Is it pathetic to avoid going out in the snow for fear of falls?

Hi,
Am 25 weeks and off work at the mo due to a few complications.

Just wondering what other pg ladies are doing about going out and about in the snow? I don't have to go anywhere but I usually take DS to playgroup. It is a 15 min walk through my village and my DH is already calling me from work worrying about me potentially falling in the snow.

I am a bit worried but was intending on going. Am I being irresponsible or is my DH overreacting? We have about 10 - 15 cm of snow and it is still coming down.

I'm 21+3 and sooo bored of staying inside. But I live in a cul-de-sac with absolutely no grit and whilst the walk to the main road is no more than 100metres, it looks like the perfect practice rink for Dancing On Ice out there! So I'm staying put!

I've stopped driving, I'm more worried about that than walking tbh. I walked to do nursery pick-up the other day and another mum offered me and DS a lift home. Lovely of her but, erm, no! - if I'm not happy to drive around myself, I don't want to go sliding around in someone else's car with DS not in a proper child seat.

I am just over 15 weeks pregnant. I took my nearly 3 year old and 21 month old out yesterday on their sledges. They loved it and I loved it. I had no worries but then again I did pop into the loft and get my snowboarding trousers and boots down so I did have padding and grip. It's a good job that the nearest proper slope is to much of a hike with two under 3's in tow, otherwise I would have been very tempted to get my snowboard out and have a go too!
Walked into work this morning and it was fine, finding it easier in the snow than earlier in the week when it was just ice.

MarineIguana · 07/01/2010 10:39

I'm so to be missing out on the sledging but at almost 7 months I decided against. I had visions of myself going over a bump or crashing into a fence, waters breaking and having to explain to the hospital doctors what I was doing

MrsBadger · 07/01/2010 10:40

I must admit I did decline when dh offered me a go snowboarding our sledge down the hill...

and yy proper clothes - I am so huge now that none of my ski things fit so I am making do in dh's waterproofs but they are nowhere near as good.

I was fine yesterday in the snow (but I was sore when I got home from the constantly working to stay upright).

Today though it is like glass, just sheets of ice. We were already almost run down by a sliding bus, so decided to come back into the house and let the world go hang.

DS can miss a couple of days of school in order to keep DS2 safe and sound. My knees are shot from previous sporting/skiing injuries and my centre of gravity is way off.

So I don't think you are pathetic at all and if you are then so am I.

Even worse here this morning. Streets are thick with ice. Off into the garden to build a snowman for DS but am not going to chance the pavements, have already seen my postie fall on his arse this morning!!

I don't find the snow too bad but the pavements are lethal and looks like we have more snow on the way.

I really don't like staying in but I don't have to go out so an staying put.

DH is at work, we both police officers, and he says the roads are hell, he has been to accident after accident all day today and yesterday.

absolutely not. i havent been to work since yesterday. the last thing i need at the moment is a sprained muscle or worse!

we went to the starbucks where we can drive to, and the little walk i had to do to the shop i was slower than my 2 years old

pecanpie · 07/01/2010 13:40

32 weeks and didn't go out all day yesterday and haven't been out yet today. Am bored and have DD with me today so think I'm going to have to risk it. Have to walk up a big hill to get anywhere so a bit worried but can't keep DD cooped up indoors...

CreditCrunchie · 07/01/2010 19:15

I think you're being v sensible...

I was feeling 'guilty' yesterday for lolling around the house (36+5) and decided to wander out to do some recycling and post some letters...and very nearly cracked my ass after skidding 2 or 3 feet (just about managed to stay upright...) It's just not worth it is it??

Jayfer · 07/01/2010 19:44

My DH is leaving me 6 months preg to go snowboarding in France with some mates. I've decided not to stay at home on my own but I'm off to stay with my parents. Especially looking at the weather forecast for the weekend! I've only been out the house in the last few days to build a snowman in the garden. Tomorrow I'm driving DH to the station - eek!

HelenFF · 08/01/2010 17:30

I'm 16 weeks pregnant and have been walking into work. It's mostly fine except for when we have to walk downhill. The (small) hill in question gets little traffic and the snow soon ends up as ice. Slipped today but didn't fall as I held on to a rail, but it knocked my confidence. And then an elderly gentleman behind us fell right over. I wouldn't go out if I didn't have to.

catastrojb · 08/01/2010 17:36

not at all pathetic - it's not quite the same, but i fell with dd (9 months) wrapped on my back. thankfully from various sports i can twist well as i fall (weird notion i know) and she slept through it, but i was a bit shaken. definitely a concern when pg, although i'm not sure it would stop me - rather, it'd make me check my footwear and perhaps use a pointy walking stick or something.

upafrozenhill · 08/01/2010 17:37

No it's not pathetic at all. You have to do what is right for you.

I'm not pg but I wouldn't hesitate not doing anything if I didn't feel safe. I haven't driven anywhere for weeks and it's putting best part of 2 hours on my working day at mo but I don't feel safe to drive as the side sheets are just ice at the mo. I don't feel pathetic (just tired!!!)

EvilHRLady · 08/01/2010 17:40

I went out yesterday, but only because a friend picked me up and escorted me to and from the car. I am 38+6, and having avoided any other illness or injury (touch wood) for the past 9 months, I have no desire to land myself with a broken wrist - or worse - at this point.

So I am inside - until I have to go to hospital!
