Ok had decided I would go ahead and have the Swine Flu jab once my surgery got in touch, then while led in bed this morning on comes Hilary Jones saying if his wife was pregnant he would advise her not to have it! Only 2 weeks ago or so he was saying all pregnant woman should have it!!

So now what do I do? and yes I am the sort of person who prefers information in plain english so I can understand, im not a medical type of person with no medical background. All I care about is will my baby be OK if I had the jab. Im 30 weeks right now.

I know we are all in similar positions as each other not really knowing what to do but after this conflicting advise im totally confused!

Sorry I prob sound really thick now

GhoulsAreLoud, I've heard this as well and so searched BBC news: news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/health/3527178.stm

I thought it was a easy decision if one is in early pregnancy not to have the jab but perhaps it isn't. I'm in the third trimester so at high risk of complications.

I was against the jab but after seeing my GP who gave me this www.dh.gov.uk/prod_consum_dh/groups/dh_digitalassets/documents/digitalasset/dh_107825.pdf I changed my mind.

Dr Hilary Jones caused a brief wobble but I've decided to go ahead, unless anything else changes my mind before Saturday.

GhoulsAreLoud · 18/11/2009 12:20

I'm swayed towards having it too milky.

I'm only 7.5 weeks atm and haven't even been called for it yet. I'll be 12 weeks xmas week, going away for xmas. Thinking of seeing if I can have it when I come back after xmas and at least will be out of the third trimester.

I don't know if we have any say at all over when we have it though.

MilkyChopsKid · 18/11/2009 12:27

Ghouls, your link was much more scientific . There is another thread on MN with somebody who says they have been offered the other jab, if you are willing to wait you could have that www.mumsnet.com/Talk/swine_flu/862857-Can-have-Pandremix-now-or-Celvapan-in-January-WWYD.

There is some report on the radio that half of pregnant women are refusing the vaccine so perhaps the government will try and make the Celvapan available more quickly if they can.

GhoulsAreLoud · 18/11/2009 12:32

Oh that sounds really interesting, thanks so much for the link milky.

I think that's what I'm going to do - wait til Jan and get celvapan if I can.

The risks of SF are not as high in the first trimester as far as I can tell. Will just have to take lots of hand gel with me wherever I go!

TakeLovingChances · 18/11/2009 12:42

Hi, I didn't see gmtv with him saying this on it, but it is interesting.

I don't think it's irresponsible for medical people to have different opinions; all people in any walk of life have differences of opinions. But I agree that it's hard for us normal people to know what's best when TV doctors seem to be telling different info at different times!

I like things in plain English too, but it is so hard to find 100% accurate information, because I don't think anyone has it!!!

My husband is a GP and didn't try to convince me to have the SF jab. He said it was my choice after reading info on it and watching what the news said. He does advise his patients to make up their own minds, but he knew I'd be too stubborn to listen to him try to coax me into having it! In the end I didn't have it, and just plan to take my chances and try to avoid the SF (I'm 25 weeks pregnant).

I'm not sure if I'm right, but it seems to me that England is a lot more keen for people to have the jab than where I live in N. Ireland.

All pregnant women here got letters inviting them for the jab, but when I speak to my midwife and tell her I turned it down she (and other health professionals) agree that it's my individual choice

Hard to know what to do.

Countering Hilary Jones personal message

I am 21/40, a GP and have just had SF vaccine
(I thought a lot about it)

preggersplayspop · 18/11/2009 12:57

Urgghh, he's on Loose Women now. They are really fawning over him.

He's flogging his book.

mrsrvc · 18/11/2009 13:19

I didn't see Hillary Jones this am but I thought I would just let you know what my consultant said to me this morning.
My son died a week after birth earlier this year so understandably this pregnancy is particularly precious and I am being cautious about EVERYTHING. I went to my gp to ask about SF and she said that they would want me to check with my consultant which rather scared me a bit as I presumed that they would definitely say to have it.

Anyway Consultant called this morning and totally reassured me. She would advise me to have it as soon as possible ( I am now 14w) as the risks of catching it far outweigh any possible risks of the vaccine. If I were living in the middle of nowhere and could avoid interaction with anyone for the next 6 months then fine, but I live in central london, have a husband who commutes on the underground/ bus system daily and so have a high chance of catching it. Also, having back to back pregnancies is making me feel quite run down, so the risk associated with the virus are much scarier.

I TOTALLY trust my consultant, and am sure that if she (who is head of obstetrics at a big london hospital) knew of any possible risk to baby she would have been honest about it.

maybebaby23 · 18/11/2009 13:35

mrsvc thanks for sharing that and im so sorry to hear about your baby (hugs)

Rubyshoos · 18/11/2009 13:39

I've read all your posts with great interest as I'm 16 weeks pregnant and booked in to have my vaccination tomorrow. I've had many a sleepless night over whether or not to have it, but after consulting with my Obstetrician Mr Teoh at St Marys (considered by many to be at the top of his game when it comes to fetal and maternal medicine) he has urged me to have it and it and I totally trust him so I'm going to go ahead and have it and not lose any more sleep over it.

jaype · 18/11/2009 13:47

I didn't think the lovely Dr Jones had a wife - hasn't she just divorced him for shagging some woman from a makeover show (plus others)? I'm surprised he has any time to keep up with medical stuff, given his extra-curricular activities...

mama2moo · 18/11/2009 13:55

Oh yeah, I think you are right jaype. I read that somewhere aswell.

mrsvc - So sorry for your loss . Good to hear the your consultant has advised you to have it. Makes me feel better.

mama2moo · 18/11/2009 13:56

Not married anymore, the liar!

iateallthecreameggsyummy · 18/11/2009 14:13

Mrsvc im sorry for your loss and im pleased you can trust your consultant!

