Is it pathetic to avoid going out in the snow for fear of falls?

Hi,
Am 25 weeks and off work at the mo due to a few complications.

Just wondering what other pg ladies are doing about going out and about in the snow? I don't have to go anywhere but I usually take DS to playgroup. It is a 15 min walk through my village and my DH is already calling me from work worrying about me potentially falling in the snow.

I am a bit worried but was intending on going. Am I being irresponsible or is my DH overreacting? We have about 10 - 15 cm of snow and it is still coming down.

No, absolutely not pathetic, if you're worried. If you feel safe, though, go for it. But be prepared to feel, at best, very foolish indeed if you do fall.

Personally, I would probably stay in the warm for today.

I don't have a problem going out and about - but when I said to my Mum this morning that I was planning on walking round to a friend's house you'd think I'd said I was going to swing on a trapeze.
I've never fallen over in the show before, I figure why should I now ? I don't have a problem with my balance as my bump is quite neat (37+4)

underactivethyroidmum · 06/01/2010 10:26

No you're not being foolish - I'm 31 weeks and staying in as I'm terrified of falling and breaking a limb !!

We have around 15 cm of snow with a considerable amount of ice underneath the new snow so unless I really have to go out I'm staying put !!!

Plus bump kicks the living daylights out of my poor tummy when I get cold and the cold really doesn't do much to assist my bladder control

winjy · 06/01/2010 10:29

im only 10 weeks and dp wont let me go out in case i fall!! so not ridiculous at all xx

Momdeguerre · 06/01/2010 10:38

I can be a bit clumsy at the best of times so I suppose that is why DH is so concerned and I am not convinced I would get DS pushchair through the snow. Really not convinced I would manage to carry / walk with a very wriggly 17 month old and stay up!

Just don't like the thought of being pathetic! Helps to know that I am not the only one who will be staying in.

Thank you!

I'm 31 weeks and am only going to work because it isn't too icy where I live. Walking in the snow's fine but it's the slushy stuff that's more slippy and I felt so panicked walking from the bus stop into the office this morning that I almost called some friends from work to come out and help me! So I don't think you're being unreasonable at all, it's stressful worrying about falls when you're pregnant.

TakeLovingChances · 06/01/2010 11:03

Ladies I am with you all too!

I am feeling housebound and so bored already and it's only 11am!

I started maternity leave yesterday (am 32 weeks) and had all these plans for what I wanted to do when I stopped work. But now I'm sitting in my living room, looking out at the snow falling and surfing the net. Bored.

I do drive, and can drive on the snow with some confidence, but prefer not to.

Also, we live on the side of a hill so chances of slipping are very high.

I'm scared of falling a breaking a limb, or hurting the baby. Think it's only natural to feel that way.

playftseforme · 06/01/2010 11:09

I'm 15 wks and would rather not be going anywhere but have run out of milk :-(

Trying to locate dh's wellies for the trek...

ChunkyChick · 06/01/2010 11:15

35 weeks today and also staying indoors, with dd 2.3. I fell over outside our house the other day and it wasn't even snowing! I am a very clumsy person so if anyone is likely to fall down it's me. So booooooored though.

passionberry · 06/01/2010 11:20

I'm 25 weeks and walked to work this morning as usual - it was easier walking in fresh snow last night but where I am it was very icy and slippy this morning.

I am not so big yet that my balance is affected and I walked slowly and carefully.

I actually dislike thinking of myself as somehow less capable than usual, but each to their own. If you feel nervous, don't go out.

difficultdecision · 06/01/2010 12:48

I'm 37 weeks and have been down the round building a snowman with DS this morning.

BusyMissIzzy · 06/01/2010 12:54

I'm 31+5 and would only go out in the snow if I really had to. I'm not going in to work today in case I get stranded there! It's only about 2 miles from my flat, but I don't want to have to walk home if I can't get out of the carpark (on a hill) or the tube craps out.
This morning I've cleaned the bathroom (nesting? ) and will probably do some more tidying later on.

MrsCrawf · 06/01/2010 13:15

Your play group is probably closed anyway! Personally I wouldn't risk it - mind you I am on crutches and don't feel safe on a good day!

stressheaderic · 06/01/2010 14:03

I'm 33 weeks and not the most graceful type anyway, so I'm a bit worried, especially about driving my car.
But we've been told we have to be at work tomorrow or we don't get paid - already had a snow day today (teacher), but not likely for tomorrow.
The snow is very deep here though and the pavements are icey.

