Please can anyone help? I started bleeding last night (very light), then went for my 12 wk scan and it showed no heart beat and baby too small. Been told to come back on 18 Jan to confirm pregnancy not been successful. In the meantime, severe cramps have started and bleeding heavily. Am struggling to cope - sanitary towels not working and getting onto clothes. Should I get in the bath as I can't keep sitting on the toilet as that hurts my back. Does anyone know how long it will last? Have taken strong painkillers, but don't know how much more of this I can take as it's been a hour now.

Have you called the GP/ MW/ NHS Direct for advice?

HooperMummy · 07/01/2010 19:25

I just wanted to post to say how sorry I am that you are going through this. I don't have any advice to give but I just didn't want read and run. My heart really does go out to you. x

jennifersofia · 07/01/2010 19:29

Wanted to post so you weren't alone - I am sorry that this is happening.
I miscarried before my first, around 10 weeks, and for me the cramps lasted 3 or so hours, and bleeding a bit longer, tailing off gradually. Is there someone you can ask to get you some super pads? (I used tena lady) I am sure you could get in the bath, if you can handle blood in the bath. The warmth might help with cramps. Also a warm 'hot' water bottle might ease things a bit.

Good idea to check with NHS direct.
I hope things resolve soon. Take care.

weegiemum · 07/01/2010 19:30

Poor you - I've been through this 3 times years ago and it's hard.

If you are bleeding that heavily you should probably call someone to ask advice. The heavy bleeding will probably not last more than about 24 hours but the blood loss can drag on for a week or more. But if you are soaking through towels and passing clots you might need to be assessed to make sure everything is normal. Can you call NHS Direct or the hospital where you were seen today.

I'm sorry about your baby. Hope things are as easy as possible for you.

nikkisbump · 07/01/2010 19:30

Poor you When I was miscarrying, if I was going through a lot of pads an hour I was told to call the Emergency Gynae Unit straight away. The pain is unbearable and I found painkillers didn't work for me either. I was told to go back to the hospital and they prescribed something which did help. Give them a call, even just for advice

I'm so sorry for your loss x

CMOTdibbler · 07/01/2010 19:30

If you are bleeding through a pad in less than an hour, then you need to go to A+E. Is there someone who can take you ? If not, then call an ambulance.

Am v angry on your behalf that you weren't told at the hospital what to do, and very sad for you - my first pregnancy was shown to be a miscarriage at the 12 week scan

IckleJess · 07/01/2010 19:31

Am so sorry to hear what you are going through.

No personal experience I'm afraid, but have heard others say that once the cramps become severe then the miscarriage is completed shortly afterwards. Sorry to be graphic but once you actually miscarry then the pain virtually ends immediately.

I would ring the hospital/midwife/dr for some help - do you have someone with you?

Again, I'm so sorry, stay strong.

nikkisbump · 07/01/2010 19:33

Oh, and I was told not to have a bath for 2 weeks due to risk of infection! So perhaps avoid that unless they say otherwise.

twogirls1more · 07/01/2010 19:36

Really sorry to hear that. :-( I miscarried last April but mine quite different in that I bled over 3wks in total and never got to stage where was getting thru a pad an hour but was heavy for a couple of days with clots but no pain except backache. I would get straight on to your Early Preg unit if I were you for advise. Once again so sorry, and like so many others, know what it's like. Good luck x

decafgirl · 07/01/2010 19:38

So sorry WYG, hope the pain passes soon. Haven't got any advice but felt compelled to post something.

Lots of love xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

LillianGish · 07/01/2010 19:41

So sorry. I miscarried my first at 11 weeks - had a very bad couple of hours then just like a normal period. I think I just sat on the toilet in the end. If I'd had a bath I would have got in it - unfortunately only had a shower. Is someone with you?

EldonAve · 07/01/2010 19:45

If it doesn't ease up or you feel faint call an ambulance

northlondonchoclover · 07/01/2010 19:50

When I was MCing - I was told to go to A&E if soaking through more than one pad per hour.

Sorry for your loss.
x

WestYorkshireGirl · 07/01/2010 19:56

Thanks everyone, My DH is here, but has gone out to buy some more towels. The cramps and flow have eased slightly. Will call the number I was given - it's for the gynae unit at the hospital and see what they say.

Really sorry

peppapighastakenovermylife · 07/01/2010 20:09

I am so sorry. Please let us know you are 'alright'.

HeadlessLadyH · 07/01/2010 20:19

So sorry you are going through this. I've been there too a few times and each time I've gone down to A&E when I felt that it was (TMI alert) gushing. Hope you get some good advice from the hospital. Take care.

Joygirl78 · 07/01/2010 21:02

I have also been through this - lost baby at c6 weeks (unknown to me), but didn't miscarry until nearly 11. I know it's awful. In my case, I was told to expect a heavy bleed, but in fact I bled slowly over many days (about 7). It sounds like in your case it is happening a lot quicker. I got a lot of very severe pain though and I found that the strongest pain killers that you can buy over the counter that mix codeine and ibroprofen did relieve the pain a bit. Try also hot water bottle and moving around if you can. So sorry. You are so not alone. Stay positive. I am now 35 weeks pregnant and conceived successfully only 2 months after the MC. But focus on getting through this first.

tobago04 · 07/01/2010 21:10

I'm so sorry WYG ,hope you are ok xxxx

wasabipeanut · 07/01/2010 21:54

So sorry to read this I miscarried at 10 weeks earlier this year and it's a horrid process. In my case I bled for the best part of a week quite mildly then had a massive loss of blood and tissue following some quite nasty cramping. Then the same occured about 24 hours later which is quite a normal pattern according to the mc unit I went to.

I echo what everyone else has said abour painkilers and when to seek help.

Give yourself plenty of time to rest and recover. It's just horrid I know x

LadyBiscuit · 07/01/2010 21:59

I am so very sorry, it's such a hard thing.

I miscarried at 13 weeks and it lasted about three days. I used massive pads and went and sat on the loo whenever I had a huge cramp because it meant I was losing a clot. I took co-codamol for the pain - it was not dissimilar to being in labour. I just had over the counter stuff but I'm sure you could get some 30/500 if your DH explained what was happening which would at least deaden the worst of it.

It wasn't a very pleasant experience and I'm so sorry you're going through it.

VirginBirth · 07/01/2010 22:00

I have no experience of this myself but my best friend and my sister both had MCs. I know it's just awful. And I wanted to say how sorry I am for your loss x

LadyOfTheFlowers · 07/01/2010 22:02

So sorry.
It is truly awful.

I had one before DS1 in 2004 at 10 weeks.

Once the cramping and bleeding had picked up to almost unbearable, the m/c completed and I passed a lot of 'tissue' then as others have mentioned, the pain virtually disappeared immediately.

I was using one towel every 40-45 mins or so but didn't get help or phone as my periods are like this anyway for the first 2 days. I assumed it was normal.

Hope your DH is back soon.

WestYorkshireGirl · 07/01/2010 22:41

This is DH posting.

We have spoken with the midwife and as blood loss has reduced since earlier this evening we have not ventured out to A&E. Suitable painkillers have been found lurking in the cupboard to combat the cramps.

WYG is currently in a hot bath and thanks everyone for their help and support!
