7+3 at the moment and putting on weight but I'm not kidding myself that it's anything other than good ol' fat!

When can I start blaming it on the baby?

I def started noticing a difference between fat and actual baby at about 14-15 weeks but it can vary hugely.

sowhathappensnow · 15/03/2010 21:54

Erm 27 weeks or so in my case!

VKschmeekay · 15/03/2010 22:02

I was 6 months. I forget weeks now - too long ago! I do remember at 5mths I was still wearing a size 10 suit to work...

I miss those smaller days!

kawaiiko · 15/03/2010 22:07

Erk! This is not helping!

I said it can vary hugely! Well im 22 weeks now and there is no mistaking it for fat. Ive been wearing maternity jeans since about 16 weeks and have now started to buy maternity tops or regular tops which are long.
Im usually a size 8 so not sure if being slim means showing earlier?

ChunkyPickle · 15/03/2010 22:47

20 weeks here - but I'm overweight so although I can tell by the shape, most people probably just see a fat girl...

I could feel the bump from about 14 weeks, and very soon after that I could see a dramatic shape change in the mirror (top bit of my stomach is poking out a lot - if I look down I can't see my belly button any more!)

BuongiornoPrincipessa · 15/03/2010 23:06

I'm 30 wks with my first, normally a size 10 - was bloated at the beginning so felt fatter than normal, but nobody else could see any difference, no matter how much I tried to stick my belly out! Didn't really have a noticeable baby bump til about 18 weeks.

My boobs grew 3 cup sizes by 12 weeks though!

ShowOfHands · 15/03/2010 23:08

Oh God, my colleagues were asking at 8/9 weeks. I was slim, fit, healthy. Was definitely in maternity wear by the 12 week scan.

queenofthehouse · 15/03/2010 23:15

I was about 15 weeks with my first I think although I lost a lot of weight in the first trimester as I was sick as a dog and barely kept anything substantial down. I had put on 7lb by my 20 wk scan but once the sickness stopped which wasn't much before the second scan I then ate 2 and a half stone extra Mainly a huge bump but I must say my bum and thighs were very curvy hehe. I think they say with the first it may take longer to show but i guess it depends on your usual weight/height/build. xxx

Ozziegirly · 15/03/2010 23:40

I reckon I had a bump that could be fat or baby by about 14 weeks, and now at 17 weeks its disguised in loose clothes but clear and obvious in maternity wear.

I think maybe as my boobs are like giant Jordanesque things, that kind of takes the emphasis away from the bump though....

ArcticFox · 16/03/2010 00:00

I am approaching 15 weeks and this last week I've moved to wearing my normal jeans with the button undone and maternity tops to hide the fact. I cant really see the difference just looking at myself naked but the jeans do not lie

babyicebean · 16/03/2010 00:28

I didn't show till about 7.5 months and then it seemed to arrive overnight. The doc did say this was down to having the stomach muscles of an ox as I was competing and skating uptill then I think baby was somewhere round my armpits really.I stopped when my partner refused point blank to carry on and the bloke I had a couple of rounds with went white when I told him how pregnant I was, if I had had my way I would probably have carried on for another month.

Actually thinking back my boobs arrived overnight as well at 17.

skihorse · 16/03/2010 05:31

I'm overweight and my bump came out of nowhere at around 19-20 weeks. It's very much a babybump in my eyes but does not extend further than my boobs so I'm sure others just think I'm podgy!

Spirael · 16/03/2010 09:15

I was a size 10-12 beforehand and started feeling horribly bloated from quite early on, to the point where from about 6 weeks onwards I had to dig out my larger 14 clothes from before I lost some weight and put some of my size 10s away for the forseeable future.

However it wasn't really baby bump, more the seizing up of my entire digestive system combined with constant eating due to morning sickness. I probably could have fitted in some of my normal clothes if I tried, but to be honest having anything remotely tight around my stomach made me feel more sick.

I was in maternity clothes from around 13 weeks and both DH and I were starting to notice then that my stomach was getting a bit more rounded and my waist was slowly vanishing. However my friends and colleagues didn't really notice a bump until I was around 16 weeks.