The way I look at it - I wouldn't risk driving round today with a newborn in the car or carrying one in my arms, so why risk it with one in my belly....

SmacOnTheLipsUnderTheMistletoe · 06/01/2010 14:06

waves to TLC
I hate the snow and ice and am useless even when not pregnant. I hate anything slippy and iceskating or skiing is my idea of hell.
I refused to leave the house yesterday. We did venture out today but only cos DH is off during the day and working a night shift later. We took the dog out together and DH drove (I don't like driving in snow either) he skidded all over the carpark and then really struggled to get up our slippy cul de sac afterwards.
Some people are confident in slippy conditions and others are not, I don't think there is anything 'pathetic' about it at all.
I am 32w + 5 and would really struggle to cope with a broken limb right now plus a dog to walk and a toddler so I'm not taking any unneccessary risks.

StayingDavidTennantsGirl · 06/01/2010 14:14

It's not pathetic at all - I'm virtually housebound at the moment because our pavements are sheets of ice, thinly covered with snow - and I'm not even pregnant!

katgod · 06/01/2010 14:16

Have been out to do school run, and also taken DD to playgroup. taking it s lowly, omly on the flat wearing full ski mon boot type things. Will be out later to pick up from school - not much choice on these trips for me really, but did decide the non essential trip to Ikea was binned for the time being. I did alos decide not to ice skate when at Lapland UK, as DD alreday had her arm in a cast... Am about 26 weeks i think (midwife cancelled this morning's appointment as she had just delivered twins and was exhausted - feel sorry for mums transferring to hospital in the snow>)

rattigan · 06/01/2010 15:05

Im 26 weeks, yesterday i went for a wander in the park and walked over a cute little bridge and ended up slipping on an ice mound and falling on my bum! So.. i dont think it is pathetic to avoid going out in the snow haha! But i did fall over a couple of months ago right on my tummy and had to go to hospital for an injection so i think i am just a very clumsy person haha! I am now beginning to worry about having to walk into town to do some shopping but ill get bored if i have to sit around again all day!

MarineIguana · 06/01/2010 15:15

I'm 29 weeks with very big bump and I am concerned about slipping. I've already slithered around a bit and nearly fallen, and DP who is fit and healthy has fallen over really badly, down some steps He's OK but if I'd had the same fall as him it could have been very serious.

I can't stay in all the time though - have to do nursery run and errands and get out and about with 4yo. I've sent off for some grippy things to attach to my boots these

ChairmumMiaow · 06/01/2010 15:21

I am 17 weeks and went out yesterday as DH and others were going sledging and I didn't want to miss seeing DS's first proper snow experience.

However I fell over twice and was a bit worried about it but definitely felt like I was considered a party pooper for being in a bad mood about it. When I got a bit of tummy ache added to the explainable backache I just wanted to go home.

So no, if you are worried don't bother if you an avoid it.

I'm hoping I'll be able to use the puschair tomorrow as that gives me balance!

Aok · 07/01/2010 09:19

I'm 30 weeks and having the same issues... I am a teacher and I keep getting shouted at for going in when it is icy by one bunch of seasoned mum's and shouted at by managers when I don't go in on icy days What's a girl to do?

ASAPWW · 07/01/2010 09:54

NO! Not pathetic at all. After seeing all those people with broken bones on tv etc. I am glad I can work from home and I dont care what anyone says about it. The council doesnt grit the pavements so I am not risking a fall. Stay in and keep warm. Let's hope it's thawed soon. xxx

BedtimeBear · 07/01/2010 10:06

I'm 27 weeks and generally not a fally-over type, but I can't decide whether it's safer to walk DS to nursery and then walk to work, or drive (we only live about 10 mins walk from both) or to just pull a 'I'm too scared to come out' and not go to work... Keep thinking that's a bit pathetic as people who live 30+ miles away have managed to get in. Fingers crossed for no more snow tonight

nickytwotimes · 07/01/2010 10:08

I am scared of falling too.

I am 18 wks, but have bad pelvic girdle pain as it is. If I fall, I will be totally buggered! I am sure the baby would be fine, but I don't want to be even more incapacitated.

MrsBadger · 07/01/2010 10:12

I would much rather walk than drive in this weather and there is no way I am staying inside with a 2yo all day (am 37+1)
