Knitting during pregnancy

Hi everyone,

I'm knitting for my baby while pregnant.
I'm not a big expert or anything I just find it nice to make her something myself and find it relaxing too.

I was wondering if anyone else is knitting for their baby and if anyone wants to get together to knit and chat, swap tips/patterns?

I am 31, 27 weeks pregnant with my first baby and live in NW london.

Hi,

Since starting maternity leave I have taught myself to crochet and I'm loving it!

I've made a blanket and a cardigan so far and I find it really relaxing (and I'm so proud to have made something myself). I think I'd like to learn to knit if I have time once my baby is born :-)

piggybank · 25/11/2009 09:13

BTW, I would have loved to get together but I'm no where near London ;-(

FJMi · 25/11/2009 09:20

I've made a blanket and a sweater too
Although I'm still struggling to get the sizes right. I made the sweater for a 3-6month baby and its huge!

Me too! Only mine ends up too small. So Now I have a cardi for baby AND one that will fit a teddy bear!

I'm not sure why my gauge didn't fit the pattern I must have the wrong tension.

I'm trying to make this now and again the gauge doesn't fit but DH and I both have small hands, so that's ok.

I have found some cute patterns here including resources for knitting.

woowa · 25/11/2009 11:28

I've just started my 8th cardigan i think and have 2 blankets on the go! Wish I lived in london still to meet, but am miles away. Do a search on google for "knitting groups in london" or "stitch and bitch london" (horrible name but nice groups!!)

THere are LOADS of knitting groups about, just got to find one.

ooh - and I just finished a maternity jumper for me which is great for covering bump. From "natural knits for mums and babies" by Erika Knight. Book.

FJMi · 25/11/2009 11:38

Oh thanks for that!

I think the bath mitt is so cute

I like a couple of the cardigans from the other page. May give them a go

Once I get pregnant again, I will be joining you guys. Just before my MC, I said that I wanted to start knitting for my baby. Lovely thread. x

purlcity · 25/11/2009 16:15

I'm in Manchester and am 27+3.

I would love to knit some things for my little one BUT I seem to have a never ending list of knitting to do for other people!

I have to finish a scarf for my husband, a pair of socks for my niece, a shawl for my gran and a cowl for my sister and then I will be able to start knitting for the baby.

I have recently learnt to spin so I am also hoping to spin some really soft yarn up and use it to make my little one some cardis and a blanket.

sh77 · 25/11/2009 17:11

Purl - do you know of any good knitting groups in/around Manchester?

purlcity · 25/11/2009 18:22

There are a few good knitting groups around Manchester.

I go to the Kings Arms in Salford (Mondays 7-9pm) which is only about 10 mins walk from Deansgate Manchester.

There are a few in the city centre.... best thing to do is join Ravelry.com (a top website for knitters and crocheters) and when you have joined look at the forum group 'Madchester Massive' there's loads of info on their about the various city centre groups and ones further a field.

You should join www.ravelry.com - a social networking site for knitters with millions of patterns, forums etc etc

What a great thread. I'm a bit of a artycrafty person (I love embroidery, for eg)but have only started knitting this summer thanks to my 13 year old daughter who was taught by my mum during the holidays. I'm so basic though: I am currently doing a blanket for my baby due end of January.

My question is how did you learn to make all this jumpers, socks, etc? Are you self-taught? I'd really like some tips as I would love to progress from basic rectangles to, say, a simple baby cardigan over the next few months.

Please give me some advice.

thumbwitch · 26/11/2009 17:11

tis great fun isn't it - I knitted a blanket for DS but made up the measurements - sadly it got a bit out of hand and ended up being about 7ft long! but it's lovely - all in rainbow stripes and we use it to snuggle up under now he is older (almost 2).

Rachiesparrow · 26/11/2009 17:11

I'm knitting too! I taught myself from youtube. Isn't the net a wonderful thing?

Found the cutest cardigan, by the way, on www.knitty.com. Managed not to mangle it too hideously also.

Thandeka · 26/11/2009 17:13

awesome. I am North london and knitting baby hats cept I am rubbish at following patterns so keep meaning to go to a class in my local libary!

I am 28 and 30weeks pregnant.

FJMi · 26/11/2009 17:41

Thandeka, Well I am getting better at following patterns so I am happy to help if I can you should find a pattern of something you'd like to knit and we'll arrange a meeting. I am due to start a little all in one

jardins: I learnt from my mum, but it was basic to begin with. Then we both started trying patterns. We bugged the ladies at John Lewis whenever we got stuck with something we didn't know. And it builds little by little. But now with youtube its really easy to look up things in a pattern you dont get.

FJMi- Awesome- its a pattern of a hat called an umbilical cord hat but its knitting in the round but then knitting off that and onto straight needles where i get lost!

Waves at Jardins- hurrah for being on same thread again- forgot you were a few weeks ahead- its getting scarily close now innit!

MamaLazarou · 26/11/2009 19:49

Oooh, I love knitting. Am 32 wks with DC1. I am a very keen but not very good knitter. So far I have made a blanket from squares, a jumper and a hat. I also made a jumper for myself but it's about 4 sizes too big so I'll have to give it to my mum for xmas.

I can recommend 'Baby Knits For Beginners' by Debbie Bliss - it's got loads of really easy patterns.

MrsBadger · 26/11/2009 20:05

I was on the same train of thought as Londonlottie

Thanks for your answer FJMi! There's a great little knitting shop in my home town where the owner does knitting classes at a big oak table with coffee and cakes. Also people pop into her shop just for advice. I think I should swallow my beginner's pride and go and seek a few tips from her.

Thread hijack; sorry!!!

Youpee! Hi Thandeka! Great to see you! How are you doing? Are those initial scarey months a distant memory for you or not? I'm 32 weeks starting tomorrow and am generally pleased to be edging closer to the end. How's your pregnancy going? Are you still at work? Oh, and here's an original question; 'have you had the jab or not?' I have decided to have it as from today. Things in France are hotting up and the virus is getting too close for comfort.

Let me know your news when you have a mo. I miss our original thread sometimes, you know.

Yorky · 26/11/2009 20:27

I knitted quite a lot when I was pg with DS, now nearly 3, hardly did any for DD but thinking of starting again for this one -IF I can stay awake in evenings!

My gran taught me years ago but before DS I hadn't knitted since Guides! Fortunately my mum is good but I think she was getting tired of phonecalls asking what I'd done wrong this time!

littleomar · 26/11/2009 20:48

hello. i've made a cardigan for mine so far and i was going to start a hat on the train today but found myself without one of my dpns.

i am self taught, but owe a great deal to the lady at john lewis in kingston, as well as ravelry

other good resources are youtube (check out the knitwitch) and yarnharlot's blog (www.yarnharlot.ca) which has got some really good tips as well as being a very sympathetic blog.

MrsBadger · 26/11/2009 22:09

aha now I remember

the other good (and easy) book is Baby Bloom by Erika Knight - see if your library has it
