Does an induction always finish by a cs?

Hi,

I'm due to be induced at 38 weeks for health reasons and after reading many posts, I'm starting to worry (actually be scared) that inductions always end up by CS.

Is there anybody who had an induction followed by a successful VBAC?

Many thanks for your stories

I've been induced with all 3 of my children, never had a CS.

Not sure i know what you mean by induction followed by sucessful VBAC - have you previously had a c-section? Or do you mean a successful vaginal birth?

coppertop · 30/12/2009 14:13

Same as Flower.

I've had 3 inductions and no CS.

I had a totally normal birth following an induction. Remember an induction is just a dose of hormones, replicating those your body would make. I would chose to have an induction again.

Piffpaffpoff · 30/12/2009 14:15

I was induced twice at full term due to Gestational Diabetes - DC1 took 14hrs to arrive, DC2 a mere 3. Both 'normal' deliveries and no mention of a CS at any point.

I know a few people who had perfectly straightforward VBs and were induced.

One friend was induced by the gel at 36.6 and her labour was a few hours, just gas and air and the pushing stage consisted of two pushes!

That's great to hear that, thank you all for your answers they are reassuring!!!

Two inductions here, quick vaginal births with no stitches at all! People tend to talk about when it goes 'wrong' more than when it goes to plan, so hopefully those of us with positive experiences can help to ease your mind by redressing the balance somewhat - lots of good luck!

mamakoukla · 30/12/2009 14:18

No, not all go on to have a CS.

Don't worry... your precious bundle will be here soon.

I had an induction at 38 weeks for health reasons too and was fine - in fact I only needed one batch of the gel to set me off. The medical team did warn me though that induction at 38 weeks has a higher chance of being unsuccessful (and leading to cs) than induction at say 40 or 41 weeks, as many women are nowhere near ready to go into labour naturally. However since I'd gone into labour with my first child at 39 weeks, I wasn't that worried...Best of luck!

SleighGirl · 30/12/2009 14:21

I've had 4 inductions, with 2 they broke my waters to move things along after the pessaries not doing a huge amount on their own over 36 hours. Other 2 only needed 1 and 2 pessaries. Didn't need the drip or anything.

Delivered without assistance only one stitch ever but then she was 10lb 6oz.

CarrotForKing · 30/12/2009 14:26

I was induced and did end up having a section. My waters broke at 37 weeks though so a bit earlier than you. Don't be scared though, having a cs was fine (I've had another since) - my dd was born safely and I recovered without any problems. Good luck

JollyPirate · 30/12/2009 14:27

Well it did in my case but as an ex-midwife I can tell you that more end in normal deliveries if that's any comfort (whatever normal is).

roary · 30/12/2009 14:28

I was induced and had a perfectly natural delivery, but it was my first birth and not a VBAC.

The C-section rate is higher for inductions but this partly because of the fact that women are often induced because there is a problem with the pregnancy and therefore they have to get the baby out faster.

roary · 30/12/2009 14:29

(I mean to say, it's not the induction that's necessarily causing the c-section, but the reasons for being induced in the first place)

juuule · 30/12/2009 14:29

I've had 2 inductions (pessaries and gel) and no CS.

I was determined not to be induced, despite having high BP in later pregnancy. In the end, I "gave in", and all was fine. No CS, and really "quick" VB.

(in fact, just anecdotal, but 2 friends had babies the same day as me. One was induced and also had VB. The other wasn't, but it ended in a CS.)

Good luck

picc · 30/12/2009 14:47

oops! obviously not meaning you to draw any conclusion from anecdote! Just to illustrate that induction doesn't always mean CS. Sorry!

watercress · 30/12/2009 14:50

I was induced and DD was delivered by ventouse, mainly because my epidural (much needed and not regretted at all!) killed my contractions and nothing - not even the highest possible dose of syntocin drip - could bring them back in any substantial way.

Good luck x

Allthe8s · 30/12/2009 15:00

I was induced - pessary at midnight, waters broken at 6am and gave birth at 12 noon.

Good luck not long to go! x

popcal · 30/12/2009 15:06

I have been induced 3 times no cs.1st one pessary, arm and drip(40+5), 2nd Arm only(41+2) and 3rd 3 pessaries and ARM (very quick delivery after that)40w. Am hoping to be induced again with 4th as currently 37w and don't want to go too overdue with 3 others to look after.

HappyBump · 30/12/2009 15:09

I was induced, no c-section.

MrsJohnDeere · 30/12/2009 15:16

2 inductions, no cs here.

drinkystinkyuletidegubbins · 30/12/2009 15:17

I was induced with DS1 at 42 weeks - no csec but he was overdue and the induction took very quickly. The issue with being induced early is your body - and baby - may not be ready to come out so it may take quite some time for your body to go into active labour - and by the time it does you might be rather too tired/baby getting distressed which could result in a c-section. There is no guarantee which way it will go - go in with an open mind, try and keep as active as you can in the early stages of the induction to help it take and good luck.