I called my surgery who said the letters have yet to be sent out so I will make an appt, if it takes too long then thats good as it gives me time to discuss the jab with my midwife.

thanks ladies!

Tryingtobeorganisedthisyear · 18/11/2009 14:49

I'm still completely confused too. I have my 20 weeks scan next week then due to have the jab.

I read this today on the BBC website, an interview with a topdog at Glaxo:

"Pandemrix has not been formally studied in pregnant women as part of a clinical trial program.

We know that thousands of pregnant women have already been vaccinated with Pandemrix as part of the government-led immunisation programmes. GSK is actively working with governments to follow these women long term.()

From a theoretical point of view, we have studied our adjuvants carefully and don't believe there is a risk - but we don't have clinical data specifically in pregnant women.

... we are not promoting the vaccine for any particular group. We give the data and leave it up to regulators. France has decided to give unadjuvanted vaccines to pregnant women. In Canada, the government has decided to use our vaccine for pregnant women, as has the UK.

Each mother and each doctor has to weigh up the known risks of getting H1N1 and the theoretical risk of having the vaccine and make a personal decision. It's worth pointing out that pregnant women have been immunised with seasonal flu vaccines for years."

Doesn't fill me with confidence, whereas before i was leaning towards having it....

iateallthecreameggsyummy · 18/11/2009 14:51

maybebaby putting things into perspective for myself im thinking of the times i got pregnant and my bfp, how i googled it and ended up worrying about evap lines..... or the times when any pain and cramps at the beginning led me to worry about ectopic pregnancies, then the not feeling baby moving worrying soething had happened and so on and so on. Yes my baby has been perfectly fine so far and continues to kick me as if hes the upcoming Beckham! (yet years ago before the web woman got their bfps and that was it they were expecting)

You know what this has made me realise googling and reearching for me is pointless! It makes me worry, Im gonna listen to my midwife now sod the scare mongering im going to put my trust in them, the most negativ e thing I heard so far is people having an arm ache the next day!

so sod it IM GONNA GET IT DONE!!

OP posts:
lumpasmelly · 18/11/2009 14:54

Lets keep this in perspective....even if only 48 percent of pregnant women accept the jab (which is the current estimates being reported by the Telegraph today) then a small proportion of those women are going to have something go wrong with their pregnancy, as this is just a statistical fact (swine flu jab or not). We just need to remind ourselves of that, and not get freaked out by it, difficult as it may sound.....it's easy for those that are anti vaccine and anti the jabb to point the finger.

For all those who have made the decision to have the jab, or who have already have it, try and relax and enjoy the rest of your pregnancy as you have based your decision upon the best facts that have been available to you....don't let Hilary wanker Jones make you feel bad!

Personally, i can't wait to have my jab on the 28th - my consultant (who is head of obstetrics at a large london hospital) is totally behind it and I trust her more than I trust hilary....

iateallthecreameggsyummy · 18/11/2009 14:59

agree with what you have said Lumpa but there are woman on here just like me that dont have access to a consultant for the advice.

No one has spoken to me or given me advice about the jab other than my own research on here. I only see my midwife every so often when im booked in and even then its quite rushed due to her having lots of woman booked in. This means there are woman like me who listen to as you and lots of people call him Hilary Wanker Jones (lmao) and we believe him sad I know.

I only wish I had a consultant to give me some advice

OP posts:
mrsrvc · 18/11/2009 15:13

Don't wish you had a consultant. You only usually get one if there is something unusual about your pregnancy or history.
Enjoy being looked after by a boring old midwife!!

iateallthecreameggsyummy · 18/11/2009 15:14

oh okey dokey! my boring old midwife is good enough

OP posts:
maybebaby23 · 18/11/2009 17:35

iateallthecremeggsyummy-i agree with you, you have decided to go ahead with it, good for you!! I AM GOING TO GET IT DONE TOO!! Sod it, it is far far too painful to spend every waking hour worrying about it. Im not reading any more threads on swine flu from now on. (Although if there is something serious someone alert me! lol!)

I did all the googling at the start of each pregnancy, the worrying about ectopic, miscarriage etc etc and like you, i don't do very well with researching things...best to speak to someone isn't it. My midwife advised me to get in and has had it herself. I shall accept the offer whenever it finally arrives!

Tigresswoods · 18/11/2009 17:48

I saw the Dr Hilary thing and have taken the decision to still have it as my Dr's have advised it. Also I am 25 weeks so figure the baby is formed (mostly) and just laying down fats so am going for it.

Think I would regret not having it if I got 2 weeks of swine flu hell!

MillyMollyMoo · 18/11/2009 17:51

Just one other point for all those who think they are having it, I was at the GP's today and pregnant women aren't the number one priority and ours hasn't even recieved a batch yet so it's a complete non issue for now, they may run out before your even offered it.
