How the hell can I get it off? I have tried soap, cold water etc.

My hands have swollen now and its actually quite painful sometimes.

I really dont want it cut off. Im 38+2 - Should I just put up with it or is there some magic way to move it??

When My ri g got stuck I did lots and lots of cold water and pulling. As did DH. We might have tried butter as well. In the end we did get it off.

I think it being there isn't a good idea - if you swell a bit more then it could get v uncomftable and might affect your circulation. Not sure what you do about getting ri gs off though.

coldtits · 17/01/2010 19:17

Put your hand up about your head (lie on the floor and hold it in the air.)

then after 20 minutes of gently wriggling your fingers make your dh oil your hand with veg oil and try to ease it off.

If not, you'll have to cut it.

cookielove · 17/01/2010 19:18

If you need to get it cut off, fire stations have ring cutters, i'm sure all good a&e's would to, (the one i went to did not)

mistlethrush · 17/01/2010 19:20

I'd do what coldtits recommends with the addition of something cool for that hand to try to reduce swelling more too....

FabIsGoingToBeFabIn2010 · 17/01/2010 19:21

Hand cream is good to get rings off.

mama2moo · 17/01/2010 19:48

Thanks all, I will try all of those tonight.

Before you try anything cool your hand down. I used peas from the freezer in a teatowel for a bit and then had some cold water to keep dipping my hands in. Did that for about half an hour and then put on handcream and liquid soap.
Try not to get frustrated with it, catch 22 says that the more you panic, the hotter and more swollen your finger will get.
(And twist up instead of pulling helps spread the lube)

lambanana · 17/01/2010 19:56

KY jelly or lube - lots of it

allstarsprincess · 17/01/2010 19:57

If none of this works tonight try to remove it first thing in the morning. Often swelling goes down overnight and builds up again as the day goes on.

Good luck.

Hope all these tips help! I've taken my engagment and wedding rings off today at 33+2 - they're getting tight and I don't want to suddenly find that I can't get them off - but I feel naked without them

PennyScotia · 18/01/2010 13:38

It might be worth seeing a jeweller as I know my mum (who worked in a jewellers as a Saturday girl) has a bit of a knack of removing stuck rings. If nothing else works, they should be able to cut it and repair it for you.

Ivykaty44 · 18/01/2010 13:42

My dad birnt his hand and at A&E they removed his wedding ring with cotton - he was happy for them to vut it off but they insisted ♥

So they wound cotton in front of the ring and slide the ring onto the cotton all the way along the finger

displayuntilbestbefore · 18/01/2010 13:43

washing up liquid - lots of it, slathered over - will help slide it off

displayuntilbestbefore · 18/01/2010 13:44

if jot then you ought to consider getting it cut off or risk your finger

Two4One · 18/01/2010 14:24

What's more valuable, the ring or the finger? I'd cut my hand off to save my engagement ring!

Sorry - just teasing! My Mum had to have a ring cut off once after some terrible swelling incident - A&E didn't have the right equipment and called in the fire brigade. And, as they travel as a pack, the whole team turned up. My Dad was humming, "Hugh, Pugh, Barney McGrew, Cuthbert, Dibble and Grub" as they filed into the room. What a comedian

Poledra · 18/01/2010 14:32

I had a ring cut off when pg with DD1 - I went to a good jeweller's; they had the right equipment and were able to quote me for the repair immediately. (it wasn't worth repairing, it had sentimental value only - I still have the pieces in my jewellery box ). They did also try to get the ring off for me first, but it wasn't for budging.

notasausage · 18/01/2010 14:44

All the other posts have the right idea - cold, lubrication and don't panic! All I would add is to ease the loose skin down under the ring to help it over the knuckle - get some help with this as it's a bit tricky to do to yourself!

A good jewellers should have a ring cutter if it comes to it and it shouldn't be hugely expensive to repair.

Let us know how you get on!

FabIsGoingToBeFabIn2010 · 18/01/2010 19:02

Have you got the ring off?

I had to have one cut off when pregnant with ds1 and I was so upset as DH had bought it for me when we were first together.

mama2moo · 18/01/2010 19:21

Not yet! I have tried most things here. In the mornings my hands are swollen up because of carpel tunnel.

Im going to try ice cold water again later on.

I really dont want it cut off though, dp gave it to me and we cant afford to replace it.

You do need to get it off asap.

mama2moo · 18/01/2010 20:14

I know. Its not painful just itching from where its red underneath.

I am going to try cold washing up liquid later after soaking my hand in a bowl of cold water.

Wish me luck

I do. You need to get it off.

ChunkyChick · 18/01/2010 20:41

I got my rings cut off in both my pregnancies by jewellers, no problems. They have a special device that does it. Wasn't even charged. This time I went to Goldsmiths

mama2moo · 18/01/2010 20:47

What do they use?? Trouble is, I can barely walk around the house let alone into town! The baby is so engaged now.

OP posts:
mistlethrush · 18/01/2010 21:21

someone below suggested cotton - you can imagine that if you wound sewing cotton so that there is just a single layer, flat, firmly (but not too tight as it might make another place expand) you might find it gave a smooth, slightly constrained surface over which to gently pull the ring - you'd need help with this though, and I'd try the ice water to startwith, although dry your hand very carefully afterwards....
