Hi - wondered if anyone has ideas on how not to put on too much weight as am already overweight and keen not to make added complications? Also anyone due in winter and want to start a supportive thread for high BMI-ers?

I am literally just pregnant - period was due two days ago. Hoping it all goes okay.

By BMI was 35 when I first found out that I was pregnant with my now 13 wk old ds.

I think it's true that if you are on the heavy side then you tend to put on less. I was a stone lighter just after I'd given birth than I was at 4 wks preg without really trying to cut down Blush
I would say try and get as fit as you can now. I found walking around very difficult from 36 wks and had lots of aches and pains that I'm sure I wouldn't have had if I'd been fitter.

I was already losing weight when I became pregnant (had problems concieving and was advised to lose weight) - At my biggest I had a BMI of 53.

My BMI at my booking in appointment was 41.

On the same day on the Wii it was 40.26 (so I know my Wii is a little kind because I don't wear clothes when I do the weigh in Blush ).

I was really disappointed that my booking in BMI was taken a couple of days after Christmas, as I was below 40 on the Wii earlier in december and very quickly in January. So my offical beginning of pregnancy weight is a bit high because of too many Christmas second helpings .

I lost weight steadily in January, and got down to 38.38 in the first week of February, though I have put on a couple of pounds in the last couple of weeks. This morning on the Wii my BMI was 38.97 and it has been sitting about there the last few days.

I don't think that I've yet hit the tipping point of increasing weight till the baby is term. The couple of pounds that I've put on I think are related to me comfort eating a bit more whilst I had morning, noon and night sickness, and not quitting it as soon as I was keeping more meals down. Although I haven't yet stopped being sick at 18 weeks, it isn't happening enough to justify eating cream eggs.

I also haven't been as active the last few weeks as I've been exhausted and napping a lot.

So my goal is to get my healthy eating and exercise back on track and see what that does to my weight. I know that I'm bound to put on weight eventually, but if I'm eating healthily it should largely be genuine pregnancy weight that should go after the birth.

I'm hoping not to suffer from some of the complications of being big during pregnancy because I'm not eating to maintain a BMI of 41/38. So hopefully blood sugars etc will be more normal as long as my DH stops bringing creme eggs into the house and I stop eating them

Obviously don't go on a crash diet during pregnancy and get advice from midwives/GP etc. I think mine were okay with me sticking to what I was doing before I got pregnant because I had been doing it for a year and my body is used to it - eating no less junk food, smaller portions, eating more fruit/veg/wholemeal etc and gentle exercise. It would have been ridiculous to say I should start eating unhealthily again just to maintain my current weight.

I did worry that I wasn't eating enough when I had a lot of sickness though, so made a point of eating a little more (now have to drop that habit as sickness isn't everyday anymore).

Hiya, can i join in? I'm a fellow pregnant fatty! ;-)
I'm 16 weeks on my second pregnancy, and have a BMI of 35. Had a BMI of 41 with first DD who is now 3 and have been working really hard to lose weight for the last 12 months, so was a little nervous about getting pg again when I was doing so well!
I def agree that you tend not to put so much weight on when you're quite big to start with. It helped that with 1st pg and this one Ive had terrible sickness. Have put about 4 pound on so far this time, which isnt bad considering all i could bear to eat for a few weeks was pizza and Mcdonalds!! Blush Just to make things worse, i suffered a threatened miscarriage in first pg so was told not to do any exercise that involves jumping around for the first 3 months. Although tbh I never felt well enough to do any anyway!
Have just started back with Body Pump and Aqua aerobics so am hoping this will help.
I remember with pg1 that once i got past around 20 weeks, i would feel really hungry, but then find I couldn't eat much before feeling uncomfortably full. My portion sizes were far smaller than before i got pg. Am hoping I feel the same this time round.
Hope everyone's sickness etc is ok and we're all having a good day!

It's nice to know were all in the same boat with high bmi, and already feeling less nervous knowing there are other lovely ladies out there, same we couldn't all meet face to face!!!!!! I'm quite lucky tho, as I am the receptionist at the antenatal clinic in a hospital, so have midwives and consultants round me everyday, but it very embarrassing as I know there all saying "god she is going to be hug""Blush

Hey I know this post is old but I'm worried and stressed out. I'm about 9 weeks pregnant with my second and my bmi is 31 I feel so ashamed and scared they won't be able to scan me properly 😭 I know I'm probably being irrational but I can't help but feel horrible about my self. Did everyone's scans go okay with having high bmi?

Smile03 · 26/11/2020 08:42

Hey,
Don’t stress my BMI was 31 at the start i’m now 15 weeks and down to 27 partly due to sickness and partly due to only eating when I actually need food. I’m hopeful to lose a tiny bit more weight to get me into the healthy 25 but am not stressing myself over it.

mamababy1955555 · 26/11/2020 11:22

My BMI was 36 at the start of my first pregnancy and it's currently 41 (9 weeks pregnant, down from 43 already). Obviously it's not ideal to be overweight and of course there are risks but plenty of women with high BMI have healthy pregnancies and babies. I lost 60lbs in my last pregnancy and I've lost 20lbs so far in this one. You will probably lose weight - it's really hard not to in my experience. I had a reassurance scan 3 weeks ago and they could see my baby just fine. Don't let yourself feel bad. There's enough about pregnancy that makes you feel like "just a body." I wish I hadn't let my weight make me feel bad or "less than" in my first pregnancy. Pregnancy is hard work whoever you are and you have just as much right to respectful care as anyone else.

mamababy1955555 · 26/11/2020 11:24

To clarify, my first pregnancy was 4 years ago, this is my second!

Hello @LLLTB don't stress, my bmi is 35 and had my scan this morning, no probs with viewing- the only prob was baby being stubborn and keeping his/her back to us 😂
Smiling89 · 26/11/2020 15:10

I have a bmi over 40 at booking now 37 weeks. I've had no problems with scans and without trying at all I have actually lost 11lbs since before pregnancy. Baby is growing normally.

I just got full quicker than normal, and my thyroid levels went up by 4 during this pregnancy so it's just dropped off despite eating crap!

I hope your pregnancy goes well too x
