diarrhoea in early pregnancy

I am 8 weeks pregnant & had a takeaway last night as I didn't know what I fancied to eat.
Since the early hours of this morning I have ssuffered from diarrhoea & am worried I may have eaten something nasty & affected the baby. DP also had the takeaway but he has been fine.
Would I be more prone to diarrhoea during early pregnancy?

Feel fine inbetween, so doesn't seem like food poisoning.

Hi
I was up last night with an upset stomach & felt awful. I'd been feeling sick on & off throught the evening & wasn't sure whether it was the normal'pregnancy sickness' or my lunch out! But within a couple of hours of going to bed I was up. I've been fine so far today & did do some research on the internet & it seems quite common. Just keep your fluid levels up & eat binding foods - dry toast, crackers etc.
If it persists then definitely speak to your midwife or doctor.
Hope you're feeling better soon
Bubbakin (only 5+5...oh so far to go)

Thank you bubbakin. Sorry you have felt unwell too. This whole pregnancy thing can be such a worry can't it?
Glad you are feeling better now.

I had diarrhoea on and off from 6 weeks until about 16 weeks, it was awful and seemed to be triggered by eggs which I have never had a problem with before! I am eating eggs around once every 3 weeks now and still have quite loose poo afterwards - I love eggs and can't resist ahh! Not sure if it's a symptom or not though... I wouldn't worry too much, especially if the symptoms subside soon. Keep hydrated and feel better soon! Nikki (24 weeks) x

i had diarrhoea in early pregnancy
and again really badly in labour.

not sure if linked or not. no harm done.

ShowOfHands · 07/03/2010 15:18

Your digestive system is supposed to slow down in early pregnancy, so constipation is more of a problem. Not for me. Been pg twice and in the first trimester I seemed to have a permanently bloated, upset stomach. Google does seem to confirm that other women have the same problems.

Rest assured that even if you did have food poisoning, it wouldn't affect your baby. It's a parasite at this stage. Your body would protect it first and the main downside to sickness and diarrhoea in early pregnancy is that you feel worse as you're trying to grow a baby and be ill at the same time. Drink plenty, stay hydrated, keep up with the folic acid or any vitamins you're taking and put your feet up.

BellasYummyMummy · 07/03/2010 16:05

I also suffered with diarrhoea in early pregnancy, and towards the end aswell. The baby will be fine and will take what it needs from you. just make sure you keep yourself hydrated, and have lots of fibre

aleene · 07/03/2010 16:09

I was like this from 7 - 10 weeks in my second pregnancy. I found eating bananas helped - but don't overdo it!

Nymphadora · 07/03/2010 20:37

sorry may be tmi!

My stomach has been getting steadily worse and it doesn't seem to be helping that all I want to eat is fruit / fruit juice. My diarrhoea comes not long after eating so I assume everything is just rushing through me. Is that likely to be a problem?

7.5 weeks btw

nomorewine · 08/03/2010 08:59

Thank you all for reassuring me. Felt pretty awful yesterday so not sure if it was a bug or part of the pregnancy - hard to tell what is what at times like this isn't it?

Seems to have calmed down now, as in the diaorrhoea has stopped, but my stomach still doesn't feel right. Have decided to take the morning off work as work with children so there are no times to rest up a bit.

I have also suffered terrible wind & bloating through this pregnancy, especially after a big meal. Not good!
Diarrhoea during labour must have been awful - just what you don't need on top of everything else!

When i was first pregnant with my son, i had certain things that would make me sick!! I used to love currys but when i ate one i was up all night being sick .. I actually never had morning sickeness just when i ate a curry really :-)

babybunting2010 · 08/03/2010 09:55

Nomorewine, I am also 8 weeks (and 4 days) and have actually just got off the phone to the Dr as have been suffering with stomach cramps and diarrhea on and off since Tuesday! I have just been told that it is a more common reaction to pregnancy than it is made out to be!

I too panicked and freaked out as have actually lost about 7lbs this weekend with my lovely stomach issues. I swear to God I am going to write a book telling the truth about pregnancy, no frills or pansying around.

