hi all,

i'm due with my 2nd in april and should finish work in about 10 weeks. another friend finshes in a couple of weeks and is due with her first so i'm helping organise her leaving gift. which got me thinking about mine.

As it is my second there is really nothing i need and i'm wondering whether i should ask for donations to a milk bank charity. my other half doesn't think this is a good idea and thinks it sounds a bit 'worthy'. obviously if i were to get cash or vouchers they would be spent but on what i don't know!

what have other people done the 2nd time around?

Why dont you get them to buy some sort of pampering voucher for you? definately not 'worthy'! There are a load of companies that come to your home and do pregnancy massage. If you are in London I have bought friends treatments from 'return to glory'

moondog · 06/01/2010 16:52

The donation to a milk bank sounds nice but aren't you kind of assuming you will get somethnig when you might not?
People tend to ease off with 2nd and subsequent babies.

mothercare vouchers or boots vouchers to spend on nappies, clothes or xmas pressies?

Fibilou · 06/01/2010 16:54

Definitely not a donation - your colleagues will want to buy something for you (and the baby), not someone else, however good that would be.
What about Mothercare/M&P/Boots vouchers ? I like the pregnancy massage idea - my DH booked one for me just before I left work for M/leave and it was wonderful

bargainhuntingbetty · 06/01/2010 16:54

Some crates of Nappies from a cash and carry and a supply of wipes. When I had dd2 my best friend bought me 3 packs of nappies and the wipes and bags to go with them and I sooooo appreciated it. I already had a dd and she didnt think I needed anything;

I always love getting special things just for the new baby (a special blanket or an outfit) so that I dont feel bad the baby is in all hand me downs,

MumNWLondon · 06/01/2010 20:00

if you know the sex then clothes... other obvious things are baby gym, sling, baby monitor, swaddling blanket, bouncy chair, grobag etc but if you have all of this... they will not want to get donation they will want to get you something. even though this is number three i could still think of things if pushed!

thisisyesterday · 06/01/2010 20:02

i think donations is a lovely idea!

but if you decide not to then vo9uchers are good. that's what i asked for with my second. they got me a little gift and the rest was in vouchers

mama2moo · 06/01/2010 20:22

My work gave me vouchers for a clothes shop and some make up when I left this time! Last time they did me a massive hamper of baby clothes.

I thought it was really nice to have something for me that I can use once the baby is here

emmajlh · 08/01/2010 16:54

thanks everyone!

the cash and carry nappies is a great idea. i think i know someone i work with who has a costco card. is there a big saving to be made as i would normally by tesco's own nappies rather than branded ones.

my pregnant coworker and I are going for a mum to be pampering day in a couple of weeks, can't wait!

the only other thing i was planning on getting is a buggy board but that is almost like a gift for DD1 rather than the baby.

birthandpostnataldoula - how much is a postnatal doula?

i still want to give funds to a milk bank but i think i'll wait till feeding is established and do a justgiving sponsored donation. it costs £100 to collect/screen/process/store every litre of breastmilk.

A nappy cake? Pretty and useful!

sarahsyrup · 14/01/2010 11:41

Hi I recently had just this situation. Went on Maternity leave end of Dec, and DS1 only 20 months, so had really most things I needed.

However, I asked for Newborn nappies, Infacare, Newborn dummies, bottles and bottle brush (I'm breast feeding, but only for about 3 months and wanted new bottles for a new baby), and a new changing mat (do have one, but seemed nice to get a new one for a new baby). I'm now totally stocked up on all these essentials and it'll save me a bundle - esp the nappies. They also got me all bits and pieces for my hospital bag - little shower gels, flannel, new slippers etc.

Hope this helps.

How about some vouchers from http://www.cookfood.net/ - so you can have some meals in the freezer for those early days of mayhem?!

PanicMode · 14/01/2010 13:27

Sorry - can't do links apparently!

serialmum · 14/01/2010 21:37

I finished up work today and was given a relaxing bath set, my favourite perfume and decorative bottle of my favourite tipple to wet baby no 4's head with.

Was really nice to have gifts for me as all my colleagues know that by no 4 I have everything I need for baby.

xx
