Crunchy Nut Cornflakes

asparagusaddict · 22/02/2010 13:23

Has anyone eaten at least one bowl of these a day throughout their entire pregnancy and only realised in the 3rd trimester that the nuts in them are not almonds but peanuts?

Did the baby turn out to have any allergies?

I'm not allergic to anything but my DH is allergic to penicillin and has eczma - I've been avoiding everything with peanuts in only to find out that I've actually been eating peanuts every day. I am so angry with myself for being so unbelievably stupid.

Can anyone offer any reassurance?

Yes, I love them anyway and ate loads when pg. In fact, they guessed I was pg at work one day when I put the cornflakes and milk into a mug, mashed it as you would a tea bag, scooped out the cornflake slop and drank the milk And yes, I was dim and had no idea they had peanuts in until about week 37!

DD is so far (2.1yo) an allergy free zone.

nowwearefour · 22/02/2010 13:28

I did something very similar with dd1 (ate cnc each day, only realising right at the end about the peanuts!). She is now 4.6 nad v healthy with no allergies and no excema/ asthma. In fact i think teh advice now is that there isnt enough evidence to advise against or for eating peanuts vs not eating them during pregnancy. i think it prob best just to carry on eating them and at least your baby has had some exposure to them. nothing you can do about it and i am sure it will have made no difference at all. carry on enjoying them as stopping now prob not a good thing. i am sure baby will be fine.

Bettymum · 22/02/2010 13:32

I think the advice now is not to actively avoid peanuts unless you have allergies, so I think you and your baby should be fine (but I'm not a medical professional). I haven't been eating CNC, but I have had a few peanut Tracker bars in this pg and did the same in last pregnancy - my DD doesn't have any apparent allergies.
P.s. Rockbird - yuck!!!!!

MumNWLondon · 22/02/2010 13:47

??? I thought advice now was not to avoid peanuts unless babies father is allergic to them?

I ate peanuts in both pregnancies and neither DC have any allergies - DH has hayfever.

My SIL avoided peanuts whole way though pregnancy and her DS is very allergic to them (she has to carry epi-pen for him). She really regrets not eating them, and ate throughout her 2nd pregnancy (he is too young to be tested yet). Neither she or her DH have any allergies although her DH's sister is allergic to fish.

nellymoo · 22/02/2010 13:52

Current advice states that even mothers with an allergic child do not need to avoid peanuts during pregnancy. In fact, current thinking suggests that it may do more harm to avoid allergens during pregnancy. My DD has multiple allergies, I am 36 weeks pregnant with DC2 and have not avoided anything, troughing the lot!!

Allegrogirl · 22/02/2010 13:58

Latest advice is not to avoid peanuts unless there is family history of peanut allergy. Can't remember the exact wording now.

I ignored the advice in my last pregnancy because I didn't think there was enough evidence to support it with it plus I have had a fierce Snickers/peanut M&M craving in both pregnancies. Nice to know I was right with this one.

My dd aged 2.4 has no problem with peanut butter.

Mmmm, crunchy nut cornflakes (Homer Simpson style slobber).

Rockbird · 22/02/2010 14:49

Bettymum, nooooo, Crunchy Nut milk is gorg. They ought to sell it in bottles from the milkman.

Common sense tells me that if you avoid something in pg, your baby has had no exposure to that thing and is therefore more likely to kick off when confronted with it in the big wide world. Obviously I'm talking nuts and not fag smoke or cannabis but not avoiding them makes more sense to my non medical but very logical brain. I did avoid (when I remembered!) with DD but I was a nervous newbie. Next time round it'll be Snickers for nine months solid

Bettymum · 22/02/2010 15:13

Really Rockbird??

In that case, it's one of those things that I just might have to try.

SillyCalamari · 22/02/2010 15:13

I was Crunchy-Nut crazy when I was pregnant, I couldn't eat enough of them (I've always loved them but then I had a good excuse to eat several bowls at a time!) and no probs whatsoever.

