sounds like a diet but the consultants (around here) are good at keeping you on track in terms of weight loss/maintenance. The diet plan is really good and it might help, it's not necessarily a diet as such - just healthy eating.

Rockbird · 08/04/2010 18:28

Fingers crossed that'll be me soon as well. Was the same with dd, BMI of 42. Put on 1.5 stone with her, was lighter than at the start the day after I gave birth. In my experience (of one!) you tend to put on less weight if you're bigger to start with. Anyone I've ever heard of putting 4 and 5 stone on tend to be about 7 stone to start with.

Congratulations

piprabbit · 08/04/2010 18:29

I have a v.high BMI and did not put on very much weight with either pregnancy - only about 1 stone each time (and babies were both 8lb plus) I think I found it easier to eat healthily when pregnany - especially as I went right off chocolate.

Good luck to you all.

waitingimpatiently · 08/04/2010 18:31

Rockbird - I hope so. Haha my BMI was about 29 (god knows what it is at the moment) but I know a skinny minnie who is recently pregnant and I hope she gains lots of weight so she knows what it's like to be a fatty. Hehe

3LegsandNoTail · 08/04/2010 18:51

Hi

This is me too. In my previous two pregancies my BMI has also been high - 34 and 36. I think it's probably around 39 now. I've actually lost weight with each one - and then obviously put it all back on again . I have had complications with both, but neither of them due to BMI according to the consultant so I'm hoping to avoid any this time too.

Also due early dec I think (slightly about dates)

llareggub · 08/04/2010 19:03

I had gestational diabetes so I had to follow a very strict diabetic diet from about 16 weeks. 2 weeks after the birth I was 2 sizes smaller than my pre-pregnancy size and 1 year on I am 5 sizes smaller.

I also exercised every day during pregnancy and started up again after my 6 week check. I started with the wii fit, then after christmas started the BUPA couch to 5K running programme. I now run 5K three times a week, swim twice a week and feel so much better for it.

I don't know how much weight I gained but at the beginning of my pregnancy they had to the large cuff when taking my blood pressure. At the end I was in the normal cuff.

I didn't set out to lose weight but set out to control my blood sugar. I did have a high BMI but I'm not sure what it was, but I was a size 20. I'm now a 12.

Congratulations on your pregnancy!

yellowflowers · 09/04/2010 12:13

hi llareggub - I think I remember you from ttc boards. Sorry you had GD.

I would very much like to be lighter post birth than I am now - I am at the biggest I have ever been at the moment. One good sign is I have gone off food. I don't mind eating, but when I am hungry I can't think of anything that appeals to me.

Any ideas what I can have to snack on when hungry to stop feeling sick? I was eating cashews but doctor told me not to have too many nuts. Ginger biscuits work but obviously are still biscuits.

Sorry not much help. I found the only thing that stopped me feeling sick was full sugar lemonade. But then I was eating very little so it balanced out I guess.

toja555 · 09/04/2010 13:31

May I join you too? I have BMI of 33 and I am 10 weeks preggie with No.2. I have a very miserable history of weight gain with No.1 - I gained 5 stones and my BMI was already 29 before the first pregnancy, basically I gained from 88kg to 118kg (omg!). I remember myself eating only choco muffins during the last month of the first pregnancy... now I cannot look at muffins at all!

In this pregnancy I am trying to keep myself on healthy diet, i.e. healthy eating and hoping to gain not more than 1 stone...

parkj83 · 09/04/2010 13:34

I found shredded wheat, or fruit and fibre good to nibble on between meals.

I lost a good 3kg in the 1st trimester, but I have conflicting scales between my doctor (down 2kg), chiro (down 1kg), and hospital (down 3kg), so not quite sure who to believe (leaning towards hospital, as they were digital)

yellowflowers · 09/04/2010 13:44

Hello both.

toja55 - 118 is nearly what I am now - will be so unhealthy if I gain more.

Great idea parkj83 - I will get some to keep in my handbag in a bag.

My BMI with DC3 was about 36. I was doing a healthy eating weight loss club when I found out and the leader said I was fine to carry on. It's not strictly a diet you just make sure you eat the reccommended 5 fruit and veg a day and stick within the guidelines for fish, meat and protein etc. Once you have eaten within your points you don't have room to stuff yourself with chocs. I lost over 45lbs throughout the pregnancy and I had gestational diabetes towards the end.
My only critic was my practice nurse who was worried that for 3 months my weight went down steadily. She wouldn't take it that I had enough excess weight to live on and produce a healthy baby. MW and Docs were delighted with my weight loss tho.

For morning sickness I tried ginger biscuits but I can't stand them even though they work. Ask your doc to prescribe ginger capsules or try a ginger tea. Personally I eat dry crackers and they help. I also never have a warm drink on its own as it just sloshed in my stomach leaving me feeling I was on a rollercoaster.

I have high BMI (cannot remember exactly) and especially last time, when I was bigger, I followed pretty much a diebetic diet 'just incase'. Don't 'diet', don't deny yourself anything (I got rightly ticked off for ketons in my wee as I hadn't eaten enough before my consultant appointment) just eat healthy as you can. As a bonus I didn't put on a lb so lost 1 1/2 stone overnight after DS - I must stress I didn't diet, just ate healthy. Cut out as much proccessed as you can (don't forget hams etc., not just ready meals and pre made sauces) and go wholemeal (white pasta/bread honestly tastes awful after you get used to wholemeal). Swap mash potatoes for new potatoes. If you eat as basic as you can it makes it easier to keep track. Don't underestimate the crapness of ready made sandwiches and salads even. Congratulations by the way!

ASecretLemonadeDrinker · 09/04/2010 15:40

Another thing I find useful as I go through phases of liking cola etc., is buy some fizzy water and sugar free juice(s). OJ and fizzy water pretty much tastes like Tango

LoveJules3 · 09/04/2010 15:53

Congratulations!
I had high bmi with my 3rd, who's now 6m. I didn't put on any weight till i was 32w (not sure how!) and even then only gained 12lb. They kept giving me scans as they were worried he wasn't growing properly. He was 9lb 1oz born and by the time he was 3w i'd lost another stone on top of 'baby' weight! I've since put it back on but am keeping my fingers crossed i'll be able to loose it again.
The hosp will give you all the tests under the sun, but as long as you and bubs are well then don't worry. I gained 2st 6 with dd1, 18lb with dd2, then 12lb with ds1. Dying to weigh what i did before dd1!!!!!
Slimming world is a good plan to follow, but if you eat healthily and watch your carb intake you should be fine. Carbs should only be 1/5 of your plate, 2/5 protien, and the rest veg. My nutritionist friend told me that v. recently, wish she'd told me years ago!

yellowflowers · 09/04/2010 16:31

that is all so helpful - thank you. If anyone wants to we can stay on here and encourage each other. Have only had 3 ginger nuts today but a whole lot of bread because when I went out to look for lunch (didn't have time to make at home this morning) everything turned my stomach except bread. Will buy fruit and fibre tomorrow.

I found last time that by 10.30am I was ravenous so made sure I always had an apple or orange or little yogurt to eat. It got so bad I would nearly faint. I felt a bit of a pig snacking but when you are pregnany you need snacks.
Being pregnant over summer opens up lots of fresh snacks, fruit is so much nicer when it is warm.

parkj83 · 09/04/2010 21:46

Sounds like a plan yellowflowers x

I'm now 17 weeks, but still get the odd sick-y moments.

But I def know how you feel about not feeling like stuff.

yellowflowers · 15/04/2010 11:54

how you all doing? I am finding it quite easy to eat weel because I have no appetite so am just making myself eat meals and not wanting to snack really
