Were can I find a good warm coat for this winter? I'm 24 weeks pregnant and the one I'm using at the moment is not warm enough, specially since I'm going away to Germany in a weeks' time.

I have just ordered the black military style coat from Mothercare. Unfortunately I haven't got a clue how to do links.

I have found it impossible to buy a maternity coat this year as the majority of the shops just don't have a selection of sizes so you have to end up buying online. H&M have a nice one but they didn't have my size. New Look also had one I liked but it didn't fit me properly.

EldonAve · 03/12/2009 18:53

H&M?

TortillaDeMaiz · 03/12/2009 18:56

Yes, its awful. last time I managed with a few oversized coats that I already had, because I was due in Nov. But now I need something to keep me warm throughout the winter when the bump is at its biggest.

I'm a bit reluctant to buy online, but I guess I have no other choice, given that the shops in my town don't offer much maternity range.

I got one from Next.

Trying4Baby1 · 03/12/2009 19:44

I've just ordered this one from jojomamanbebe
jacket
It looks really good because you can wear it after pregnancy by removing the panel. I thought it might be handy after I've had the baby too, as on a bad day I could have baby in sling with jacket on using panel. I have a dog who needs walked regardless of weather otherwise she's hyper so thought I'd get the most use out of this. I like the fact that it has a hood too.

Plus you can get 10% off with the discount code from mumsnet!

this one looked really nice, and there's a non maternity version too, that looked as if it will work with a bump.

Lastyearsmodel · 03/12/2009 19:51

I noticed Red Herring in Debenhams had maternity coats.

TortillaDeMaiz · 03/12/2009 19:57

oranges - I liked the one you recommend. is it warm enough? I will be facing around 0 C temperatures with snow and everything for most of the winter

I think it should be warm enough - hard to tell really, but its wool and lined.

TortillaDeMaiz · 03/12/2009 20:03

that sounds good enough! I should buy it.

I found a fabulous coat: it's very warm and quite smart-looking. It was only £25 from Tesco! Not actually a maternity coat, but it's lovely and loose round the front (am 32 wks and have room to grow). I bought it in the next size up from my usual size.

I've got in in grey, but they had a fabulous hot pink one, too.

roary · 04/12/2009 11:01

Don't get a maternity coat! Get a regular coat in a swing or a-line style. You can then wear it after pregnancy too. I did this last time with one from Zara, which fell apart. This pregnancy I have splurged a bit and gotten one from French COnnection, which is much better quality and should be great post-pregnancy too.

I do think it's very important if you go this route to try it on and shove something up the front to make sure you have room to expand. But a-line coats are great and then you don't waste money on a maternity one.

I got this one but the Lark and Song would both work too. Lots at cheaper price points about at the moment - THink M&S have some good ones right now too.

Purplebuns · 04/12/2009 11:22

I second the non maternity swing coat, I did it.
The only problem was that by the time I had the baby I couldn't wear the coat, because I hated it! lol

Too many 'whale' memories

blondiep14 · 04/12/2009 11:25

Ditto purplebuns!
I got the fleece lined parka one from Jojo, pretty warm, in fact have yet to do it up! I did get a size 14 rather than 12 as wasn't sure of the sizes but was glad I did.

Purplebuns · 04/12/2009 11:28

Definitely size up!

superbean · 04/12/2009 17:00

I bought the isabella oliver swing coat for work and evening, and then a topshop maternity one for everything else. Couldn't get on with the jojomamanbebe parker but they did have a green wool one that also looked nice

Karrierbag · 04/12/2009 18:38

I bought a coat from primark! Plenty of room for bump, warm and cheap too - about £22 I think!! It's black with buttons down the front, it has popper fastening and it's a tulip-style coat so like I said, plenty of room for growing bump! I LOVE IT!! New look also had a nice black maternity coat too, think they had it in blue as well!

xx

MrsMattie · 04/12/2009 18:57

Ever since I've been on MN this question has come up, and there is never, ever a satisfactory answer! I have been through two winter pregnancies looking like a hippo. There is definitely a gap in the market for this!

AmazingBouncingFerret · 04/12/2009 19:10

I have the navy blue military style maternity coat from Red Herring at Debenhams, it has been excellent and I shall miss wearing it after ive had the baby.
Im now eyeing up a similar non maternity one in River Island!!

crumpette · 04/12/2009 20:12

Last weekend I dragged my gigantuous self out shopping and went to baby gap with a maternity section.
I found the loveliest longish black smart wool coat, maternity, in Gap. It was FAB. They size it in xs,s,m,l I think (maybe xl). s fitted really well despite the bump and covered the tummy. I think it was 75GBP sadly I was having a rational day and decided that at nearly 36wks pregnant I couldnt justify it as wouldnt be wearing it for very long...

But yes, Gap. Fab.

pigleychez · 04/12/2009 20:57

Another vote for the Tesco swing coat too. I just got a bigger size.

MyNameIsInigoMontoya · 04/12/2009 22:48

I think I would be too big to fit into a non-maternity coat this time, even a swing style. I was already too big for the extra-large-size Primark one I bought last time round to get me through the last few weeks (last time I was due earlier, so only had a few weeks of really cold weather).

This time I am not due till Feb and kept being freezing, so I have got a black one from Mothercare (with bright pink lining) and really like it actually!

MarieKL · 04/12/2009 23:12

I'm with roary and Purplebuns* Brought a lovely non-maternity coat from Monsoon. Due in Feb and still have plenty of room to grow because of the style. Got the next size up but should be fine for next year too!

Guess the best coat for you depends on your size and bump.

Hope you have a lovely time in Germany, and find a suitable one