I am so fed up with feeling like this, have never been so scared (And excited in my life)

Sorry went off on a tangent. But basically nomorewine, Doc said that the baby is like a parasite (What a horrid description) and will take what it needs from us and that it is just Mum that suffers!

Is this your first?? It's my first so not sure if that's why I panic so much! Don't really have a anyone to turn to as such so will be using these sites quite a lot!

It is one of those things you are not really warned about isn't it? You get told about possible constipation, but not the opposite problem!

Believe it or not, this is my third, but it has been 7 years since my last baby (this is my first with DP) & I seem to be panicking a lot more this time round.

BTW, I am also exactly 8 weeks & 4 days!

actually diarrhoea in (early) labour wasn't too bad - spent most of it on the toilet which is quite a good position!
then when i got to hospital i was all cleared out (TMI) and the last part was fast, and fine. with DD2 i didn't have it and spent most of labour feeling like i needed to do a poo

darcymum · 08/03/2010 11:09

I had diarrhoea throughout the whole of my three pregnancy. With the first one I saw the doctor about it and he seemed completely unconcerned said it was just a funny little thing.

All the babies turned out just fine

ShowOfHands · 08/03/2010 11:57

"it wouldn't affect your baby. It's a parasite at this stage. Your body would protect it first and the main downside to sickness and diarrhoea in early pregnancy is that you feel worse as you're trying to grow a baby and be ill at the same time."

See, I could have been a GP, exactly what I said yesterday. And parasite sounds horrid as a description but it's very accurate and parasites are interesting, clever little creatures.

Can I co-write that book on the truth about pregnancy? And labour. And birth. And newborns. We'd be hate targets but people would be well informed...

nomorewine · 08/03/2010 11:59

Ah, that's not too bad. I had thoughts of trying to push a baby out & having diarrhoea at the same time, which wasn't a good thought!!

OP posts:
nomorewine · 08/03/2010 12:01

I think such a book would be a very good idea, SOH. There is so much they don't tell you!

babybunting2010 · 08/03/2010 12:44

Show of Hands! Yeah we can co Author! It'll be one of those stories that we can tell on Richard and Judy how we decided to write a book together when we were on the same site talking about diarrhea! How funny!

I keep thinking of doing a week by week diary with the truth the whole truth and nothing but the truth! Nothing prepared me for the panic that I am experiencing about becoming a Mum!!!! I feel like it was all a really bad idea and I am well and truly petrified! And yet if you ask ANYONE that has ever met me I am a mother missing her baby. I have always had such a strong maternal sense! I am the youngest of 5 children (18 years between myself and my eldest sister) and I have been helping out with my Neice and Nephews since I was 9 (17 years ago!).

Hmmm... I think I have more issues than I thought!

Anyway nomorewine.... I guess it doesn't get any easier regardless of how many times you have done it. WOW so you are my due date buddy then???? How exciting.

Babybunting, your message made me chuckle. I'm in the early days of PG 2 & as soon as I found out I was pg i was hyper. But slowly as the hours passed my DH started to remind me about all the 'side effects' and it all started flooding back. However, the main difference is the panic. I was really nervous for the first 15 or so weeks with PG1, thinking I can't live like this for 9mth. This time round it is better even though I've got worse symptons earlier on! But I know they should end in a couple of months. It is amazing, how after the birth you seem to have rose tinted glasses on regarding the whole pregnancy & labour! I was in labour for 2 days (no pain relief as was violently sick on gas & air & actually sick through out labour but that's another story!) ending in an emergency c sect & within an hour of the op I said to my DH, it's amazing I'd do it all again!!!
And here we are again - without the rose tinted glasses though!!

Haha yeah I think I worked out that people forget how bad it is! Otherwise there's no way anyone would do this twice!

I am not sure whether mine is made worse by having an underactive thyroid gland so my hormones aren't great anyway!

Am struggling anyway as can't work out what my craving is..... I know I am craving something but I can't work out what it is for love nor money!

Or a third time!!

I seem to be struggling with what I fancy eating too, which was the reason for the takeaway on Saturday night. I just wasn't fancying anything I had in the house & couldn't face cooking with all those smells that go with it!