CathN · 22/02/2010 17:25

I'm 10 wks pregnant and breakfast cereals (including crunchy nut) have been a staple part of my diet for the last few weeks. One of the few things I've been able to eat! I hadn't realised that Crunchy Nut has peanuts, but I'm not avoiding peanuts since I was told that's no longer considered valid advice.

Have also rediscovered cheerios and rice krispies recently, which are going down a treat.

asparagusaddict · 22/02/2010 18:26

Thank you so much for your replies!! I hadn't heard there had been an update to the guidance - I almost had a seizure in the supermarket today when I saw I'd been eating peanuts for the whole pregnancy.

It does make sense though that exposure to the peanut allergen might be a good thing so it isn't a surprise to his system.

I am totally going to mash up some crunchy nut cornflakes with milk in a mug and drink the juice, genius!

Incidentally, I also just found out that pesto, marzipan and muesli have peanuts in them - and I have eaten loads of these things too thinking they were other kinds of nuts. Oh well! I am such a dumbass for not realising but I'm reassured that it's unlikely to have done any harm. Thank you

MumNWLondon · 22/02/2010 20:03

no marizpan is generally with almonds, and pesto has pine nuts, generally not peanuts. some muselis have peanuts, some don't. but it doesn't matter!

sweetkitty · 22/02/2010 20:07

I have never avoided them, love a bowl late at night mmm.

Hvae 3 DC no allergies.

DorotheaPlenticlew · 22/02/2010 20:13

Marzipan shouldn't have peanuts in it -- is all ground almonds. And pesto, definitely pine nuts.

Glad you have been reassured. I am about to have some peanut butter on toast

strawberrykate · 22/02/2010 20:20

Well my biggest craving has been peanu butter and marmite on toast-so I'll go with the 'it;s fine' school of thought!

pookey · 22/02/2010 20:36

The latest peanut news is that some children in one study have been desensitised of peanut allergy by exposing them to tiny amounts of peanut powder and building it up to 5 peanuts a day news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/health/7899383.stm

There can only be a small amount in crunchy nut cornflakes surely if you didnt realise they were in there so its probably ok. I avoided peanuts in pregnancy but gave into the odd snickers cravings. This time round I am having peanut butter when I crave it as it is rich in zinc but I am trying not to eat it every day. App however, the cure for these children will only be maintained by them having small amounts of peanuts everyday so in honesty having tiny amounts hidden in food is probably better than my occasional massive splodge of peanut butter .

Rockbird · 22/02/2010 21:25

Actually you could sieve it...didn't think of that, or have a sieve at work.

Beanigan · 22/02/2010 21:58

I avoided peanuts in my first pregnancy - my DH has hayfever and is allergic to melons. My DS1 has a peanut allergy. I'm now pregnant wtih DC2 and the consultant told me NOT to avoid peanuts but not to go overboard either. Just a little amount here and there. Fingers crossed DC2 won't have an allergy .....

stottiecake · 22/02/2010 21:59

just wanted to say I hate nuts - never eat them but my ds ended up with a peanut and almond allergy - you can't win!!

Also wanted to say that my nephew has peanut allergy and his mum (my SIL) avoided throughout pregnancy. He is on the LEAP study and was in the peanut avoidance group,
www.leapstudy.co.uk/study_about.html
and still developed a serious allergy to them.

My SIL is of course v concerned (not least as he has risk of serious reaction if exposed) but person on study suggested that there doesn't seem to be much difference in allergy rates in the peanut eating group and the peanut avoidance group so he probably would have developed the allergy either way.

Poledra · 23/02/2010 09:50

Never mind Crunchy Nut Cornflakes - I had a craving for Sugar Puffs when pg. DH swore I was going to give birth to the Honey Monster....

PS Avoided peanuts with DDs 1 and 2, was told with DD3 that there was no need as avoiding peanuts had not been shown to reduce the incidence of peanut allergy.

Basically, unless you have a peanut allergy you can eat peanuts whether pregnant or breastfeeding. The government recently changed the advice.

See the FSA stance on peanuts and pregnancy

I'm going to treat myself to a Snickers at lunch now

CathN · 23/02/2010 11:11

mmm snickers. might buy one too..
