Sorry don't know but would love to know the answer to this. Am desperate for some blue cheese sauce with pasta!

daniwalkes · 05/03/2010 19:07

i always thought it was... i have things like baked camembert becuase the midwife said providing it had been cooked then it was fine as it kills off the live bacteria.
Im guessing it would be fine!

mummytopebs · 05/03/2010 19:09

Well stilton and broccoli soup was one of my cravings and i ate it throughout pregnancy, and 6 week old dd is laid on my knee with no harm done x

If you're going the route of avoiding certain things including some cheeses, then they have to be thoroughly cooked to be 'safe'. So to bubbling point at least and held there for a while. So I'm not sure about the baked camenbert as it won't have been boiled iyswim, but the soup is probably fine. I didn't avoid these foods anyway though.

I wouldn't eat stilton soup if I was pg. I doubt it would have been thoroughly cooked.

Nothing to do with stilton and camembert being uncooked or unpasteurised -- the reason you're not supposed to eat either is because of the mould. All blue cheeses are out, as well as cheeses like brie and camembert in which mould is used in the processing and/or the rind is mouldy. That's before you get to the issue of pasteurisation

So no, you shouldn't be eating stilton or camembert, raw or cooked.

Advice on the FSA website - you CAN eat it if it's cooked and this is the advice I was also given by my midwife:

Can I eat Brie and blue cheese when I'm pregnant if it's cooked?
Pregnant women are advised against eating these types of cheese because of the risk of listeria. However, thorough cooking should kill any listeria, so it should be safe to eat food containing, these and other cheeses such as Camembert or chevre (a type of goats' cheese), that have a similar rind, provided it has been properly cooked and is steaming hot all the way through.

Petsville · 06/03/2010 16:42

I would without worrying - I've been getting my blue cheese fix by making pasta sauce and bubbling it longer than I would normally. Listeria doesn't survive cooking.

Poppypuppy · 07/03/2010 16:20

ooh, a bit of stilton and a huge glass of port ...! if only!

debka · 07/03/2010 16:52

Be a devil poppypuppy, pretend you're French, they all do it!

shipsladyg · 09/03/2010 11:27

Chances of listeria are far, far smaller than being involved in a Road Traffic Accident. But if you're a worrier then 70C is the heating point you need to get it above.

I've been eating Stilton, brie, camembert etc when I'm happy with where it's come from.

My mother in law has only just stopped looking at me as if I'm ingesting arsenic...

Kimbo95 · 07/03/2015 17:54

I am having Stilton sauce with a steak tonight will it cause any harm? As I've heard different things about only having it cold?

cogitosum · 07/03/2015 17:56

I think even nhs says Stilton is fine cooked or not

ReeseWithoutHerSpoon · 07/03/2015 17:59

I'm sure I read it was soft blue cheeses like DolceLate and Roquefort that were risky. Hard blue cheese like Stilton is fine as far as I can temember.

Feckeggblue · 07/03/2015 18:03

Stilton is ok hot or cold. It's other blue cheeses that are to be avoided. Enjoy

Leviticus · 07/03/2015 18:04

Yes you can eat it cooked or uncooked as it's a hard cheese - check the NHS website for official reassurance.

I discovered this at 8 months with my last and ate slabs of it. Bliss!

NerrSnerr · 07/03/2015 18:06

Yes, Stilton is fine to eat cooked or uncooked as it's a hard cheese.

Well... better late than never!! Grin Grin

Thank you MN!

Feckeggblue · 07/03/2015 20:18

I wonder if the advice used to be to avoid Stilton as it's the single thing that has caused the most comment in my pregnancy (preggers over Xmas) I've had at least 7 people tell me I can't, and a couple to
The point I've had to google on my phone to shut them up.

Unless people don't understand the difference between hard and soft cheese maybe
