Any reason I can't wait until after the baby is born to buy (or send DH to buy!) the pram

Not due until the summer but already being asked if we've decided which pram we're going to get!

Had planned to pick out the best option(s) and then wait until after baba was born to actually buy. Depending on my back/recovery from birth/size of baba etc. I might actually go with a sling and we mainly use the car so amount/type of walking I do will depend on the summer weather.

I realise that there can be a delivery lag with some prams so will research that when picking out our preference.

Mentioned this plan to family member (who asked the question) this evening who basically sucked their teeth and started muttering in a very disapproving manner. Is there any real reason that we should buy before the birth??

I realise that hospital won't let us out without a car seat but surely a pram can wait??

TIA

Oh yes, wait. If I'd waited with my DS1 then I wouldn't have bought a big tank of a pram - he was carried in a sling until big enough to go in a lightweight buggy.

Bleatblurt · 01/03/2010 21:22

And the stupid tank of a pram is STILL taking up room in my house 5 years later! Grr.

Habbibu · 01/03/2010 21:23

Pram can wait, though if you buy new sometimes they take a wee while to arrive. Slings are fab with newborns, anyway. Can still count the no of times ds has been in his pram, and he's 5 mo! Think your plan is wise, though should say that dd slept in her pram from birth (easy to rock to sleep!). But keep an eye out for ebay bargains.

differentID · 01/03/2010 21:23

Many shops have a good couple of weeks wait for the pram, so do not count on it being available to walk away with when you do go to get it.

Also, if you do pick something you like and think is right for you, some places do a deposit scheme. You may also be able to arrange for it to be delivered on a particular day.

oopsandbabycoconut · 01/03/2010 21:23

No reason not to wait - DD didn't go in hers until she was about 6 weeks then it was in the carrycot part or occasionally in the carseat.

Lovethesea · 01/03/2010 21:24

Some pram places told us prams would take 6-8 weeks to deliver - but if you go online I imagine you will find nearly everything available quicker.

I know plenty of people who have not got one for months as they got on great with slings/wraps.

Enjoy :-)

Thanks for all the fast replies guys - spent 2 hours worrying thinking about this and get nice straight answers in 5 minutes on here!

Now if only I could get my head straight about the 101 other things babies seem to need - what ever happened to babies sleeping in a drawer

The only potential fly in the ointment is if you end up with a section, in which case carrying the baby in a sling for longer periods might be quite hard work in the beginning...

Habbibu · 01/03/2010 21:36

Good point, mrsh, though I bet there'd be prams to borrow easily enough.

jamie - for various reasons we barely bought a thing for dd. I went to tesco on the way home from hosp to buy clothes!

Habbibu · 01/03/2010 21:37

so, anyway, which sling are you going to get?

tutu100 · 01/03/2010 21:39

I agree with Butterball, I would have chosen a very different pram if I had waited until after ds2 was born.

Out of interest what tank of a pram did you have Butterball?

Bleatblurt · 01/03/2010 21:51

Oh it was some giant Mothercare pram. Not even a pretty tank. Clearly pg hormones do not agree with me when it comes to style.

JamieJay · 01/03/2010 22:14

Habbibu - don't get me started on slings! Even more complicated than prams

We used our pram loads from the start, but then we are city folk and I wasn't a sling-er.

We got ours from kiddicare.com - genearlly great prices and next day delivery if it's in stock. Good customer service too.

I would say try to do your research before the baby arrives so you're fairly sure what you're after, as you won't have a lot of spare time for the first couple of months (or year, in our case!).

There are lots of lovely helpful pram-owners on here who will be able to suggest prams that will meet your needs if you post.

JamieJay · 01/03/2010 22:28

Plenty of research into prams and slings will be undertaken - most of my hobbies aren't compatible with later pregnancy so need something to keep me occupied!!

Jamiejay wanders off to add kari-me to the research list........

If you go for the ubiquitous maxi-cosi car seat, you might find it helpful to know that a fair few prams have adaptors that will enable you to attach it to them to form a travel system. It made our pram decision a lot easier once we knew this .

BertieBotts · 01/03/2010 22:39

Yep stretchy wrap is a winner (a Kari-me is a type of stretchy wrap so that gets the thumbs up!) - I made my own actually, no-sew, for about £5. I believe the Kari-me is something like 95% cotton 5% lycra which is different to some other brands. I like the look of the Mobys with the nice fabric panels on too.

IsItMeOr · 01/03/2010 22:41

Incidentally, as you seem to realise, babies don't need half the things we seem to buy for them. I laugh (now) at the things we bought.

My essentials list would be:
Basic white vests and sleepsuits in newborn and 0-3month size (make sure the sleepsuits have the built in scratch mitts. Under no circumstances should you buy separate scratch mitts, they never stay on)
Some cute little white hats
Fleecy blanket to wrap them in

Nappies
Way more cotton wool balls than you possibly think you will need
Nappy bin (unless you're using resusables)
Swaddle-me

You don't need:
3 different baby baths
top and tail bowl
sleeping bags in 0-6 months before babe is born

I could go on...

Habbibu · 01/03/2010 22:46

Well, all my newborn clothes got tossed out when dd turned out to be 10lb 11. Hence the trip to tesco.

You need a box - cardboard will do - in which to store cream, wipes, cotton wool, nappy bags if using disposables, etc. v. important. Get scoping that out.

randomimposter · 02/03/2010 07:16

I always thought I was a reasonably intelligent woman (graduate, senior manager, well versed with comon sense) and then I entered the world of baby kit.... I found the whole pram/pushchair/buggy/travel system/3 in one/car seat adaptable blah blah blah TOTALLY bewildering.

Ended up copying a friend's choice . Saved me much angst. Went for the Bugaboo Chamelon - expensive but we use it every day as hardly ever use the car (I used to drive 30k miles a year!). DS now 21 months.

Absolutely right on "it can wait" (I didn't leave the house for about 3 weeks anyway after an emergency CS) and also you don't need half the stuff you think you will/might.

Enjoy the journey!

Thanks for the continuing information - in work but will have a proper read tonight