However I did get resized for some maternity bras at 13 weeks and found I'd expanded by four sizes already, so I'm guessing that maybe my chest was providing a bit of a distraction from my stomach, and my stomach didn't seem to be sticking out as far as it was because my breasts were sticking out more than normal, or something??

Anyway, the general public only started to notice at around 20 weeks (as in offering me a seat on the bus). However that's only when I didn't have my baggy coat on, as that seems to still hide everything. I'm just coming up on 22 weeks at the moment.

I'm guessing it's because I was a little cuddly to start with, but my stomach is still more on the squishy side than the solid, stretched belly I would have expected in pregnancy. I still have a slight...crease, across my (less deep than it was) belly button. It's disappearing and everything is slowly getting more solid though, so I'm guessing it's only a matter of time.

But anyway, in answer to your question... It's never too early to start blaming it on the baby! However at present it's probably more the case of the baby is causing the retention of water and pushing out the cuddly bits to make them more obvious, rather than filling the space itself.

SarahAlice · 16/03/2010 09:48

I am 5'10" and was (and stil am in certain places!) a 10-12. I am now 14+3 and the past week my tummy has got harder and 'popped' out as my other half puts it! I think that it all depends on the individual, and you will show when you show basically! I have just had to buy a maternity skirt as my 'normal' ones are now really diggin in!! Good luck and enjoy!!! xxx

Chynah · 16/03/2010 09:49

I had a little 'belly' into the early 20s weeks - noone else would have known though. Sarted to put on weight about 14 weeks.

AllieW · 16/03/2010 10:07

I was showing at around 20-24 weeks with my first, I think. Don't fret too much, though, kawaiiko, it may well just be bloating atm and then will settle down in a few weeks.

Plus, I reckon that when you know you're pregnant you're sure it's obvious to everyone else and it isn't at all.

first1 · 16/03/2010 10:49

Err about 10/11 weeks! I was a petite size 8 pre pregnancy though so don't know if that has much to do with it. Now 31weeks and definitely a whale!

Jayfer · 16/03/2010 11:33

I bloated up in the first few months (or spreading out as my mum put it - nice!) but as I was a size 16 pre pregnancy I think it took people longer to see pregnancy bump. I noticed it from about wk 14-16 with extremely tight and uncomfortable trousers. But at 34weeks now it's pretty damn obvious.

Plus people are very hesitant to ask 'the question of when's it due' in case its a chubby girl rather than a pregnant one!!

(first person who asked me this who didn't know I was pregnant I replied with 'when's what due?' - should have seen their face, v funny!)

Daynee · 16/03/2010 12:39

Ok - I'm 10 weeks and already bulging...like showOfhands. I'm normally a size 2 - and no, I'm not gloating, I'm just very thin! So, am I gaining too much weight or is it just more noticeable on smaller women?!

FatSeal · 16/03/2010 13:15

I was about 20 weeks before the bump was noticeable to others. although obviously the trousers felt pretty tight up to that point. I can really remember being 13 weeks and standing in front of the mirror thinking "there's nothing to see, people will think I'm making it up" prior to telling my boss.

I do think if you are slim (not me!) it shows really early, we had a stick insect at work and you could see by about 8 weeks no trouble

Stick insect? Somehow I think you're taking a piss...ha! I just wanted to say that "taking a piss" because I'm from the U.S. and never get to say that!

NovemberAli · 16/03/2010 13:33

Am 15+5 now and def have a little bump when I wake up in the morning - by the evening it's pretty big but this is the delight of bloating I guess! I can't do up any of my normal jeans - thank god for button expanders!

HelenaCC · 16/03/2010 13:35

I felt pretty fat from about 7 weeks and could no longer fit into my jeans I hate tight clothes at the best of times. Now 16 weeks and have kissed goodbye to my size 10 work clothes for a while, wearing flowing non maternity dresses until I can get into the clothes for full on bumps. The "thicker round the middle" from wizbitwaffle rings a bell with me and interestingly my mum said she had the same type of weight gain when she was pg with me. DH is loving the increasing bra size but Im hating the fat belly that goes with it - at the mo I still feel more fat than pg, but Im happy to not yet have a big bump to lumber round with!!!
